Nice shot! We tried this one couple summers ago with cheap cast steel anvils and even they were able to took the launch. I think we had too soft ground or something since I think our throws weren't this high. We also broke the rules and test with really fast flash powders :D The anvils didn't explode but they didn't fly any higher either. And about being professional on anvil shooting, if you have ads on this video and get paid with any google money you are professional by definition since you are getting paid to do this :D

Grady, It would be interesting to know the force required to make 150lb weight go up to 200’ in 7 seconds...that initial acceleration rate is impressive given the lack of a closed bore as in a cannon.

I think the true test of a respectable "anvileer" should be a point system based on how high they can shoot it but also how close they can get it to landing back down on the base anvil. That would be a fun annual competition that would take some thought and engineering!

@@bpccmath251calculusiihitch4 I'm sure they launch anvils in 'bama too! They should definitely do it but I suspect you'll only get around 3-5 frames of chaos and the anvil departing the frame, even at the limits of those phantoms at a reasonable resolution.

And old welder buddy of mine made a acetylene cannon out of an old cutting rig and a piece of six inch stainless he liberated off a job site. We buried it in the ground and used a piezoelectric igniter with about twenty foot line. Man that thing made some noise. You felt it as much as heard it. Perfectly safe as long as you didn’t put anything in it. He passed a few years ago and we sure miss him. Happy 4th. No better way to celebrate than blowing things up!

So this is why you occasionally hear of anvils being found in fields. I had always wondered. 50 years I've been alive in America, and never ever have I heard of such a thing. Thx for the enlightenment. I got to be honest, I was more worried for the camera than I was for you for the participants. It seemed awfully close.

I fondly remember, as a youngster, spending the summers at my dad's home in the country, and his idea of fireworks was us building a good and proper fire with liter knot, kindling and seasoned oak that we split from trees we felled ourselves, fashioning our own skewers from palmeto for the hotdogs and marshmallows, we played horse shoes, ate watermelon that we grew, and when it was dark we'd all take turns between cracking cow whips and shooting his .50cal muzzle loader into the air with only powder, a wad, and cap. My dad was awsome like that, and I was lucky to grow up hunting, fishing, farming, ranching, experiencing countless other cool country boy fun, and, of course, hard self sufficient country boy work.

@DinkleDigeroo There might be nitrogen in the saltpetre component of black powder though it's the sulfur and charcoal that's the energy behind the explosion. The Oxygen in the saltpetre is the oxidiser. Nitrogen is not really involved in the chemical process of the explosion other than that it gets released from the saltpetre when the oxygen is used to explode the charcoal and sulfur. Black powder is still considered a low explosive since the explosion is still subsonic and do not give of a strong shockwave like high explosives does when they pass the sound barrier.

I remember as a kid hearing the anvils being launched and the ringing that went with it for 6 miles away.
