The whole thing with Maul and Obi-Wan was this: this two have had a rivalry that spanned nearly thirty years. They had fought so many times that they more or less knew exactly how they fought, almost on the same level that Obi-Wan and Anakin knew each other. But there was a big difference when it came to Kenobi and Maul’s final battle: Kenobi had changed, Maul didn’t. Kenobi immediately recognized what Maul was going to do: he tried to do the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon, the move where he slammed his saberstaff into his chin to stun him and then stab him. So, Kenobi baits him, switching from his Soresu stance to his Ataru stance, the style he and Qui-Gon used back on Naboo, making Maul think he’ll fall for the same ploy. But again, Kenobi by now has changed, switching from the aggressive form of Ataru to the defensive form of Soresu, so when Maul goes to perform that same move, he’s ready. That’s why it ended so quickly. Kenobi had grown and evolved while Maul was still the same old instrument of rage he had always been

My thoughts exactly. When I saw the scene at first a part of me felt underwhelmed that it wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be but then I realized that with the whole point because Darth maul was so focused on getting revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi that he never really improved himself to actually beat Obi-Wan. Personally I haven't finished watching Obi-Wan Kenobi the six-parters so I haven't yet seen the Obi-Wan versus Vader battle that Doug says rebels does better between Ashoka and Vader. But anybody who knows me know that I'm not too crazy when Star Wars doesn't "play like a form of Star Wars media should" I just simply go along for the ride and experience the ups and downs of whatever they throw at me

@@hollowman7168 going a little off topic he was wrong about why the huntsman spared Snow White all the way back in the very first Disney December talking about the original Snow White and the seven dwarfs animated movie he claimed it would because of Snow White's "hotness" that he spared her but no. Remember the queen ordered the huntsman to kill Snow White he protested but she reminds him of the penalty if he fails. And while Snow White was innocently picking flowers and helping an innocent little bird the huntsman approach is ready to kill her knowing full well that if he doesn't it'll be him who will be killed. Right after Snow White hope that little bird the huntsman must have been thinking the queen wants me to kill this beautiful little girl who only help in an innocent little creature and that's why I couldn't bear to kill Snow White. Because of her kindness and innocent to others and the queen wanted to destroy a like that. Heck and a bonus feature based off of story meeting that Walt and his staff of artists back in the day they purposely explained detail by detail and the motivation of the character and one of them flat-out said if the goodness of Snow White that defeats the Huntsman wanting to obey the queen's orders. And all that is done in the original movie with little to no dialogue purely action and what the audience already knows the dilemma the huntsman have to do. Sorry for getting off topic but I shall always defend the Disney Princesses showing how even if their movie is technically outdated by modern standard the character themselves still are timeless in their characterization of kindness loyalty optimism friendship and all other virtues

I damn near loved Thrawn. Everything from his theme, to his voice actor, to his calm, measured persona. He's one of the few super genius type characters that was actually shown working things out. Other times it's taken as wrote that they figured things out, but we got to see him deduce everything piece by piece, using esoteric data he collects that no else in the empire would bat an eye at. When he said he studies the art war, I fully understood what he meant.
@swanchamp5136
@swanchamp5136 Жыл бұрын
Thrawn really was a great threat as the only things that let him down were either unforseen circumstances like The Bendu or his officers ignoring his orders in their pursuit of glory. He never underestimated his enemies, but his weakness was overestimating the abilities of his subordinates.
@skyguy675
@skyguy675 Жыл бұрын
@@swanchamp5136 what I love particularly about Thrawn is particularly his downfall. He's a tactician, he relies on quantifiable, reliable data to make his conclusions. Even his comprehension of art is from a pragmatic standpoint. His antithesis is faith, he is completely at odds with the jedi and the force in general. He even states he never had much truck with the jedi, like they're one of the few things he doesn't really understand. So people’s unwavering, religious faith in the force (bendu and Ezra controlling the space whales) is a piece of brilliance. In any other universe he would have won.

I actually REALLY love how Maul vs. Kenobi was a battle of just 3 hits. I thought it was showing how powerful Kenobi was with the force, how disciplined he was, how much he grew with the force, and obviously, it was a moment he was thinking about for DECADES. He knew he'd face Maul again and want some kind of comeuppance for the death of his girlfriend and mentor. Plus he was an old man, you can't do anything crazy because then the Vader fight in New Hope looks even less justified. That fight was slow and awkward but you bought it because of the characters, same goes with the Maul fight.

And the amazing point is that it was the very move that killed Obi-Wan's master that Obi-Wan thwarted to deliver the killing blow. In 3 moves, they showed us the crux of the maul arc... Maul never grew or evolved...using the same moves and tactics since the clone wars...Obi-Wan baits the move by adopting qui gons fighting stance...he started in his clasic and then moved into his masters...to inspire maul to use the saber bash stun he used on the last guy that used that stance on him. It also acted as a clever call back to the way Cainan beat the grand inquisitor. The double bladed saber staff is weakest in the center... Once you know this, it becomes a detriment to the wielder. In closing Doug is a Neanderthal.

Someone did a video analyzing how much there is in those three moves. Obi Wan starts in an old offensive stance, Maul adopts a stance from Phantom Menace, then Obi Wan changes his stance to a defensive stance, more like Qui Gon's, but Maul refuses to change. Then Maul attacks how he killed Qui Gon but Obi Wan succeeds where Qui Gon lost to Maul. In movements, it summarizes a lot of their character arcs

Season 1 suffers partially because Lucasfilm Animation was hit with mass layoffs and change into Disney's ownership. It got caught up in Disney's new OT only plan, and decreased budget. The reason they used a precise fight for Obi wan and Maul's last fight was the fighting style his master took. Being as it was the one that Maul used to kill his master, he knew what was coming and was able to counter. It mattered in it's preciseness because they have been fighting for years and never forgot that moment.

The weird thing for me about the main characters is that I wasn't that interested in them individually, but together they made a much more compelling unit. Here’s why Mauls death was a powerful moment: He intentionally killed himself. Think about everything Maul has lost over the years. His brother, his mother, his crime syndicate, his place by Palpatine’s side. The only thing he had left that gave his life any meaning was his hatred of Kenobi. So when he met Kenobi for the last time and Kenobi refused to hate him back, Maul realized….he had nothing. So when he fought Kenobi for the last time, Maul used the same set of attacks that helped him kill Qui Gon. Two quick strikes before hitting him on the head with the hilt of his lightsaber. Strike, strike, hilt. This would work on most opponents, but not Kenobi, because Kenobi was there when Qui Gon died. Kenobi played that scene in his head over and over as years passed. So of course Kenobi would be the only Jedi who would know how to instantly counter this attack. So why would Maul use this pattern against the only person in existence who has seen it before? My answer is that I think Maul wanted to die. He realized he had nothing left that gave his life meaning, so he wanted to go out on his terms. In battle against his greatest foe. In a way, it was “Suicide by Jedi”. And to Kenobi’s credit, I think he realized this too. That’s why he was so kind and respectful to Maul in his final moments
@pinktwingirl
@pinktwingirl Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with this theory. I don’t think Maul ever had any intention of winning that fight. I think after living an entire life of nothing but pain and hatred, he just wanted to be done. It’s especially heartbreaking if you read “The Wrath of Darth Maul,” which goes into his childhood and training under Sidious. I think that’s what makes Maul my favorite Star Wars villain: he’s the easiest to empathize with because unlike Vader, he never had any source of love his entire life. The dark side was all he ever knew, and it wore on him.

The Obi-Wan vs. Maul fight in this show is one of my favorites because it's probably the closest to the caliber of the lightsaber fights in the original movies and it's how I always imagined how a fight like that would realistically go down if both parties were actually serious about killing each other. The only other fight I can compare it to is the Luke vs Vader fight in Empire Strikes Back. Sure that fight was longer, but it was pretty clear that Vader was basically playing with Luke like he was holding one of those dangly cat toys. As soon as Luke grazed Vader's shoulder, all it took was three moves in as many seconds and the fight was over.

@@officialmonarchmusic I think it’s a matter of getting a groove and ironing things out. I kinda took the first season of rebels as a bit of a learning curve they had as it was a different network, with different standards and practices, new cast of characters, and on top of that you’re working with both old and new material of the Star Wars mythos. That can make how the first season was understandable. I also think though certain episodes that do feel like filler actually add to stuff on a rewatch. Like the episode where Zeb and Ezra steal the tie fighter it’s not only to add to how they’ll save Kanon in the finale but it’s also to help slowly show Zeb and Ezra gaining a mutual respect for each other.

I feel like the point was missed on the Obi-Wan vs. Maul duel. The whole point of the scene was to show that after years have passed since their rivalry as mortal enemies, Obi-Wan has grown as a person while Maul hasn't learned from his failures whatsoever. Maul went into the fight with every disadvantage possible. He was barely of sound mind by this point, exhausted from wandering the desert for days, and went in unaware of how Obi-Wan was not the same man he once fought over a decade ago. Obi-Wan was both physically and mentally prepared to face him and knew Maul well enough to know how to take advantage of his shortsightedness. If you pay attention to the choreography, Obi-Wan switches his fighting stance early on from his traditional stance to that of his master, Qui-Gon-Jinn. Maul notices this immediately, and attempts to take advantage of Kenobi's familiar fighting style by thoughtlessly lunging in to kill him using the same move he killed Qui-Gon. But obviously, Obi-Wan knew Maul would try this. How could Obi-Wan possibly forget how Qui-Gon was killed? Unfortunately for Maul, his rage and desperation for revenge blinded him from recognizing Obi-Wan became a far wiser and skilled warrior than he could ever be. He was immensely outmatched. Once Obi-Wan uses the opening Maul gives him to cut Maul down, you can see in Maul's face his sudden realization of his failure. This was Obi-Wan's trap, and Maul fell into it. Obi-Wan was thinking entirely on how to outwit Maul. All Maul could think of was killing Kenobi like an animal kills its prey. Maul failed to realize Kenobi was not the same Jedi he once knew. As Obi-Wan points out, despite living in a squalor, he had "risen above" the likes of Maul. Obi-Wan learned from his failures. He grew as a person and as a warrior as a result of them. Maul chose to make the same mistakes time and time again, and not only remained stagnant, but actually regressed both physically and psychologically. This fight was the representation of states of growth in contrast to one another. The brevity of their duel was inevitable.

For many fans that love Star Wars, but don't go too deep into the comics like me, this was the first introduction to Admiral Thrawn, and it was AWESOME. The entirity of the show, this guy doesn't show any sign of desperation, but rather analize and sees how his opponents move and then traps them with the ruthlesness that we associate the Empire with. I saw many of the fights were he was, and in most of them, I feeled like Thrawn wasn't the one who was in fault when the rebels get away with it, it was the fault of stupid undisciplined people under his command, or he would have won. I seriuosly got the vibe of an awesome, outstanding member of the Empire fleet, someone that was intelligent and observative, and ruthless once he won.

I understand a lot of your opinions on this show (even though I love it very much), but I cannot see where you’re coming from on Thrawn. Granted, I haven’t read any other media with him in it, so I don’t know exactly what he’s like in the EU. However, he’s not just another villain. He wins almost 100% of the time. The only times he fails is when his underlings go against him for their own personal glory. If Pryce doesn’t destroy the Tie Defender production, Thrawn would have single handedly won the war for the empire

As Tv Tropes put it, the abruptness of the duel showcases not just Obi-Wan's technique, but also his personal philosophy; that of a supremely talented man who appreciates the brilliance of simplicity. In A New Hope, he could have fought his way through the Death Star, felling troopers left and right, before engaging Vader in an wild, epic lightsaber battle... but the mark of a true master is one who can temper his skill with patience and humility, thus accomplishing more with less. He's not as random or as clumsy as one of the more "modern" lightsaber duelists, but a more elegant warrior from a more civilized age. Which is, of course, the lesson Anakin "Why-Can't-I-Be-A-Master" Skywalker never learned.

I will say that I like this show, but there is actually some brilliance for huge Star Wars nerds like myself in the Obi-Wan vs Maul fight. If you watch what Obi-Wan does, he starts out with his Form 3 stance that he fought with in the Clone Wars, but then he changes his stance to Form 4, which is the form Qui-Gon was a master of, and one Maul has bested before, killing Qui-Gon. Kenobi knows Maul so well that he baited him into attacking him the same way that he did Qui-Gon, then uses the advantage to strike the killing blow. It's honestly one of the coolest and subtlest parts of Rebels, and I love it.

I kinda disagree with how Doug views Thrawn, cause In Star Wars a lot of villains are either angry savages or pompous egotists or a mix of both, with thrawn he’s a strategist who has the most conviction of any other character in Star Wars. He doesn’t care if he loses a small battle because it won’t interfere with his main goal, in fact he literally Learns from the losses to gain more info on his opponents every defeat he obtains a important trait or detail of his enemies that he uses against them when he can And that’s fascinating to me. Plus his rage is there it’s just he knows that anger will cloud his judgement and make him slip up so he does his best to calm himself to be rid of the problem.

A lot of things I completely disagreed Kanan being way better at being blind with the help of supernatural make sense. Unlike Toph and Daredevil, Kanan has the Force. And yes, his sight has enchanted, but that’s most likely a high technique taught by Jedi and he’s a Padawan at best. And face it, he was a kid when he stopped being a Jedi, most likely you forget a sh&t ton just to survive. And some say a robot arm is far better than a regular arm, doesn’t mean you should go around and slicing it off to “improve” Thrawn is still amazing and of course he doesn’t react much to failure. If he did, he wouldn’t be a good Admiral if he reacted like Lord Hater or something. In fact, he beat up a soldier for not accepting defeat because “failure we can learn and improve.” Obi-Wan vs Maul make sense for him to lose not only because how samurai it is, but because Maul went day and night just to find Obi, and clearly he got so exhausted he could barely function anymore. Doesn’t help old age is catching up to him. Hating Chopper is completely fair

5:45 The Kenobi Scene wasnt a ripoff of Rebels, it was one of multiple attempts by Anakin's old friends to get him back. I saw a theory saying that Obi Wan and Ahsoka could only remove half the mask but Luke took it all of. When you see it like that you see it like a verse in a poem it rhymes. You could say the whole series is a metaphor for how it would be living under the empire. Mundanity, annoying, archetypes cause they gotta shoot straight but can't... But then... when you truely await being patience.. the rebellion arrives with hope, intrugiue and amazement! ..Yea that's how I see it. I don't think that's how the series was INTENDED though XD That would be some 5D chess, but I can say... Rebel's peaks.... is what we love about Star Wars and beyond. I take issue with saying that half of Vadar's mask being cut off was ripped off in the Kenobi series. I see something specific happening here. Both Obi-Wan and Ashoka LOVED Anakin as a brother. A strong bond. They both wanted to bring Anakin back and felt the good in him. And their effort (and love) was strong, but not strong enough to remove the entire mask. Ashoka got the right side off, Obi Wan the left side. Their efforts were powerful, but not quite enough. (maybe had they worked together they could have succeeded, but that's a hypothesis for another video) It took the love of his son Luke to remove the ENTIRE mask in Return of the Jedi to bring back Anakin and destroy Darth Vadar for good. This is just something I read into it, and it made the climax of ROTJ even more poignant IMHO.... Peace and Love to all :)

Critic really missed the nail when he criticized the fight between Obi Wan and Maul. It wasn’t about an epic battle but a fight between two old men from polar opposite sides and yet cast out by the same person aka Palpatine. However, while one was able to rise above and continue to live, the other was unable to let go and subconsciously sought death as a release . It was a quiet but powerful moment. A moment in which the Sith and Jedi found themselves on the same side and will be avenged by the Chosen One. A moment where Obi Wan chooses to forgive Maul despite everything

Damn, teh way you apaprently hated Knana to the end hurts XDD Kanan is great character, he goes through a proper character development like Ezra from a lost padawan who never finished his training to a true Jedi. Same with Ezra. Going from a street rat who focuses on himself for his own survival to the best version of himself, making the ultimate sacrifice like his master following the will of the force to save everyone nd for a greater good. I LOVE Rebels. I feel like is so undarrated, some of the best parts are in the little things that slowley build up to the finale and to who the characetr evolve into. Rebels get better in a rewatch when you start noticing the little things. The show may have a weird artstyle and a general wacky animation sometimes, but at least the faces say so much about the characters and how they feel. I love Ezra so much since the literal beggining. I understand people findign him annoying, but he wasn't just that, plus he acted like an actual 14yo may act, especially having to grow up alone after his parents were taken. I belive his "annoyance" shouldn't be a reason to hate him like many say, due to what I said and for the basic thing call "Character development" thats the whole point. Watching the finale and how much he grew as a charceter and a person to then go back to the very begining feels the most satisfying and simply make me love him more. I can't wait for the Ahsoka show to see him again :')

As much as I enjoyed the Obi-Wan/Vader confrontation in Kenobi and thought Hayden Christensen's performance was excellent, Rebels WAS what I immediately thought of while watching it. It really is a play-by-play imitation, with even some of the same dialogue. I'm not sure if one is necessarily better than the other in their own contexts, but the fact that the Kenobi one was a copy of the Rebels one makes it look worse in comparison. I initially hated the fight between Obi-Wan and Maul too, but it's grown on me. They're both older and wiser. They've known each other for decades.That fight wasn't going to look like their fights in the Prequel Era. Kenobi even switches stances, going from his usual Clone Wars pointing-the-blade-at-you one to his New Hope just-hold-it-upright one, to illustrate where he's at now as a warrior. The moves Maul uses were also the ones that he used to kill Qui-Gon, so the fact that Obi-Wan was able to counter them shows that he's learned and moved on from the past whereas Maul has not.

I do think the show gets more hate than it deserves, and I do think a big part of the problem is that this was the sequel to Clone Wars. If this had come out first, I don't think it would have gotten nearly this amount of hate. But I'll be the first to admit, when I heard Clone Wars was cancelled, and I saw the commercials for this as the replacement almost immediately after, I felt like it was the first evidence that I was not going to like Disney managed Star Wars. The trouble is that you cannot watch this one before watching Clone Wars. It just doesn't work that way. You have to watch this afterwards and for me it does feel like a step down. But I wholeheartedly agree that it adds so much lore to the world that is critical to know. I will also go on record saying Thrawn was awesome. I do think they could have utilized him more

The death of Darth Maul is one of the best moment of the show. So they don't jump every where and move their sabers in empty space ? Critic, did you notice the standing of Obiwan ? He tricked Maul into the same move he used to end Qui Gon. At first, I was like you, like "all this for that ?" but yes, I understood the idea only after. Obiwan was already stronger than Anakin in Mustafar, so Maul isn't really a threat (Ashoka herself said so in Clone War). Not physicaly, but in his head, Obiwan manipulated Maul. So the fight end quickly. It was unexpectd, and a bold move from the show. But it was so much more dramatic. One of my top tem favorite episode of all Star wars rebel/clone wars.

The season 2 finale is perfection to me. Full stop: the return of Maul and his decision to make Ezra his apprentice by exploiting the dark side threads that we've seen through two season. A lightsaber battle between Ashoka and Kanan vs Maul vs Inquisitors. Mostly it's Ashoka facing Vader. The raw emotion, heartbreak and betrayal both characters feel at their reunion is palpable. Vader: Anakin Skywalker is dead Ashoka: then I shall avenge him Vader: vengeance is not the Jedi way Ashoka: I am *no Jedi*

In defense of the Maul vs. Obi-Wan fight, it was more of a mental battle than anything. Both are past their prime and it's been over a decade since they last saw each other. They're tired, struggling, and trying to survive the Empire. The only difference is that Obi-Wan has found peace (as much as he can at least), come to terms with what happened, and now has a new goal: protect Luke, the new hope. Maul has not moved on and is stuck in the past. He has no new goal to fight for. It would make sense for Obi-Wan, who has a new goal and accepted what happened, to strike down Maul, who refuses to change. Plus, I don't think it's really practical to see them flipping around in the desert. It would be a little awkward.
