Got stuck on the side of the road without warning, so I figured i'd make this video to just serve as a reminder for all high mileage 24V VR6 owners (R32 Included) out there to keep a mental note about your crankshaft position sensor's health. Heck, 12V peeps should mind it as well.
They can fail when cars get old, or have been exposed to a lot of heat for extended periods of time like my VR6 Turbo. When they do finally fail, it's without warning and will likely leave you stuck. If you're lucky the car will maybe broadcast some symptoms first and run rough, or possibly rob power. Either way, It's a cheap part, and worth the peace of mind if you're car's up there and it hasn't ever been changed.

I would love to have AVR6I have a 2.0 but yeah the crank shaft sensor I just put a and bell and a time and chain on it with a water pump and a new tensioner thank you for the information I shouldn't change the crank sensor By the way I love that engine

Having a hella time getting the bolt of the one side of the crankshaft sensor (turbo). I think I need a flex driver to avoid further disassembly. Any suggestions?

He never made it to Jersey. RIP. Good advice on the crank sensor though. My 2.0 AVH's crank sensor just went out enough to throw codes and I wish it had the decency to fail faster. My car had been a bit down on power and running less than perfectly for awhile (years) but I had attributed that to exhaust leaks/02 sensor codes. I finally sealed up the exhaust and was treated to my engine turning off once or twice, intermittent hard starts, and finally just before the code showed up the car would bog down right at 4,000 RPM. Did it in every gear too. So yes, while it might be a good thing that the car still runs with a failing Crank sensor it would be nice if there was some way to know it was on it's way out. For $15 it's a good idea to change it anyways and check out your car while it's in the air.

Hey buddy, Just saw your comment on your car cutting out at 4000 rpm. I'm driving a 98" obd2 vr6 and experiencing this same issue. I already experienced the crank sensor issue and it had it changed about a year ago, but recently started experiencing the car cutting out at 4000 rpm in every gear. Any advice would be appreciated Thanks in advance

@@dhirannaicker3753 Well the 2.0 and VR6 are different engines with different ECU's, but my cutouts seemed to be influenced by an exhaust leak I had (and still have). Do you have any exhaust leaks or a non standard exhaust? Any CEL codes? Obviously trying another crank sensor might help. They're cheap enough.

Quick Question, do you need to have the engine oil out first before disconnecting the sensor?

My 04 R32...shut off on me during rush hour traffic - bumper to bumper Long story short...a few hours later I limped home and it sat on the driveway for 6+ weeks. I replaced the fuel pump and the issue continued...I finally cave in and took it to European specialty shop....and yeah it was the crankshaft sensor....waiting to hear how much it'll cost Btw I've had her since 06 and I'm sitting at 230k miles.

Same thing happened with me in my 04 r32, waiting on a crank position sensor and hopefully it will do the trick. Car would start up fine when it’s cool but once it gets hot it will shut off and won’t turn on until it’s cooled

Yes but in a different car - I had to limp the car back to my parents house. Wasn't about to hit bridges/tunnels and metro traffic with the car like this. Changed it out the next week and the car was good to go.

@@danny_vrsociety you changed the crank shaft sensor and everything was good? I’m having problems with my Passat GT 3.6 VR6 and a euro shop has been throwing parts at it they thought it was just a isolated misfire in cylinder 5 but I TOLD THEM it had a crankshaft position sensor code on it when the check engine light first came on but they proceeded to have me buy all new plugs coils and injectors just to find out it’s still misfiring. I’m confident it’s the sensors and for the price I think it’s definitely worth a shot if not I guess I’m gonna have to part out or rebuild

@@MegaMatt1710 In my case yes, but I didn't have a misfire, and I'm not sure a crank sensor being bad issue would cause a misfire. I'd expect a no-start/sudden shutoff situation if anything. But hey, maybe the 3.6s are unique. A misfire on a single cylinder can usually be isolated to a part that's not common among the rest of the engine and only to that cylinder - so, coil, plug, injector, etc., on that cylinder specifically. However if you do have a crank sensor code, I would definitely attempt a replacement since it's so easy and see if the problem subsides before doing anything more drastic.
