In this video we give this old 2007 Chevy Express van some overdue TLC. We replace the rear brake pads, rotors, calipers, backing plates, axle seals and parking brake shoes. This is a very common repair in the rust belt unfortunately. It is not overly difficult but time consuming. Enjoy!

If this video alone does not make you a SOLID SMA supporter/subscriber, I don't know what will. Lol. Eric O has one of the rustiest vehicles in his shop and knows the owner beats the living hell out of it on a daily basis, yet he still takes the time to do an extraordinary job! No skipping steps or lack of quality. That's what separates SMA from the rest. He cares about the job that he does for his customers. Period. New car, old car or rusted out telephone van. They all get top notch quality treatment. My voice in my head keeps saying, "what other shop would take this much quality steps to do this job?" I chuckle and then remember that this is why us devoted viewers watch every single video that Eric O puts out. Bar none the best mechanic on KZfaq!

Kenneth White agreed. In the shop im currently working at, just cause of Erics videos, makes me want to to the best i can on every car, above and beyond what most would expect. Its the little things you do that make the difference like giving new parts a few toots of kroil rust film. Or hitting a few common parts that may need replacing down the road with penetrating oil or rust film protection. Or greasing ball joints, tie rods, and other grease fittings during an oil change or service. And the brake hardware grease and anti seize/never seize on old rusty bolts that your putting back in. Things the customer doesn't see unless its filmed and shown or mentioned.

Living in the high desert, it's still amazing to see the literal HEAPING PILE of salt sitting on every flat surface underneath that van. Eric, you make it look so damn easy... Seriously... Thank you for the videos... You have a natural ability to simutaneously teach, and entertain. Even though I will probably never own a Chevy Express, I still watched this video from start to finish, and thought, "man... I can't wait to see what happens next".

A few tips for KZfaqr's. There are 2 piece dust shields so you dont have to pull axles. If you pull axles, after you push the axles in to drop the C clip retainers pull the axles out enough to slide the carrier pin back in . This will prevent the spiders and cone washers from slipping out of place. Next, you can use the inner end of the axle to pop out the axle seals. And last, I would swear that you have the wrong side caliper installed. The bleeder looks awfully low, and the bleeder always goes at the top. Many calipers will physically fit on either side, but when you go to bleed the brakes they wont bleed because with the bleeder at the bottom air is trapped in the caliper. I like that you use brake lube in all the right places. Last, a worn inner pad generally means stuck piston(s). A worn outer pad generally means a stuck caliper. Thanks for the video.

Here in the Frozen Wastelands of the Great White North (Northern Manitoba, Canada) one has to be careful with the emergency brakes - once you hit about -25 (c) or colder they tend to FREEZE in the ON position - this can be a really significant issue!

@Tiger F5-E Dunno - that seems a bit iffy to me. I also have a 2018 F-150 where it's a POWER e-brake and it I use it when it's too cold the electronics freak out, so it's kind of a no-win. I liked it a lot better when they didn't design trucks in California, when a vehicle could tolerate some cold.

I've got an old 03 4x4 S10 that's getting pretty rusty and been dumping some parts in it lately. Finally found a good shop and they made a new brake line for it and fixed up my rear brake problem. They also totally re finished the back half of my exhaust and did a great job on both! It really pays to find a good shop, even if they are a little pricey, it's worth it for people that can make old dogs smooth again.

So glad in Texas we don't have to deal with the corrosion problems you guys do. FYI, not using the parking brake, wears them out. You read that correctly, I've had to explain this to many confused customers. Here's the deal with that crappy design: When you set the parking brake, these uni-shoes recenter in the drum of the rotors, when they don't recenter & auto adjust, they slide down and drag against the drum = worn down brake shoes, and in Texas that means a failed state inspection for a parking brake that doesn't hold the vehicle. So this is one instance when you can actually tell the customer that NOT using a part DOES wear it out & watch their face when you do. lol Great videos SMA!

That's the difference between a professional automotive technician and a local yocal hack. Eric O is a solid tech with morals and a excellent work ethic. Btw I actually did the wrong caliper on the wrong side dance once when I was a younger lad. Embarrassed yes. End of the world not so much. Keep up the awesome content Mr O.

You can still buy loaded calipers online, I just did it for my 4 runner, caliper seized up like every 4 piston Toyota does and needed new pads and rotors and got it all in one go.
