It angered some and astounded others, but after some time has passed, what are Doug's thoughts on the polarizing space opera? Let's take another look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi (also known as Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) is a 2017 American space opera film written and directed by Rian Johnson. It is the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the eighth installment of the main Star Wars film franchise, following The Force Awakens (2015). The film's ensemble cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Frank Oz in returning roles, with Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro joining the cast.

@You tuber as mentioned palatine is the emperor and of course in an empire and we do slowly build up to him If the sequels were the ot it would make more sense not to explore snoke But since they are sequels since the tfa it opened up questions if this man is old and powerful etc Why show up now did he create or took over the first order after the fall of the empire if he could do this why didn't he show up earlier to challenge the emperor The problem with the last jedi in this regard that sure it subverted our expectations but it made snoke a nobody and made nothing with him . You can't make a character and build him and then insult the fans for getting nothing (like rain did ) he didn't even have to do a fan theory he could have done anything something with it . If their Goal was that then why not have kylo be leader from the start ?

Cartoon Network/Disney XD Superheroes I don’t count Rogue One, and I’ve explained many a time why I do not. It’s by no means a great film, it’s just okay. It’s the ending that matters most. As far as the prequels go? At least they held the narrative. At least nothing inexplicable happened and at least everything moved accordingly. It didn’t feel rushed and the films sure as hell kept with the established canon... for the most part, anyways. The Last Jedi does not. It’s a well known fact at this point that it was made before TFA and that it had no direction whatsoever.

I hate the argument that Luke almost killing Kylo goes against character. It has been established that the Skywalker bloodline lives on the edge of light and dark and Luke almost shifted many times in the originals but never did go over fully because he is truly good. He didn't actually kill Kylo because his light side prevailed and he didn't fall victim to the dark which fits perfectly with his character.

>comparing Luke to Yoda. The difference, Doug, is that Yoda exiled himself after the entire Republic turned on them. The Jedi were dead, the clones were hunting them, and the entire system turned against them. They could do nothing. And even then, he at least tried to get rid of the root of it all: Sidious. Only after he failed did he leave. Yoda literally fled for his life. Luke wasnt in such danger Luke did not endure that. Yes his students were killed. But the First Order was still confined in the Uknown Regions and werent hunting him, on the contrary, the New Republic still had power, his friends and allies were still alive, etc etc. Very different circumstances that I am kind of amazed you made this false equivalence

They both ran away because they failed. I would never compare Luke to Yoda, but Luke to Obi Wan is a more fair comparison here. The difference is Luke felt guilty for turning "Luke" into Darth Vader.

This was a really satisfying review to hear. I’m so tired of the vitriol it gets, along with the overcompensating defense people seem to feel they need to give after such vitriol. Like the themes of the film, it’s not purely good nor purely bad: there’s a mix of both. And honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about this movie. The prequels did a good job of evolving Star Wars into a more complex moral series, but the last Jedi expanded upon those themes in ways I’d always wanted, but after Abrams was afraid we’d never see. In that light, I’m hoping that if nothing else, future Star Wars series are willing to further explore some of these fascinating themes. “To say that if the Jedi die the light dies is vanity.”

People got mad over Luke cause it was out of character for him. He was the only one who believed in the good of Vader and was willing to die for that. He refused to kill him and fought against the temptation of the dark side. The whole backstory of how he went into exile is just really out of character for the Luke we grew to know and love. I always saw his exile as him looking at his attempt to recreate the Jedi Order as a failure. He attempted to make a better Order by avoiding some of the old ways he considered part of the reason the Order fell. However, the fact that Ben/Kylo started to turn, he probably saw what happened to Ben as his own fault and was too narrow minded by age to see anything beyond one solution. It wasn't until he saw what he was about to do that he felt shame about it. But, by then, it was too late. At that point, he began to wonder if the Jedi should even exist at all or if the problems in the galaxy were the result of the Jedi meddling.

In empire we first see the emperor as this withered old hologram that has Vader kneeling, and is only alluded to throughout the rest of the film. In return of the jedi, the emperor is introduced as this frail old thing that Vader warns is not as merciful as he is( says the man that goes through officers like a flu patient goes through a box of kleenex). And once Luke is finally in front of him, we see how devious he is. He has baited the rebellion into a trap, and is now egging Luke to strike him down and give in to his aggression and negativity. He is to replace his father. He pits father and son against one another, with the only apparent outcomes being to die or to serve as a slave to the emperor. He cackles and laughs as the duo fight, and once Luke refuses to play his game, he ruthlessly begins to electrocute the young man. The whole time he appeared calm and in control, with nothing appearing capable of stopping him until out of nowhere Vader turns on his master and casts him down the chute. As for Snoke....his menace is more insisted upon, and his motives are largely unexplained. And at no point did he seem like a successor to Palpatine. He looked more like a place holder. And the way he dies shows more his own incompetence and arrogance than any real triumph on Rey and Ren’s part. He looks less like a major villain finally defeated and more a side character slumped over in a lazy heap like a half forgotten load of laundry.

I agree with the critic. Surprise twists and turns and subverting expectations is absolutely fine. Encouraged even. But only if it’s replaced with something that progresses and betters the story and takes us in a direction that has the audience eagerly anticipating what’s going to happen next, even if it didn’t turn out the way the hoped or expected. In this though, literally nothing was replaced. Just too many ‘gotcha’s’ without any pay off whatsoever. The fans were right to be pissed.

Holdo not telling Poe the plan kinda of made sense considering the possibility of a spy sending out their position and Poe did disobey an order earlier. *But* that doesn't mean she should be a jerk to him. The last thing you want in a desperate situation is low morale. Compare to battleship Bismarck's captain, when they were being chased by the entire Royal Navy fleet, he ordered his crew to build a fake smoke funnel as a disguise. It was never used and is very likely a distraction for the crew to have something to do.

Exactly. Subverting the expectations is perfectly fine. Hell, the greatest moment in this franchise was a subversion. In the original Star Wars, Darth Vader was the man who betrayed and murdered Anakin. No matter how often Lucas went back on it in interviews years later, he was *not* Anakin at first. So when Empire comes out and we get that epic twist, that there is subverting the audience's expectation. We thought we were getting Luke finally going up against the man who murdered his father, only to discover he *was* his father and his whole life was a lie. We expected one thing and it was subverted. Thing is, they had something to replace that expectation and made it worth it. TLJ on the other hand doesn't do that. They subvert things left and right like it was going out of style. The identities of Rey's parents that they made such a big deal about in TFA? Nobodies, long dead, moving on. The mysterious ruler of this new faction that is dominating the galaxy in an attempt to restore the Empire *and* who corrupted the son of our beloved OT heroes? Nope, who cares, he's not important and dead now. Oh, ok, so how about the Resistance (which admittedly is my weakest part of TFA aside from the whole final act). They clearly have some super top secret plan to get away, carry the fight on to another day, right? Big nope there. Run and run and run until you are out of fuel and the fleet is dead, all while assuring everyone "there is a plan" but never going beyond that, only for that plan to be "there's a planet over there, we're going to hide" all the while the First Order is right there. Holdo makes a big deal about staying behind on the Raddus while everyone escapes and she's clearly going to do the sacrifice play. Nope, she sits back and watches as the transports get blown away one by one and does nothing about it, not even attempting to save them or move the ship to tank the hits and provide cover, *anything* until she finally just arbitrarily decides to do the ram. The biggest problem of TLJ is that they made some major subversions but had absolutely no idea or plan to replace them. They took things that were set up brilliantly in the previous film and got people *excited* for Star Wars again, fueling the hype and speculation for so long until the film comes out and they toss it all aside. Ok, that's fine, so long as you have something worth wile to replace it, such as the Vader reveal mentioned before. But they *didn't*, they just said "yeah, that all doesn't matter and you should forget it" without giving us anything that does matter to replace it. If you're going to throw out the big draws your film has going for it, you best be ready to make up for it.

Johannes Mäkilä You missed the point. It’s not that they made something fans didn’t like, it’s how they went about addressing it. There were absolutely some legitimate criticisms, such as writing and characterization. But the executives just brushed them aside and attacked the fans for even daring to have a differing opinion. Yes, some of them were indeed just whiny fanboys who don’t like change, but the executives pinning their failures on the fandom and then insulting them is equally childish. Now compare that to George Lucas. He made tons of things fans didn’t like, but he never once insulted them for their opinions. He at least noted their criticisms and did his best to address them. A perfect example is JarJar. He was originally written to have a larger involvement in the prequel trilogy. But fans hated him, so he cut down his role in episodes 2 and 3. Regardless of people’s opinion of him, at the very least he acted like a professional.

Love the new characters, the various worlds, the creatures, and even how the filmmakers continue to build the storytelling as well as adding to the mythos Even the Force has new elements added to it which is refreshing The color scheme in here is really nice mixing red and white Of course we can’t forget the many inside references and callbacks to the older films as is tradition I really like the moral psychology behind this with many of its themes like mentorship being invigorating and not always having to fight but run instead Warriors can be deified and romanticized, hypocrisy can be hubris, maybe there is no good or evil just morally grey areas, maybe we should let the past die, the true burden of masters is what students grow beyond, there’s always a need to accept imperfection, the only way to get rich is to profit off of war The worst part of the movie is definitely the pacing yet it does try to break away from traditional ‘Star Wars’ formula after every other plot thread has been explored Snoke is also very underutilized in this which is a shame but this is truly the best acting from both the late Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, they’ve solidified themselves as Leia and Luke for over four decades Luke shows his level of frustration with Rey being empathetic on how to approach the Jedi way of training This movie is definitely polarizing since many will feel it betrays the original canon but also adds new elements although it doesn’t answer all the questions I really appreciate the film for taking risks despite pacing issues and some things not making any sense

4:00 - The Emperor WAS mentioned in the first one. Tarkin tells the top guys on the Death Star that the Emperor had disbanded the Senate, and they're all astonished. Then in ESB, we find out that not only is he the leader of the Empire, but he is also directly Vader's master and possible Dark Side user. When we see him in ROTJ, he comes across as a cackling old man, but it's revealed when Luke confronts him that he is indeed a master of the Dark Side. There's a build up. And there are three more movies that show how he came to become Emperor. Snoke appeared out of nowhere with no explanation, SOMEHOW seduced Kylo to the Dark Side, had his Starkiller Base blow up a bunch of planets that were never explained in the films, and then died because he made the same mistake as the Emperor. He SUCKS as a character. It would have been cool if TFA started a little back and let us see how Snoke got into power, since he wasn't even mentioned in the previous six Star Wars films. There's no flow whatsoever between 6 and 7.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with Doug's assessment of Luke. While he may not always have been an optimistic, happy-go-lucky character; he certainly wasn't the type to abandon all hope, go somewhere isolated to die alone, and then leave behind a map to his location in the form of a Droid. That sounds more like what an awkward teenager with pseudo-suicidal thoughts might do. Even in his darkest moments in the novels, Luke never abandoned the memories and symbolic strength of the way of the Jedi. Him throwing away the light saber? Edgy, to be sure, but not in character in the slightest. That lightsaber is a memento at the least, and at most it is a symbol of his dedication, strength, and mastery of the force whilst training under Obi Wan. I'm not going to rage against your review, but I know a personal Bias when I see one Doug. You're accepting of Luke's attitude, at least it seems, more because you identify or sympathize with bitter characters that abandon the traditions of yore. Hell, that's how you review movies! I mena Luke's only role models were Obi-wan, who abandoned his Jedi duty to the galaxy to live as a hermit, and Yoda, who abandoned his Jedi duty to the galaxy to live as a hermit, so I didn't see any issue with Luke abandoning his Jedi duty to the galaxy to live as a hermit. Luke suffered a huge loss. He was hte HERO who was set on bringing the Jedi Order back into the galaxy, and it was his personal failure, even fore but a moment of weakness, that led to the mass loss of life of his students, and the wiping out of the new generation of Jedi. It's on par with the massive defeats suffered by Yoda and Obi-wan. But that also comes from Luke's concept of hte force as a necessarily black and white, all or nothing doctrine. It makes sense that in the face of such a tragic, sweeping, and personal loss, that he would be done with the fight. And even more so, that lightsaber was the lightsaber of his father, not his. The last time he held it, he lost his arm to Darth Vader just before the big reveal. And even otherwise, the last time he held a lightsaber at all was when he nearly killed his own nephew, leading to the tragedy that spurred him into exile in the first place. OF course he doesnt want that to be handed to him. Aside from the burden of galaxy no longer being his to bear, that tool is a reminder of the things that went so very wrong. I love his reaction. I also love his ultimate solution in the end. I think both speak to who Luke is and how he's grown. Back in his training, he was hte first ti rush into conflict, headstrong and desperate to save people. In the end he was the last one to join the fight, wary of taking on the mantel he had been given as the savior of the galaxy. In the end, he stuck to his convictions, and was able to stand with everyone, without rushing in to a fight or becoming the sole jesus figure of hte galaxy all over again, becuase now the next generation has no choice but to take up the mantel adn to change.

Along with Vice Admiral Holdo’s complete inability to lead a fleet, the horrific explanation for the First Order’s rise to power, and Leia’s stupidity for never explaining the plan to Poe or anyone else save for Holdo. Do people seriously consider miss Purple Hair to be a good character? Because if that’s the case, I’d love to hear them try and argue it. The problem - and most frustrating part - is all those disparate elements never came together to make an interesting story, they were just a set of puzzle pieces that some incompetent idiot shoved together incorrectly so instead of a coherent picture, it became a mess of mishmashed, disjointed parts of a picture that didn't make sense together.

Doug seems to intentionally ignore the drama surrounding controversial movies in order to paint the fans as toxic, rabid fanboys and never mentions how the studios go out of their way to slight, insult, mock and alienate the fans. As with GB2016, TLJ could have been just a mediocre movie with a lukewarm reception, but the blatant open and unapologetic attacks on the fanbase are what pushed the general opinions from "meh" to "I hate this". Don't get me wrong, I long for the days when a movie stood or fell on its own merits and things like Twitter, Facebook and other social media didn't tell us what and how to think or influence and control our daily lives so much, but that is the world we live in and those influences have to be accounted for when talking about why something as innocuous and inconsequential as a movie succeeding or failing.

Indiana would never cry and sob in fear at the idea of fighting someone James Bond would never settle down, quit his job and marry money penny. Harry Potter would never sell his friends for money. Jack Sparrow would never clean up his act, get a job in politics and start helping his community. Luke Skywalker would never even consider Murdering a family member in cold blood. He risked everything to save his friends and family and now he’s going to kill Kylo in his sleep because he ‘might’ do something? Personally I hated the fact that they killed off Snoke and have Kylo Ren as the main villain of Episode 9. They establish in Last Jedi that Snoke could destroy Ren with a flick of his wrist at any time, but then he dies in a stupid way only to have a considerably weaker villain. Kylo Ren poses no threat to the protagonists, Rey already defeated him in lightsaber combat in episode 7 and Luke made a fool out of him in episode 8. Snoke in his 15 minutes of screen time came off as much more threatening even if he is super under developed. If they wanted to do something surprising in The Last Jedi they should have had Snoke kill both Rey and Kylo Ren and then face off against Luke in episode 9.

As usual, the common criticisms of the movie I hear aren't brought up. I haven't heard a single person complain about the whole thing with Luke going into hiding. What I HAVE heard people complain about, including myself, is completely changing Luke's personality by having him consider killing Kylo. That's no small fucking thing, it goes against the entire essence of his character. This is the guy who didn't even give up on Darth Vader, still had some hope for him, and had that hope CONFIRMED and the notion reinforced when Vader did turn back to the good side. If there's one thing that defines Luke as a character, it's never giving up on someone no matter how far gone they seem to be. And I'm supposed to believe he drew a lightsaber on his nephew because he got a spooky feeling? Nope. Don't even care much about Star Wars and that was still a glaring flaw to me that indeed made this not the same Luke Skywalker. Not my Luke Skywalker, one might even say. EDIT: To people saying "He's aged, he's different"... Yeah, sure. I could buy that. If I got to see it. But I didn't. And personally, I don't tolerate significant character changes happening off-screen. If a character is going to go through some major development, it's usually a good idea to let your viewers partake in that so they can see the organic change. All I see here is a timeskip and suddenly boom, he's a totally different person from last we saw him. That's what I call lazy writing. AND to people saying "The Force did it"... Well that's just one step away from saying "A wizard did it". I didn't like it when The Force was used to explain away plot holes in the original trilogy, and I don't like it here. Less so here, really, as cinema should have evolved a lot since then. At least the originals have the excuse of being 40 years old. I don't even buy the explanation I've been given to begin with, but even if I did, you shouldn't let space-magic be the explanation for character developments.

It's like being in the room with a child hitler. Would you kill that child if you knew he'd grow up and be responsible for millions of deaths? "The more I think about it, the less I like it" was mine, my buddy's, and my dad's takeaway when we saw this in theaters. Then when it came to DVD, I rewatched it, and there was more I ended up liking, like Rey's scenes with luke on the island. But the parts I disliked I disliked more. That's the film by itself, but what really soured things for me was Lucasfail shitting on fans over it. I still haven't seen Solo because of that. The way they've handled themselves as a company making a product that is successful or a failure based on audience participation has been unforgivable. They deserve to fail if that's how they're gonna conduct themselves. I seriously don't know if I'm gonna go see episode 9 when it comes out, also because 8 leaves me wanting very little. I don't walk away caring what happens next in this film, and that's just sad for a major Star Wars entry.

One reason I love this movie is because of the practical effects. The porgs, the close-up space-horse and crystal fox, the random aliens, puppet Yoda... I respect the hell out of it.
@SPM0717
@SPM0717 5 жыл бұрын
The space horses and crystal foxes were CGI. At least try and recognise what's practical effects and what's not. Hell they did make realistic puppets of the foxes but then completely CGI'd over them so what was the point?

I thought this was alright. I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan, but I understand its appeal. I'm sure there are some people who are gonna absolutely hate it, and that's fine. I just think that the overwhelming hate is overblown. Sure, it's not perfect but at the same time, it's nowhere near the same level of something like Dragonball: Evolution or The Last Airbender. Personally, I just thought it was okay. Not an absolute masterpiece, but not the worst thing I've ever seen.
@TheDerek14

I guess it was just the build up effect. The forced unleashed was seen in a way better light then this movie but still had apparent issues that could have been fixed in the sequel. They weren't fixed and even created more issues with Both the character Ray and Luke. They butchered the characters and just ended up destroying any hope people had for the next entry in the franchise, as fans had no faith in Disney's ability to release a competent Star Wars sequel.
@TuckerBowChicka1
@TuckerBowChicka1 5 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason why the hate is quite overwhelming is because of how idiots at Lucasfilms treated fans who criticized the film, making the hate grow and grow, never to let settle down, only adding fuel to the growing fire of hatred.
@alpharabbit2353

The thing is, they absolutely ruined what the previous movie set up. Subverting expectations only works when it's vaguely hinted at, not deliberately drawn attention to. Then they got all the old characters horribly wrong... Even Mark Hamill hates the movie and what it did to Luke. Rey is powerful for the sake of it. None of her powers earned. Even the OP Akakin Skywalker trained for 10 years before episode 2. Luke wasn't competent with the force or even a lightsaber until episode 6. Yet Rey was showing them up in just her first movie. And it's wondered why this is so insulting. Sure, Obi-Wan beat Maul in episode 1, but any sane person knows that was a fluke, and even he had far more training than Rey

@@TheDerek14 Neh. Star Wars always were just a high budget space opera. Take a note that most real flaws were mentioned by people who like it. Most haters are to dumb to spam word "shit" or in rare cases praise superiority of Prequels. Also real fans would lough from claims that Rai and Luke are butchered.. seriously.. Luke was a Sith! He even has a red kyber in the movie. He at that point was broken man after all what happen in EU. And fact that New Trilogy reference KotOR, and not like idiots claim New Hope is enough spoiler regard Ray'van ;D

@@TuckerBowChicka1 It has literally nothing to do with that. Whole hate was instigated by neo-Nazis what also manipulated Disney into firing James Gunn. Same thing goes regard bullshit about people taking seriously "SJW" L3-37 from Solo. Those transparently aren't fans, but a teenage bandwagoners and Prequel fanboys trying prove that they favorite was better. Thing is that whole Tumbler drama transparently go beside what people talk about it in real life.

This was the first movie I saw in theaters where I felt after it was over. I had no interest to see where the story was going or what was happening next. I just felt empty. I've seen all the main movies before this but never bothered with Rise of Skywalker after this (which is probably for the best, I hear)

Just an observation, Emperor was mentioned in Star Wars "The imperial senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I just received a word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic has been swept away" - said Tarkin. So he was mentioned in one sentence as I recall, but what a sentence it was. Single man has the power to do that. Heavy.
