Eric, I think you're just going to have to accept that you're not just a heck of an auto mechanic, you are a genuine and entertaining guy. I'll watch you trace a wire, plant a garden, clean a gun, or paint a fence. The banter and the positive approach to things always brings me back, no matter the subject.

It's true Eric! Great "KZfaqrs" typically have 1 of 2 things going on at all times...intriguing subject matter and/or intelligent, informative, witty commentary. Without them, viewership (I would imagine) would certainly decline. You sir, have managed to find the "sweet spot" of combining them both, without seeming to be trying too hard,...which is one of the most common failures that I see from others. Granted, your content interests me specifically, but can attest to the fact that family members and friends that have watched episode(s) with me, have gone on to watch on their own. I think you can attribute that to your ability to be entertaining, as well as informative. I can honestly say, that I have always had a healthy respect for techs and mechanics, but after watching more than 150 (give or take) videos, have a newfound appreciation for what you all do. Great job!..Great channel! Keep on truckin', and I'll watch all the videos you can upload! Big fan, Jason L. Dayton, OH

Please don't worry about this video being less than exciting. It's great to have a video about tracing a broken wire since at some point I have a feeling many of us will be doing some of that. I drive an '07 Silverado with 155k on it and love it to death. Not saying anything bad about any other truck, just that I like mine. You're videos are consistently entertaining and informative Eric, and thank you for what you do. As a DIY guy I need all the training I can get so I can diagnose problems, and leave the part gun in it's holster until the real cause is known.. Have a great day!

I had an 83 town car with no power to the fuel pump in the tank. I had power up at the engine and the relays were working I could hear them actuate. But I had no power going out of the relay to the pump. Took the covers off the relay the contact points were pristine and they had power I checked. You're going to love what the problem was. The electrolytic Grease on the wiring harness connector had dried out! It created in insulation between the contacts of the connector and the contacts in the relay. Believe it or not I had to clean the connectors going into that harness that ran down to the pump and the connectors on the bottom of the relay to fix the problem. I won't tell you how many times I drop the tank trying to figure out what the heck was going on

Eric -- please don't worry about the video being boring. First off, your demeanor and banter make even finding a broken wire super entertaining. Second, seeing the tedium in the detail and process is what makes ME a better mechanic. Seeing how you go about the troubleshooting step by pains taking step is a great lesson on how to approach a problem. Much better than just simply saying "Find the broken wire..."

Video was not boring. There are many of us viewers that benefit from this specific type of documentation. Trust me... I did not learn anything new but you reassured me by your process that I am on the right track in the wire break finding process and the importance of wire wound repair. As a DYS enthusiast, I will be more confident and patient in my next broken wire chase because of you. Thank you for that! By the way, I agree on Power Probe limitations on thick wire looms. I thought it was just me...LOL.

Eric, you don't need to defend your method of troubleshooting that problem. You are a highly skilled logical thinking service tech, and the proper way to troubleshoot something, is whichever way you feel works best for you. You were dead on in your analysis of what the problem was, and you fixed it properly, what else can anyone ask for ? Have a great weekend.

I switched from tech (15yrs) to a line repairman for a plant that builds trucks (don't wanna say which plant just to cover my rear from employer) but it amazes me the amount of harness' that are damaged and have to be repaired. The machines they use to transfer frames and the ones that flip them over are unforgiving to wires, hoses and lines that weren't secured down properly. but that being said we have awesome repair people that can make wiring repairs and connector changes as the truck is going down the line. we build between 750 and 850 trucks during a 10 hour shift

I love chasing/repairing these type of issues. It is so refreshing to see the pride in your work diagnosing properly and not just throwing unnecessary parts at the vehicle. Even coating the pierced areas to avoid creating a down the road issue. No one watching, usually left by others. Definitely a problem created when vehicle was new. Odds of seeing another one with that same problem would be like winning the lottery.

Tracing wires with the phone company, we used to just use a spare pair and call it fixed. Tie a knot in the bad pair so it wont get used again, and off to the next call we go. Out of all the electronics they gave us to use for tracing, They all had the same problem as you explained. Your way seems to be the best , due to your working on a harness that maybe 20 foot or so, we were troubleshooting cables 20 miles. We used a Mega Ohms meter, it would get you to maybe 100 foot or so to the open, then you just go to the nearest splice can, or just spare pair it. And go to lunch early :) Nice wire tracing video.

You always got a guy who thinks he knows the best way to find a problem, but the funny part is, and I'd be willing to put money on it, these are usually the same guys who don't fix these things on a daily basis in the professional world. I've also found guys like this in the shop and it's funny, because it seems to me, not always, but usually, that their better ways of fixing things always end up as comebacks and can you guess who get's to fix them, because it sure as hell ain't the guy who had the better method! Good video, you do good work as always, thanks for all you do.

When doing electrical checks like your performing on this vehicle the first step that i take is hooking up two high quality jumper wires directly from the battery to the area of the work. That way i'm not looking for good grounds everywhere and I can check my test light each time. It ends up saving me time and frustration. Great video!

There is a special breed that knows the art of wire chasing. I like this one because it was a manufacturer's defect. These are the ones that other shops pass along since it take a "one wire" (electrician). Personally I don't have Snap on tester because of the cost. I do have 50 dollar code reader that is helpful just giving a direction for the money light. When that baby comes on there are so many possibilities. The other really good thing I like about your videos is your mouth had a direct connection to you brain. I never have to worry about having to guess what your thought process is. I hate these videos that have no or little comments during the repair. You have a great camera and audio. And yes, I love to hear that door opening and the phone ringing.

Fair play Eric, great video, excellent work. I really enjoyed watching it. It's a refreshing change to see someone admit they've made a mistake. Usually mechanics, including some that you've ended up fixing their botch jobs for, just stand there and lie to your face, "sure we replaced the part", when they plainly haven't, or "it was like that when it came in here", even though you know it wasn't.

Really let my thinking how this can make, corrosion cant get into a wire that easy unless it was damaged when installed and time (and corrosion) did the rest of the job. Awesome video! As a fellow tech, I am also a subscriber. I ran into something similar about 4 years ago with a 2000 Chevy Blazer that had a broken wire between the ECM and Canister Vent valve. Instead of using power, I ohmed out the wire. With a long wire and probes, I tapped into the Valve connector and set the multi-meter to beep as I moved along the harness. Obviously, when I reached the open, it didn't beep. Any way that gets the job done properly is a good way to go.

It's always amazing that a broken wire will be found on the harness of a fairly new or undisturbed vehicles electrical system . It's shameful , we want to trust in a new product but quality has been lost somewhere in production. Well , at least it keeps pros like Eric O working 👍

Got the same code on my ‘18 colorado, truck runs and drives fine. Cleared the code to see if it would come back and it did before I even turned the truck off. This’ll be fun to diagnose and fix

The cost of vehicle ownership must be insane. because of the salt and winter snow... 3 years old and has more rust than my 24 year old Wrangler... that spent it's whole life in California and then West Texas. Love your channel.. keep up the good work.

I am dealing the same issues on my 17 now. What was the issue with your 17? Ive already had it in the shop a few times. mostly tranny issues. But a broken wire for fuel pump and now a code that reads fuel pump control module.

2017 silverado, came in last week with parking lights staying on, couldnt figure it out except we knew that one of the park light wires was getting mystery power from somewhere, and grounding the ckt would eliminate the problem for a day or so. today it shows up with no start, half power to the FPM, found bad wires in almost the same spot, this fixed both our issues. Yay.

Believe me, if I lived in your area I'd be bringing my car to you. Since you don't say who it is who is doing all this hack work in your area, it would be a crap shoot of hitting that mechanic if I went anywhere else. In my area, we don't get rust like that. I have a careful, thorough mechanic like you. My car, which he has been working on for 14 years, is 19 years old this month and has 225,000 miles on it. Everything works on it except the ABS. He has done such good work on it all this time that I may just drive it the rest of my life. My hat is off to any good mechanic like you.
