For those who moan about auto shop bills, just look at how much hassle these guys have to go through to do regular routine jobs... stress that you would otherwise have to endure yourself while lying on your back in the wind, snow and rain, perched under your two ton car held up by a pair of $40 ramps... More importantly just look at how much specialist single function kit they have to buy in to have at their disposal from basic air sockets to induction heaters, 500 different sockets, wrenches, extensions, presses and other persuaders and remember above all that whatever it takes, these guys will have to finish the job they start no matter how much more involved or problematic the job becomes I have nothing but respect for people with skills and experience that I can just call upon as needed to sort my problems out whether its my car, plumbing, electrics or heating system. They earn their living

Hi Eric, from a mechanical fitter of 40 years experience, suggest you coat both inner and outer bearing races with oil during assembly. Makes assembly and later disassembly much easier. Dry assembly is just inviting metal pick up on shaft and hub. Safety glasses recommended....just some friendly suggestions.

JB weld saved me $600 buckaroo . Smoke tested my evap system found my charcoal canister had a crack. They is a place ,and a use for it like every tool

I still suggest that you wear safety glasses while working with impact as you know the thrust washer bearing on ur bearing tool broke apart on you first and then the inner bearing race broke apart and flew in pieces on you again. also the ear protection as well lol. Work safely. Thank you

Spent 2 yrs in Alfred, NY. Came from California with a 4 yr old truck no rust. After 2 yrs the bottom was just heavy rust every where.

Need to get a automated system , You know where it goes. Press 1 for appointments, press 2 for to leave a message, press 3 if you're a youtuber, Etc. It might weed out a lot of calls. We use Ring central.

Admire everything you do, I have been in the automotive repairs since I was 11 years old, I'm 47 now!! Jeralds Alignment and Brake service since 1978, may dad passed away in 2014 and we are still going like the energize BUNNY!!! Oh and I have the same snap on scissor lift in the other bay !!!😉

Hi Eric Great comment Rookie Mistake everybody makes them. I notice no eye protection when the bearing gave in. Not to be a pain in the A but it is so easy to put the goggles on before using Big Nasty or the other impact tools and a lifetime of lament if the unthinkable does happen because you did not put them on. Great gift for Mrs O??? (LOL) Keep the videos coming and have a great day.

Ahhh northern cars. Bang on axle to unseize and trailing arm falls apart in pieces on floor. I have a lot of respect for you dealing with rust daily. Toss out labor guide. Them smart fellas that wrote the times down only work on vehicles with new car smell.

frankly, i like these axle bearing videos the best...they remind me of gladiatorial combat....no diagrams no wires no fuses no foam filled dash panels....just hammer on metal and sword on shield....real simple....all 100% technique, skill and strength....no computers or chimes bonging....just hammer blows and jackhammers against the best rusted metal mother earth can offer... it occurred to me that some new kind of tool is needed to get these stuck axles out of the bearing....and only 1 tool remains still unused ....shotgun shells.....just like they used to start old radial aircraft engines with a shotgun shell charge so also you could rig up a chamber and apply it closely to the axle end and shoot it loose with a 12 ga. shot shell blank cartridge

Eric:. Now that you've got to the outer shell of the wheel bearing,use your arc welding machine and weld a bead on the inside of the shell. My boss and I use this trick all the time to remove the shell. I've seen guys struggle with getting the shell out lots of times. My boss explained to me that when you weld a bead on the inside of the shell,it actually shrinks the shell making it a lot easier to remove it. Just my two cents worth. Have a great day.

I hit the forcing screw when I change ball joint and it most certainly does help. Works with pitman arms too. Load up the tension and whack it. I agree with you.

Unfortunately, as a small shop trying to train someone costs you money, simply in lost time from work you are not doing whilst supervising them. It can take months before they break even. If you just put them on simple jobs, they are not really learning anything.

After you blow the bearing apart like happened there, just run a fat, hot bead of weld around both sides of the outer race, let it set and cool a minute, and it will just about fall out. Its actually my preferred method.

That's what happens when you're dealing with bushings and stuff. That have no lubidam from the factory. They stuffed them in dry and the rust of the corrosion seeps in and there you have it, it's not coming out. Good job, Eric. Thank you for the video.

Eric, Great video! Watching you Ive learned so much that I was able to replace the front wheel bearings on my rusty/crusty 02 Focus wagon 5-speed (Im 25 miles west of Boston). I wish I had access to all the tools you do but as a driveway mechanic that not practical. Do to the axles being seized to the hubs, the control arms being rotted out, and severly rusted knuckles, I ended up replacing the axles, (NAPA), control arms (NAPA), knuckles (good used), hubs, and bearings (SKF). I bought an Astro tools 'hub tamer' type kit (78825) which worked great with my 30 year old Craftsman impact wrench to install the new bearings in the knuckles. If it wasnt for you I could never have done this. I owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank you God bless Paul

What a job this was - WOW ... the factory should use anti-seize on all bolts, and rust prone vehicles should all be undercoated ... wouldn't that be nice ??? You certainly are methodical and inventive - not many mechanics are. Just hammer the crap out of it, customer isn't around !!! Very good work ethics as you do care about the customer, their cost of repairs and making their vehicle last a little longer - kudos to you on that !!!!!! Good quality work !!!!

Here in BC we avoid vehicles from back east, rolling rust. Mind you up here in the mountains we get a lot too,salt and sand do wonders for a vehicle.

Great videos. I really enjoyed watching them. Great insight into how things are for the mechanic. This is the stuff that kills the backyard mechanic and stalls the job completely. Thanks, the videos really keep your interest and move along nicely. There's a lot of things to learn, but also there is a philosophy on how to approach the task which is invaluable. Just an observation, It's probably a good idea to wear eye protection, especially when the bearing exploded. There seems to be a lot of potentially dangerous forces working with the air hammer pneumatic tools and pry bars. Working under such a dirty, rusty chassis would also create a lot of dust and debris which are eye irritants. I think for a lot of us, we don't normally associate certain tasks needing eye protection until something unforeseen happens. I wear regular glasses with polycarbonate lenses and take chances because they do provide marginal protection. It's better than nothing but only for light duty work. Also, I usually don't wear ear protection when using my air tools, but I am a very casual user. However, in an industrial or work environment, It might be worth the effort since the duration of the noise is much greater and will eventually take its toll on the hearing. My father worked for many years in the Phila. Navy yard and suffered significant hearing loss from using air tools.

Hey Eric. That's a wild, crazy, idea. When you get old and gray, decades from now that is (of course. :D ) and you retire and turn your shop over to one of your kids, you could keep busy by opening an advice line / chat room. :D

they do the same thing with people like louis rossmann. any youtuber who owns a shop seems to get the same thing. its shitty that people think its ok to do. but its also common (for some reason)
