I finally got to watch this video. Great review. A little over a year ago, I bought a Rok grinder with my Expobar Office Control from you guys. A local coffee shop friend of mine let me borrow his Mazzer Lux D for the past year, but I need to return it to him. He threw me a price, but I thought I might buy a new one. So I am in need of a grinder, so many choices.. I don't know what to buy, but his helped.

Hi Marty, Thanks for the comment! Wish we still had Expobar Office machines. They were the best bang for the buck! With a recent acquisition Expobar (Crem) has decided to only do NSF rated machines for US market. There are so many choice in grinders. If you can handle a grinder that's a little louder and don't want to commit to prosumer level $$ at this point the Sette 270 or 270 Wi are as good as it gets in high-end appliance grade. Beyond that in machine grade 63mm Ceado E5P or E6P offer best bang for buck IMO. Marc

For those of you seeking a grind for ‘regular’ coffee and for espresso, I suggest that you try to find a used Bunn grinder. Lots of workplaces changing over to coffee dispensers with built-in grinders, and those Bunn grinders are often just finding their way to the trash heap or whatever. I got lucky, and scored mine for $50. Dual bin. Does a great job for my morning pot of coffee, as it does for lots of baristas. Frees up your $$$ for an espresso-specific grinder, meaning you don’t have to try to change grinds to accommodate a variety of brew methods.

Thanks for your very informative videos. As I have progressively refined my technique, I have continued to be surprised at the importance of apparently fussy little details. I have an old stepped grinder... and it turns out that one step is too coarse resulting in much too fast flow, while next step is fine which clogs the portafilter. It might be interesting if you illustrated that problem so that we slow learners would understand... lol. Thanks again for your videos.

Hi Ardy, You are welcome and thanks for the comment and request. I have dealt with that issue in some other videos over the years. If in that situation you can fudge it a bit by adjusting the dose weight of coffee. So things coming a little too fast up the dose weight a bit. A bit slow then decrease dose. In addition, one could try a harder or softer tamp. Marc

In Europe, the price of a Sette 270 (the W, not the Wi) and the Mignon Specialita are practically the same (I like the look of the Mignon more, tbh). Do you prefer one over the other? What a great walk through a wide range of grinders this was! I am looking to upgrade my grinder (Ascaso i1 54mm flat burr, 25o watt motor). I am considering very different options: Ceado E5P or something twice as expensive such as the Eureka Atom 75. What draws me to the Eureka is the large burr size (and presumably superb grind consistency and quality), but it comes with a lot of extra features that I don't care for, such as speed, quietness, programmability ect. My question is, is something like the Eureka worth the extra money over the Ceado on grinding capability alone and is the Ceado enough of an upgrade over what I already have? Thank you in advance.
@Wholelattelovepage

Hi DV, You will see a difference with the Ceado grinder with the larger burrs, better motor and nice distribution into PF. The E5P is the best value for those who want a simple on demand grinder with no need for additional features like timed grinding etc. and it's relatively quiet too. Marc

Hi, I've happened to pick up a used Gaggia MD64 aka "Bella" grinder (64 mm burrs, stepless, doser only, 20 inch in height, a true monster :-D ) to use with a 57,5 mm bottomless PF (Italian FrancisFrancis X3 machine, IMS shower screen) in my kitchen. The ginormous thing cost me less than $100. I've noticed that the spout between the burrs and the doser is almost horizontal. I guess it's designed to run non-stop, then the coffee would pass faster. Not so convenient for my smaller doses. On the other hand, it has quite a solid build quality and the vital moving parts are metallic. And the grinding potential is so good of course. :-) Bottom line: Do you think I should give this one a chance at home or should I sell it to some local business owners (as their backup grinder or something)? Thanks!

On the Sette 270Wi as you can see when you grind the micrometric adjustment moves ! I have exactly the same problem on mine and i have the older version 270W . This is because of the bad cheap construction on plastic ! There is a lot of vibration on that grinder and screws on plastic become very loose. Also Rocket faustino i bought one to replace my Sette 270w and i run through new problems :-) . As build quality i haven't seen anything better. That very small unit i think is 7.4KG . The problems i had from first day was at the touch screen, then supplier send me another screen and replace it myself by taking off those two screws. Second screen problem again with the memory of the seconds and the touch general. So now i am on the way to return the unit back and get something else, as i believe the first batch from these units was faulty. There is very very limited reviews online for these grinders. All that happens in Australia btw :-)

Hi nr, Thanks for sharing your experience. There is a felt friction ring between the macro and micro-adjustment rings of the Sette 270 and 270Wi. It is a wear part and after long-term use of the grinder it will need replacement. The part is $1.00 and available here: www.baratza.com/shop/parts/sette-parts Very easy to replace. Sorry to hear you've had issues with your Faustino. I have not experienced anything like that and have used a number of Faustino grinders. Build quality of Faustino is much higher! I consider the Sette a high-end appliance grade while the Faustino is a true machine. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage thanks for letting me know Marc i didn't know that. Now the sette relaxing on the shelf as a spare grinder. Yes build quality those 2 grinder are day and night. Faustino is solid like a tank but unfortunately yes... First screen i wasn't able to use any button until it goes on stand by mode, after that was ok . Second screen on a single dose i couldn't add seconds, i was able only to take off seconds, and go only up to 9.9 secs. And once you hit the single shot button it starts counting from 50 seconds. So yes i think they released few batches with faulty screens.

Hi YS, Well, I'm not a fan of Mazzer grinders. The Mini hasn't changed much in the last decade. The grinding chamber which is open to the threads of the burr adjustment drives me nuts. Threads get gummed up and adjustment becomes difficult. Dislike the top burr riding on 3 springs (also open to ground coffee). If stuck on Mazzer I don't think you'll see much difference in grind quality between the two. Hi Marc. Thanks for all the great videos! have watched a lot of videos on prosumer espresso machines and grinders but I am not sure which grinder should I go for. So hope to hear your advice. The tricky part is that I am very likely to get Rocket R58 for the espresso machine, because it can give the most stable temperature and pressure within my budget. But I am not sure whether I need to a machine grade grinder. My requirements for the espresso grinder is: no clumpy grinds, fluffy and evenly distributed grinds, less retained grind in the machine (e.g. 18g in, 18g out). I drink one cup of coffee every day or every other day, so I scale the beans every time I grind. so the grinds does not need to have a scale, nor does it need to have a big bin for continuous output. I do not care about the noise at all. Based on the research I have done, seems Sette 270 is a good choice. But I am wondering are there smaller and less expensive choices that could fulfill my requirements? On the other side, I am also wondering whether Sette 270 is a short board for the espresso given the machine is R58? If you do recommend a pricier grind, how the output will be different from Sette 270? If there is a strong reason, I may reconsider my budgets for the grinder. Thanks so much!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi PP, You are welcome! Thanks for the question and including details which will help with my recommendations. The Sette 270 is a reasonable choice. It does a very fluffy and well distributed grind and has low retention. It's fast and noisier than most. It is a high-end appliance grade grinder and uses a conical burr set. At your use level appliance grade is reasonable but others using higher end machines like the R58 tend to prefer grinders with larger flat burrs. Those put you into a machine grade grinder with higher price. Worth a look are the Ceado E5P and the Rocket Faustino. If you want 18g in/18g out the Ceado E5SD is essentially zero retention but it's significantly more $$. Conical vs. flat burr: IMO flat burrs produce a more consistent grind particle size leading to more balanced extraction. But that's very subjective! This video takes you through the Ceado E5's kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJN2odhot5ychJc.html The Rocket Faustino is a beautiful little grinder that stays with your brand. Here's a video on that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8h4dMyHrdjRlH0.html In case you did not know the R58 saw a recent update to the R Cinquantotto: www.wholelattelove.com/products/rocket-espresso-r-cinquantotto-espresso-machine Hope that helps! Great video thanks for doing that. I recently sold my 270wi due to noise. I'm currently looking for a single dose grinder because my wife switched to decaf. I've been leaning towards the Eureka Mignon Specialita for cost, performance and retention. I would love something like the E5SD but it's a little out of my price range. Is there anything else you would recommend for single dosing? Also have you tested the Eureka Mignon XL?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle, You are welcome for the video! The Sette 270Wi is an excellent home espresso grinder but the grind straight through design does make it louder than most. The E5SD is a fantastic single doser but is rather pricey. Sorry I do not have a lower cost single dosing solution to suggest. Always a bit of a compromise trying to single dose with a grinder that's not designed to do it. For perfect fresh doses in a non SD grinder you will need to purge between grind cycles and do motor start/stop to coax out the last bit of grind but there will always be some retention. If single dosing you might consider the regular Ceado E5P. No timed grinding but you don't really need that if single dosing. With the push to grind button it's maybe easier to bump the motor on/off. Gotta like the larger 64mm burrs and excellent distribution into PF. You will still need to purge for 100% fresh dose. IMO the Ceado does less popcorning of beans in hopper than most Eureka grinders. I have not tested the XL. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi Acorn, So ten years ago the Rocky was a reasonable choice for home use. Since then it has been passed by newer designs with more precise control of grind size and other usability features. I have never been a fan of dosing grinders. They're a holdover from the days of commodity espresso in Italy where speed and eliminating coffee waste was (still is) important. Hi mark, Thanks for the question. Well, I'm not a fan of dosing grinders. Unless in coffee shop I can't recommend. Very few sold for home use anymore. The Mazzer Mini is a decent grinder. I don't care much for the burr sitting on the 3 springs or how open the grind size adjustment threads are to coffee dust and oils. When I've used in the past they get gummed up with coffee dust and oils and become very difficult to adjust. If you upgrade you could have things doser-less grinding, ease of use and timed or weight based grinding. Great informational video, thank you... so pretty much since coffee changes everyday and you're always going to be dialing in, seems like a lot of coffee needs to be wasted before drinking a cup of coffee, pull one shot it's either sour or bitter then you have to throw it away and make another coffee before you can enjoy a cup?
@Wholelattelovepage

Hey Y, You're welcome and thanks for the kind comment. Once dialed in day to day changes should be minor enough that you don't need to toss shots but just make a slight adjustment for the next one. Changes are more likely in the first 4 weeks from roast. After a coffee has done the majority of off-gassing, so long as the coffee is stored well, adjustments to grind are very slight to not needed at all. Marc

Hi Joe, Thanks for the kind comment. I'd have a look at the Bezzera BB005: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bezzera-bb005-automatic-grinder It's a good match for your Hobby and probably the best value in a machine grade grinder. It's no frills but far better grind and build quality than appliance grade entry-level espresso grinders. Out of stock at the moment as we quickly sold out of last shipment. But, expect more available in a week or so. Hope that helps! Marc

Marc, what are your thoughts on the Mahlkonig E65s? A huge improvement on the Mahlkonig K30 and comparison with top Ceado's?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi g, Thanks for the question. So the E65s is a fan cooled 65mm flat burr grinder. A quick price check shows it running about $500 more than the Ceado E37S which is an 83mm flat burr grinder. I prefer the larger burrs of the Ceado - and the lower price. Also like the E37S incredibly precise Quick Set Gear for grind size adjustment. The NSF rated E37S is appropriate for high-end home use up through moderate use in a commercial cafe. The E65S with fan cooling could be a better choice for high-volume commercial use but otherwise I'd go with the larger burrs and low retention of the Ceado. Hope that helps! Marc

Hey Marc, I have the Baratza Satte 270 and was wondering is it okay to leave the beans in the grinder container? Or should I just aim to pour into the container what I’m planning to use for each time I use my machine? 🤔 thanks in advance!

Hi J, Thanks for the question. Depends on how particular you are and type/age of beans. If using say an Italian style bean blend I'm okay with a couple days in the hopper. If doing specialty coffee that's within a couple weeks of roast I'd only put in what you are using for a day and leave the rest in the original bag. Roll the bag and use a clip to keep it closed. Hi Andreas, Thanks for the question. I'd go with the Sette 30. It's not optimal without the micro-adjustment but IMO far better than the SGP. If you wanted, down the road you can upgrade the 30 with the adjustment mechanism of the 270 to get the micro-adjust for ~$90 www.baratza.com/shop/sette-270-270w-adjustment-assembly Hope that helps! @Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Thanks for the question. The E37S is an extra high-end espresso focused grinder. I like the 270Wi a lot - the weighing is magical. But, it is an appliance grade product with parts that wear with time. At some point if you have not already you will be inserting the burr shims (very easy to do) after break in. Later you'll likely need to replace the friction felt between the macro and micro adjustment rings. That's super easy as well and the part is ~$1. Major difference in the burrs. E37S are massive 83mm flats while the Sette's are 40mm conical. Most espresso pros prefer flat burrs. For the espresso novice there might not be a huge noticeable difference in flavor between burr types. The Sette is susceptible to static when grinding and it's virtually unheard of with the E37S. But, you could purchase ~3 270 Wi's for the price of one E37S. Even with that the single Ceado is likely to outlast them all. It's just a whole other level of build quality. Marc

Hi Marc how does one go about matching a grinder to a machine. Is it price? Burr size? Is a grinder that has 50mm burrs sufficient for pretty much any machine i.e. taste wise?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi w, It used to be a price based decision to some extent. Old advice was to spend at least 50% of machine cost on grinder. I don't really subscribe to that advice. I think it's best to determine the build quality you want first. There are some excellent high-end appliance grade grinders for espresso like the Baratza Sette 270 or 270 Wi. They are strictly for home use. They are built well but will not standup to abuse! Also happen to be rather loud. But if you can put up with that, they produce excellent clump free perfectly distributed grinds with very low retention. They can produce some static in dry environments but easily solved with a little wetting (RDT) of the beans. If you prefer a machine grade grinder that'll go for decades you will spend more. Entry level into that grade IMO is the Ceado E5P/E6P. They are the same grinder except timing function on the E6P. They have 63mm burrs, clump free grinding, excellent distribution and are much quieter than the Sette grinders. As you go below 63mm in prosumer level machine grade grinders you get slower grinding and more possibilty of clumping. I do like Eureka grinders at that level as well as the Rocket Espresso Faustino (beautiful IMO) which is manufactured by Eureka. Hope that helps! Marc

TL;DR = No :) IMO, unless you are very picky and a coffee enthousiast, there's no reason to jump from 200-250$ to a 500+ grinder. Coffee quality, machine, dialed espresso, water temps. There's so much that matter into an espresso. If you get CONSISTENT grind size and good grinding SIZE with your grinder, stick with it until it die. Then switch up for better. But don't change it if the Breville still works good and do good. Cheers!

Hi Andy, Thanks for the question. I don't think, I know it will make a huge difference! It's louder but so much faster with far better control of grind size. If your are using precision baskets then you will appreciate getting the same weight every time you grind. I guarantee you after a few cycles of "intelligent" learning the 270 Wi is always within 0.2g dosing accuracy. It's magical! While the SGP is doable for some, your machine totally outclasses it. Marc

Hi naomi, That's unusual unless you are grinding extra fine or using dark oily beans. It may be you have a partial obstruction of the exit of the grinding chamber due to a coffee grounds clog or the static control flap may be miss-adjusted. You can check for and correct both of these by removing four phillips head screws holding on the black piece which the grounds chute exits through. The static control flap is a thin piece of metal at the exit of the grounds chamber into the silver tube. Clear any accumulated coffee from around or behind the flap. Bending the flap out away from the grinding chamber can help with coffee flow but don't bend too much. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi TMP, Thanks for the question. It is possible to use for unpressurized basket but not highly recommended. It lacks the precise control of grind size one gets with the micro-adjustment on the 270 or 270 Wi. But, you can work around that by slightly up/down dosing the coffee weight if you find yourself wanting to go in between grind sizes on the 30. @Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sal, Thanks for the comment and questions! Grinders used in super automatics are relatively similar. Most use flat ceramic burrs of ~40mm Brew groups are similar in function. There is some difference in dosing amounts. All are adjustable using coffee strength. Jura machines tend have higher dosing but use a single grind cycle when making 2 coffee beverages. Gaggia machines use 2 grind cycles when making 2 coffee beverages. If you go to the "specs" section on the product page of most machines you will find the coffee dose range. The Gaggia Cadorna for instance uses a dose of 6.5 - 11.5 grams per grind cycle so make a double espresso and you'll get a dose range of 13 - 23 grams. Check out the specs here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-cadorna-prestige#product-specs Make a double on a Jura machine and it's a single grind cycle with most of their machines maxing out at 14 grams. Another difference... brew groups are removable in Gaggia machines and not removable in Jura machines. Differences in super-auto machines are largely based on features. Things like how milk is supplied, capacities, user interface. some machines can flip the milk/espresso prep order based on the drink being made. Some users prefer semi-auto machines with programmable volumetric dispensing. Even with those you can go manual. Personally I prefer manual start/stop. It's a simpler and more pure process IMO. I also like features like line pressure pre-infusion and flow control available on many non volumetric E61 group machines. Hope that helps! Marc

Seems like such a waste of coffee dialing in / adjusting the grind. I always just single dose, nothing in the hopper, so I can adjust the grinder while it's running and no beans being wasted, pull a shot and see how it worked. I don't care if it's really off, I'll still drink it, sometimes you get surprised it can still be really good.

So i didn't count how many times was said how to deal with static and he never explained that in the video.... that's the biggest problem with most grinders he showed they make a mess on your counter...
@Wholelattelovepage

Hi TV, Sorry about that... The simple way to deal with static is to get the beans slightly moist just prior to grinding. This can be done using a fine mist sprayer or simply dip a finger in water and stir beans in the hopper with that wet finger prior to grinding. This technique is often called RDT for Ross Droplet Technique. Some grinders produce more static than others and static can be more troublesome in low humidity environments. Hope that helps! Marc

Go by taste when dialing in and dont worry about time or weight. Just drink good tasting coffee. And stop looking at the lint collection in your belly button.

Who cares about time of grind in a home grinder, when you almost always weigh the beans first. I only weigh the beans before even putting into the grinder.
