5 жыл бұрын

Chad Reed is one of the most influential and iconic motorsports athletes to every come out of Australia. His accomplishments are known to even the most casual Australian sports fan and are the stuff of legend to die hard fans. Today Chad announced a 1 year deal with the JGR Suzuki team for 2019 and we sat down with Chad after the Aus X Open for one of the most epic editions of Gypsy Tales yet.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
If this is your first time listening to Gypsy Tales, this might help to give you some context. The show's host Jase Macalpine is a professional film maker that has spent the last 10 years traveling the world filming action sports, predominantly motocross and supercross, for companies like FOX, Red Bull, Suzuki and more. This is not an interview... This is a podcast with no organized questions or direction and the goal is to try to record a conversation that would take place if a couple of friends sat down at a BBQ with no cameras rolling. Thanks for watching!
You can also find the podcast on iTunes and Spotify.

Hey guys! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has listened and taken the time to write a post... For sure not closed off to constructive feedback. Just thought I might share my thoughts and maybe show you my perspective with it all, and the method to the approach. I think first of all there has to be a distinction to what I'm trying to be. There is a line between and interview and a podcast, and I think there are people that like the interview style and people who like it to just be a random chat. I am way more on the random chat side of things which makes me not run these things like an interview. I can tell you now, Chad ain't signing up to do a three hour 'interview' with anyone he isn't obligated too. So the product can't be an 'interview'. I have spent the last ten years as the guy who got sent questions by brands and stood there behind a camera asking them and I'm not into it any more. I've heard every answer to every questions at this point. So to anyone that has commented saying something about this 'interview' or referring to me as an 'interviewer' I really just have to shrug that off. It's not what I'm going for at all. It's a conversation and a conversation is something that goes back and forward between too people. With the interrupting... I get it. I am conscious of and it's something I want to do less of. But to again try add some perspective I will explain a couple of might thoughts as to why I do it. People alway ask me 'How do you get people to talk for so long' and I always respond as a joke 'I just don't let them finish their first sentence'. But it is kind of true. The thing that kills these things is an awkward silence. And I have no questions in front of me and I do zero prep work. So I feel like I need to keep adding, digging when it gets slow and adding my own experiences to keep it moving along. There is also no set time limit on these things. If the conversation gets to that awkward pause stage, Chad picks up his phone, sees the million messages he's got and decides it's time to bail. I'd rather do my part to keep the conversation going than to let the guest get bored and bail. I would be talking shit if I said I haven't listened to one back and thought I was an idiot for butting in. But I have done nearly 150 hours of these things this year and you just can't nail every minute. But again, I do wanna work on getting that balance right. I think it's worth adding too that people generally don't enjoy talking about themselves for three hours. If you went to a BBQ and talked for three hours about your self, people would think your a dick. So I think part of what the guests enjoy is that it's easy, theres no set questions or agenda going in and the chat just goes where it goes. I think too there's something about the loose style, with the over the top about of fucks, that lets these dudes relax. When was the last time you hear chat say 'Fuck yes sign me up' when talking about a contract. And again I want this to be what we would talk about on the beers at a bbq when the cameras aren't rolling, not an interview. And I think the most important thing about this is that I just do this for fun. It is a really really fun way to spend a few hours with people. And I have made really great friends out of this. People like Chad who I really didn't have a lot to do with and I even admitted at the start that I used to look for reasons not to like him... People like Adam Greentree who I talk to regularly. So I think that needs to be noted. I am really not trying to bring people a 60 minutes tell all with Chad Reed. I'm just trying to roll the cameras on two people talking shit about the similar stuff they are into, or new things they are into that I haven't heard of. Take it for what it is. Or try find another one of these with Chad that goes for almost three hours. Anyway guys, just a couple of my thoughts and thanks again. Jase

I can understand where some people are coming from but I also prefer this style of podcast video that's not the same boring interview like on TV, enjoyed the chat you guys had and got to find out some things that Chad has not really spoken about in depth to the public. Thanks for the video.

I liked this interview. Honestly there was some interrupting going on, but that's genuine interest coming through. The same people that complain about that are the same people that would complain about reed going onto a different podcast, getting asked generic questions, following a strict interview structure, and talking to a guy that knows nothing about him or the sport. I appreciate the back and forth and I appreciate that the interviewer has some insider insight and history with the sport and various riders, because it allows Reed to turn off his press conference facade get deeper.

It lit a fire in Chad, Chad made it a point in the 250 class to give him hell every lap . This man has raced against McGrath, Carmichaels prime, Bubbas prime , windhams prime, villipotos prime, Dungeys prime, tomacs prime and outran em all . True fkn stud

Love the content of what was discussed, very cool to hear stories from Chad that are not the normal sit down rapid fire questions, but it gets very hard to listen to when you constantly try and answer for him, plus the F’s and C’s get thrown in far too much, a few F bombs are ok but it felt like you were using the F word like a comma.

Hey Jase; yes it was fantastic to hear Chad talk for 3 hours and yes you did a great job to get him on! We don't need to be told the difference between a cast and an interview just listen to the cc cas it was constructive and the best interviewers/casters dont need to tell their own stories they just listen.

First of all to Jase I wanted to say thank you for this incredible podcast. It was one of my favorite that I have ever listened to, with one of the greatest legends our sport will ever see. Secondly, to all the people bitching about him "interrupting" Chad its just a classic case of keyboard warriors needing something to complain about so that they can feel included. I read the comments and kept waiting for this egregious interruption of Chad which quite literally never came. This situation was a very delicate balancing act between, superfan girling over Chad, along with trying to keep Chad entertained, along with creating and interjecting meaningful banter/content/context etc to keep the conversation going. If Jase just sat there and let Chad talk about himself without directing or fueling the fire this would've been over in 20 minutes. Im very thankful for what Jase brought to the table as he is a very knowledgeable and well versed industry insider himself. Not to mention the fact that of all people, if Chad Reed was feeling disrespected he would've had no issue telling the interviewer to fuck off but Chad stayed engaged, laughing and enjoying the entire experience for almost 3 hours. Not just any "jo-blow" nobody with a microphone could've landed this interview, and if they did Chad would have had no interest in some internet fan boy trying to blow his pole the entire time. Great content, amazing interview. Thankful this one is up keep up the great work.

Interesting to hear Chad's comments about how the current 450 crop dosnt do it for fun so to speak, I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on how he sees Jet Lawrance in that respect and how far he can take it, I mean this kid looks like he genuinely loves it. I see the celebrations after he wins and it looks like genuine excitement where as you see the 450 boys and it's like yeah I rode well I'd like to thank my sponsors blah blah blah standard stuff. In my opinion I think this is where Hunter falls down he's just to serious all the time and that pressure reflects in his interviews and his results frustrating to finish second all the time ....... but shit I'd just be stocked to make a qualifier let alone a main event, a perspective check or reality check maybe but it's the same attitude as the Tomics Webs Andersons so serious and lacking real passion.

On a technical level what the guys do now is absolutely incredible and I love watching greatness but there is just something ab the RC/JS7/Reed era. I’m partial bc that’s the era I grew up with but just going back and watching them today, the racing was way more interesting, way more battles and way more riding on the edge. The battles were better, the style was 10000x better and being able to fuck trophy girls on havasu automatically makes it better lmfao

REED/SUZUKI/JGR/#1. Unreal revealing interview! Aussie Legends! RC was the no BS rider and took it from the beer gut Honda BS era. Suzuki was the no BS bike always has been. If we being REAL I wish Reed didn't look up to Honda and Mcgrath so much that was his weakness in my mind never looked better as himself an Aussie underdog most comfortable on Yellow like many other legends regardless of the money. RD, RC, CR, T.P, RD, KR. #1. Haven't forgotten Reed back on Yellow in Perth first time and then one of his greatest seasons (NEXT LEVEL) looking forward to this season!!!

This didn't age well, as too the rivalry. Tomac and Sexton is shaping up to be one of the all time greats. Also in this new era there are a lot more guys in the mix, until 2022, Anderson Tomac in SX and Tomac Sexton out doors you had 5 guys on the same level. Almost throughout our entire sport, the different Era's were dominated by one or two guys. What Tomac has done in the last couple years saves this era and it may be the best ever. Just because of the depth of the field. This year has been at least as epic as any other period.

And you should keep your opinions very short.. I listen to your podcast because I want to hear your guests, but it's 80% jase's opinion and 20% on the guests opinion. And stop saying 'like' so fucken much!! 80% guest- 20% host!

Are you for real? It's a 3 hour podcast not a short interview where chad speaks the whole time and the interviewer asking short questions. Its a conversation between 2 men if anything and the interviewer input is what makes it interesting because it makes the guest go deeper into the topic.

GYPSY TALES relax your undies Champ, take the constructive criticisms the chin.... it was just annoying when he would try and answer a question or finish a question and you would jump straight in. It was a fucking good 3 hours of interviewing AND I think it was good for our sport because nothing like this has happened before.. keep up the good work, just maybe consider what we are saying for next time

So yeah, Chad Reed doesn't need you to finish every sentence for him. Also, he knows you are there, we know you are there...less "yeah" and grunts would make for a better show also.

Like said the sport isnt like it was in these guys hey days. Im from that time and my thoughts are that the 4 stroke has had something to do with it . All these prime time guys they talked about all earned there recognition on two strokes . The smell sound and visually watching them on the two stoke was different. I get it 4 strokes are faster and easier to ride . But like he said nobody gives a shit . Still the greatest sport in the world I raced amateur and rode for 15 yrs during that time and Watching these guys back then made me want to ride = me buying shit from motorcycle shops. Watching the new generation makes me so miss the Jeremy - reed days . Glad I can say I am from the same generation and all those top guys were the shit totally different riding and personality for there self and the sport.

I got 40 seconds in and I was already annoyed with the host.. stfu and let him talk plus noone cares about your stories, let the discussion evolve with letting Chad talk. Eta- after watching this, I yelled " omg don't interupt and let him talk!!!!" At least 10 times .. too many. Must have been frustrating for chad, he wanted to expound in alot of subjects but this guy shot him down or finished his sentences for him... which is a huge pet peeve of mine.

They got to talking on money and it's not like it was.... I truly believe mma took alot of this money and fans. I still thought these guys received a good pay check. Majority of people still do it for the love. Let they said, even for a privateer, it doesn't make sense to do it. It's for the love.

It’s like Reed was interviewing Jase, or at least Jase thought so. Jase is the Adam Corolla of moto; get a guy on that people want to hear from and use that guys star power to draw listeners/viewers so he can tell his own story. Quite frustrating as I’d love to hear Reedy get to finish an answer or story without it being hijacked. I think the term is “askhole” ,if I’m not mistaken, when someone asks a question so they can interrupt/disagree or facilitate their airing of their own opinion on the matter.

Thanks for the "Converview". Chad has truly grown into a great American since he left Australia, and we really dig that here in the USA. Oh well, that is what happens when people move here to achieve their dreams. I am sure he is going to retire from racing soon. Wanna bet he does not move back? Now, constructive criticism: 1) Please don't bad mouth the USA. You don't know much about it, and you won't make many good friends on this side of the pond. 2) F This, F That, F Everything! If we want to hold up some standards, drop the swearing. You don't need it IMO. (that was a compliment). 3) Get your audio under better control. Another vid, I could not hear you. This vid has a bass guitar noise in the background that is too loud on many occasions, and it competes with you guys. 4) Let your guests finish speaking. There are 2 parts to a conversation, (and I am working on this myself), speaking, and listening. I think we as a people are getting bad at the listening part, and probably why we are not as sharp as we could be. (public schools are reverse) Likes? I dig a 3 plus hour show. I am working in my garage, and love that I know I will fill in 3 hours with quality MX programming. You have a good voice for broadcast. There was nothing boring in this show. It was a great conversation overall. Well, that is what I see so far. I did enjoy all 3 hours accept for the little parts I mentioned, and I wish you luck and fortune with your channel. In a free society, you never know how far your effort can grow. Amaze yourself. :) Doug in rural Michigan USA.

If the 2012 CRF was so good, why not just continue to ride it in 2013, 2014, etc. I've never heard or read any interviews talk about this. If all the testing had been done and the settings were dialed in, can riders just ride an older model year? Is there an AMA rule against that that I'm unaware of?
@robertstewart899
@robertstewart899 5 жыл бұрын
There is rules against it. From the AMA rule book: 1.1 Homologation of Motorcycles Only motorcycles homologated by AMA may be used in competition. AMA will only accept applications for homologation from motorcycle manufacturers or their distributors. a. Once a motorcycle has been homologated, it may be used until such time that the homologated motorcycle no longer complies with the technical rules or a maximum of five years.
@calebclinton5334
@calebclinton5334 5 жыл бұрын
@@robertstewart899, Ok cool, thanks. It sounds like he would've been able to ride the 2012 up until the 2017 season if he wanted. The 2012 model would've still met tech standards and was still within the allowable five year period from when AMA recognized it as homologated.
@robertstewart899
@robertstewart899 5 жыл бұрын
@@calebclinton5334 Technically yes. But i don't think Honda would allow it. They probably not too concerned about some guys in the lcq riding a bike thats a bit older but when their top guys are not on the latest equipment its not a good look from a marketing stand point. They want consumers to buy the latest model.
