As a traditional wushu practitioner I say. When someone understand shuai jiao and incorporate it with striking someone can become a beast. Taiji was once the perfect system to mix both. Nowadays a lot has been lost, but with little adaptations shuai jiao is simply super brutal and efficient.

As a Shuai Jiao practitioner I appreciate you highlighting us. I have 40 years in. It was the perfect addition to my FMA and dumog. IDK if being ambidextrous was a factor for but I've always been combat oriented rather than sports fighting. Before I left Chicago we had open training with various throwing arts. Still not a fan or impressed with BJJ because they didn't do well at those open training sessions. Lots of jujitsu but even they didn't like BJJ. Those were the good ol days

I do both Judo & Wrestling. To me the leverage with a jacket is different than without. When I rolled with Marines, I effectively grabbed their BDUs similar to the way you'd grab a Sambo Jacket; but it looks to me like the Shuai Jaio grabs might be the most practical for Self Defense.

@dannyharris9897
@dannyharris9897 5 ай бұрын
I don't know that it is actually better; but I use different strategies for Wrestling & Judo, I am speculating that perhaps with Shuai Jaio I could go to a more focused approach to any situation. I spend most of my fun time doing grappling type activities; but if I was satisfied with cutting to one of those, I could spend more time with striking activities. My main problem is that I don't want what I know in wrestling to get lost (there's lots of uniqueness there) so I coach and then I have life long commitments to my students. Then as my granddaughters are younger, I have them in Judo and I'm starting to develop similar relationships with the students there. Thus, I neglect my own personal self defense training and development. In my 60's now I'm reevaluating my priorities, but I have a lot of people counting on my continued support and that matters.

Shuai Jiao throws are similar to the old throws that karate has, which makes sense with how much Chinese martial arts influenced Okinawan karate. Most don't realize that the foundation of karate is not kung fu, but rather tegumi, which is the native Okinawan style of stand up grappling. Today, tegumi looks more like a belt wrestling style while wearing a gi, but originally it was done no-gi.

@@inside_fighting In terms of the strides being made with returning karate to it's grappling origins, look up channels for people like Iain Abernethy and Les Bubka, and also Karate Breakdown. Once one realizes that all the funky movements in kata are grappling movements because karate is designed for clinch range stand up grappling, rather than the BS idea that you are fighting eight people in eight directions, the grappling applications become more obvious.

Another reason I was lucky to be born in Ohio: one of the first Shuai Jiao instructors in the USA was Dr. Daniel Weng, who taught in the Phys Ed dept at Ohio State University. As a result although it wasn’t common in Ohio, you could find it from the early 80’s onward. I was a kid with no car so I couldn’t travel to train it, but you’d see a shuai jiao division in the Kung fu tournaments in the Cleveland area and it was great to watch. You’d see guys that had traveled from NY, CA, or TX, so it was a big deal.

Shuai Jiao - more specifically, Shou Bo, tournaments - had seamless striking and grappling transition flow in competitions before UFC 1. There are videos here on KZfaq from France that shows some of their practices back in the 80s. The modern Sport Shuai Jiao doesn’t allow striking, and Shou Bo has probably been swallowed up by San Da / Sanshou. But I think some of the European countries still have Shou Bo competitions. It’s a great art. A complete art that gives much needed context back to A LOT of KungFu styles, movements, forms, postures, etc. Especially the popular ones like Tai Chi, Praying Mantis, Long Fist, Hung Ga. Tai Chi is really like an entire system dedicated to the study of countering standup grappling. One thing that makes it unique is the “wheeling.” The constant spinning and interrupting is nuts. Feels like trying to hold onto a tornado. It’s very unique to “kuzushi.” The Mongolians also have a dance that spins and moves the hands in a way that applies to wrestling. We trained out of a Gracie academy, and the BJJ and Judo guys were pretty familiar with some of the throws, but, the wheeling, knee blocking, and leg shaving throws they had never seen. It’s definitely not just “Chinese Judo.” And, of course, there’s the Xing Yi / Sumo-like palm strikes, the knees, elbows, leg kicks, etc. Chinese Groundboxing is pretty wild too lol. It’s the first place I ever saw something that looked like - what they today call - an Imanari Roll.

I was at a seminar led by Grandmaster Ch'ang Tung-sheng at The University of Ohio in Columbus, in the early 1980s a few years before his death around 1986. He was soft spoken, short, but built like a fireplug. I think he may have been a main Grandmaster for modern Shuai Jiao and for teaching the military. He did create a "Shuai Jiao" - based Ch'ang style [derived from Yang style, and not Chen style] Long Style Tai Chi, with only a few differences in some forms to lead to throws. His throws [with high level students] were explosive and potentially violent [pulled at the last moment]. And, he showed us some 'illegal' moves taught only to the military at the time, such as one meant to crack the back of the skull [and could not be rolled out of], and one meant to land on the face to break the neck. He discussed Judo and the common history from Chinese Wrestling. Excellent teacher, knowledgeable and patient. I think there are KZfaq videos of some of his presentations. Very sad to see him go. After I left Ohio, I did not keep up with Daniel Wang [1st generation student?] or Matt Mollica [2nd generation?].

I wish I had the opportunity to see Chang Tung-sheng. Daniel Weng started the USSA (United States Shuai Chiao Association) and lives in the San Francisco Bay area. I trained under a student of his, called Rocky Byars. Once he came to Rocky Byars' school and gave a demonstration. Then I moved to the Atlanta area where I trained under Chang's student David (Chi Kai) Lin. Master David Lin had his own organization called ACSCA (American Combat Shuai Chiao Association). I think there were 3 others in that organization (Brian Wu, John Wang, and Victor Ke). Unfortunately, David Lin died a few years ago. His son, Master James Lin, is still involved with it in the LA/Long Beach area. I sparred with James quite a bit, and I could never throw him. There are websites for both USSA and ACSCA.

@@RoguePhysicist I appreciate the follow-up history. I didn't realize Daniel had moved to California. I trained [Tai Chi] with him, while he was still going for his doctorate. At the time, Push hands was much more cooperative, but with finesse, than it is today, and we did play a lot more, than the seriousness in today's competitions. As you know, Daniel was a small man, but an excellent fighter. Fortunately, for us irreverent young turks, when we used strength, or broke rules ;-) , Daniel was fast enough to threaten an offensive throw, defensively as a 'warning', rather than throw us on our butts, decisively. ... I learned a lot from him... and the lessons were not painful. ;-)

I remember reading an article about Shuai Jiao in the 80's and the founder said they focus heavy on driving the opponent straight down into the ground vs a more circular approach you could maybe roll out of . Because of this they would train on sand and they didn't do breakfalls because they wouldn't help anyhow. That stuck with me all this time . He said the object was to break as many bones as you could. Sorry if Matt brings this up in interview but I have to finish it later .

Interesting what you were saying about height and size around 30:00 It definitely seems that in martial arts and combat sports in general there is a surplus of advice for fighting taller opponents and a vacuum of information on fighting shorter opponents. Part of what is often ignored is that the shorter fighter has adantages of their own and also is often stronger if weight classes are a factor.

It did SJ a few decades ago -it was mostly Baoding with Mongolian wrestling- and came from a Judo and wrestling background. While it does have some cool techniques and it fun to watch and train, I didn't have any problems beating all of them with freestyle wrestling (and a bit of Greco-Roman) and a few years of competitive Judo. And this was before the BJJ/MMA revolution where cross training became the norm. This is also why American wrestler Matt F. went to China and easily won the SJ world championships. But if I was going to do any Kung Fu style it would probably would've been SJ, fun to do! The ones I saw that were good at it were practitioners who had done other grappling styles.. Purists stand little chance, just my 2 cents.

The real kung fu is in Taiwan . The wushu is in China and Hong Kong has a mixture

I've noticed this, the Taiwanese guys seem much more realistic. The history here is that many masters fled to Taiwan during the revolution along with the Guo Ming Tan. Many of the ones who stayed in China were systematically eliminated by Mao or driven underground. Much of Kung Fun in China is a reconstruction effort which lacks the nuances that can only be transmitted in person over time. Some village styles still have it but they aren't the "official" lineages. The ones I've met just thought of it as something obscure they did back home and were humble about showing it.

Taiwan have more traditional, china have more modern. But both are Wushu. Kungfu is a philosophy. Taiwan have a lot of traditional masters. Is a hotspot for someone who likes it

The remark of the 5ft1 man throwing 200lb dudes reminds me of late grandmother. She was a 4ft11 Japanese woman who practiced almost her entire life, well into her 80s and passed away at 96. She had no problem in her 60s tossing my loudmouth teenage ass to ground at will. Sometimes for a laugh, sometimes because I really pissed her off. I could tell by how hard I landed which one it was 😂 I remember being 5 or 6 years old and having the neighborhood bully brothers push me off my bike and steel it. They lived about 5 homes down from her so we walked over to get my bike back. Their dad comes out and starts yelling at her, spouting Jap this and yellow that, as soon as he put his finger in her face she had a limb and he hit the driveway very hard. I got my bike back, and gained a new respect for my grandmother who I had always thought of as this small Asian lady.

Hong Kong has more southern styles. Taiwan has more northern styles. But I think the ones who retained real combat effectiveness are the Chinese diaspora in Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillipines, etc.

@@B..B. Wushu is indeed the original name, but nowadays it's understood as the athletic composition style promoted by the Chinese government. While kung-fu Is a concept that would include the abilities of any professional musician for example, nowadays it's become the synonymous with what should be called Wushu

the Army using BJJ as a "combat hand to hand" art is STUPID. They would have been better served to either stay with defendu or do shuai chiao

BJJ is NOT good on the streets. If you do shuai chiao and throw someone as soon as they get close enough, they will NOT want to continue fighting, as they will be injured. No reason to lay on the ground and roll Round. Self Defense is NOT the UFC.

"Shuai Jiao" was pretty much lost after the 16th century and didn't "reappear" until after China sent an envoy to Japan to study Judo. So you can guess...despite what the Nationalist and Sinophiles would have you beleive what Shuai Jiao is really based off of. It is basically a Chinese rip of Judo and a rather poor one at that.

It’s quite different than judo in my experience and I’ve seen ancient manuscripts and documents showing many of the movements in shuai jiao that don’t exist in judo… also judo didn’t exist until the 1900s 🤔🤔 so do you mean jujutsu?
@catocall7323
@catocall7323 8 ай бұрын
I'd say it's probably closer to Mongolian wrestling which is still a popular sport in Mongolian. Shua Jiao is associated with the Manchus which are closer to Mongolians. That's also why it's found more around Beijing.
