Chris Packham was recently on Good Morning Britain to plead his case for threatening Natural England with legal action over the general license. He blocked BASC from attending and comments are disabled on KZfaq. Here is my response ...

Great video mate, plenty of true words said. It will get sorted out and back to normal soon. Paul king, very good point. Cats and the damage they do is always overlooked as they're seen as "pets", it never made sense to me that cat owners can freely let their cats out all day everyday, yet introducing a non native predator into any ecosystem is an offence, its no different IMO. Feral cats are a huge problem accross the UK, and are responsible for several species declines

I watched this a while ago (really good video btw). If we agree the new GLC’s are useless and don’t cover all species anyway, then I wondered what our position might be on individual licenses before we have land owner permission. I’m only getting into shooting and was about to embark on a campaign to get some permission. I live in a rural area and have a farm at the end of the road inundated with corvids. It seems a bit strange asking for land owner permission to shoot them and then applying for an individual license which may or may not be granted? On the application if I state where I intend to shoot I wonder if NE will check it out and if I say I don’t have permission will that be an automatic declined license. Also - I’ve read the NE documentation and I can’t work out if the license is for a single person/permission or if I got new permissions would the same license still be valid? Sorry- Lots of questions, I’d appreciate your views

A television debate is unlikely to be effective in my view. Television as a medium is interested in drama and conflict. Facts and evidence based decision making are irrelevant on telly. What you are doing on KZfaq is more effective in my view. Some of the facts are that the UK is nowhere near self sufficient in food. If farmers can’t control pests, then the current level of production will decline. This increases the UK’s food insecurity. This risks price increases that hits poorer people the hardest. Is that a desirable outcome? Keep up the videos. I also agree that threats and verbal abuse directed at an opponent are ineffective. It’s best to rise above it and stick to facts and sound arguments.

Why do we need a general license system anyway? And I have heard people using the artificial ecosystem before for he killing of birds of prey. (I have heard farmers and gamekeepers say how they have Wiped out a lot of game birds and such and can’t do anything about them.) Do you have an opinion on that ? It’s just one of those things, we’re do you stop and draw the line.
@srspower
@srspower 5 жыл бұрын
Well certain species vary over the decades as to what is appropriate. For instance Starling used to be a hugely over populated pest species and I'd shoot hundreds of them as a boy. In around 2007 shooting them was banned, because their population had declined, which i approve of as they no longer needed controlling. I would say that we definitely have too many buzzards right now and I would support putting them on a controlled general license albeit with a bag limit initially. However species like Corvid or Woodpigeon are unlikely to ever decline to the point that we should stop shooting them. But if they do? I'd support that.
@kylethedalek
@kylethedalek 5 жыл бұрын
srspower I don’t think we actually a licensing system it just another way to control and make money. Common sense seems a better approach for this situation. And yeah, I believe Scotland actually has more breeding pairs of buzzards than the the rest of the U.K. has single buzzards. What about other birds of prey which are causing damage on grouse estates? People say everything balances its self out, but they animals don’t have a predator. And they might not take much, but when the population goes up they will. Appreciate the reply btw!

In and around my control area West Wales, the biggest and most effective maimer of lambs are ravens. Their beaks contain cutting edges, that can cut out a lambs tongue in one hit, that lamb then cannot suckle. They also take out eyes when the ewe is birthing. This has to be seen to be believed. The raven will not allow any approach by humans, but can succumb to long range rifle.

Ex-pigeon shooter here, left UK 22 years ago to live in Australia. Watching your videos and talking about this radical Chris and his idiotic ideas I do believe your talking a lot of sense. I just wondering how many of the city slickers who only hear Chris’s point of view don’t hear the reality of how cruel nature is. It’s only seen by people that are out in the fields and woods. It’s so easy for people like Chris to get more support because he’s preaching to people who don’t know any different to what he tells them. Plus he has the advantage of showing his smug face on the BBC. I just believe that someone like yours self on KZfaq and I’m guessing there’s others on KZfaq like you only get heard by other KZfaqrs. I think you need to get yourself on TV and talk your talk to the hole country and wake up the public to reality of the country side and what’s going on. I’m not in the UK to see/hear the fight for the farmers and shooter side to this cock up but all I’m seeing is Chris celebrity being about to keep pushing his own point of view. As usual week pathetic government roll over to a known celebrity. Farmers and shooters need to get more into the public view and fight back showing and explaining the real fax on this situation. I just want to say there’s only one thing I miss about the UK is the pigeon shooting. I shoot here in Australia controlling pest, pest like your normal rabbits, foxes which came from the UK but also there’s pest like feral cats, wild pigs, feral camels, feral donkeys, water buffalo and others but with all that my favourite is and always will be is the wood pigeon. Get heard and save the sport of pest control or say good bye to your firearms. If you can’t shoot then they will say you don’t need the guns. They will take them away next!

Great video. I totally agree with the comments regarding victimisation. While I in no way condone the actions against Mr Packham, he is exploiting it and lapping it up. Makes me nauseous

What eats corvids? what happened to all the birds of prey that control the birds on this list, was it landowners killing birds of prey that then led to things being out of wack. Farmers should start keeping hawks or falcons and hunt them that way all year round, doubt that people would moan about that.

It's general licence (ce), not 'license' (se). Licence is the noun, whereas 'license' is the verb only, unless you're American. You license (verb) someone by issuing them a licence (noun), hence 'general licence' ‒ noun. Please use and preserve our English language and avoid adopting unnecessary Americanisms. xx

Chris. You have made enemies of a lot of people by your lack of understanding. Come out and see why it's done, speak to farmers. Controlling Corvids and Wood Pigeons are a must. An open licence is required. It's that simple. Leave it to the people that understand..

The trouble with these so called wild life experts most of them ain’t got a clue about how nature works, they protected the badger for years then they are wondering why the hedgehogs are vanishing it’s because the badger looks at them as a walking McDonald meal just strolling across the field so then the will kill and eat the hedgehogs and I understand that’s not only the cause of the decline in them, as for the pest species of birds they also need to be controlled as they kill the song birds and also lambs or just cause so much damage the lamb is suffering until the farmer can deal with them... I also heard Chris in one interview saying that hawks kill song birds so should we start culling the hawks, but as we all understand hawks are in pairs and are few are far between but as for corvids they are in flocks most times and will cause tremendous amount of damage to the smaller species of birds so this is telling me that Chris do not understand nature... I have had loads of trouble with the carrions smashing my duck eggs and playing hell with my ducks so I do shoot them, also it’s beyond why he wants the shooting of wood pigeons as the destroy crops and I hope the farmers put in compensation for their losses and for the work they putting into growing them, I wonder is the feral pigeon comes under this ban as all pigeons looks feral

Packham has a very narrow view and no joined up thinking. He needs to feel important and it does not matter what damage he does in that aim. No apology for the suffering he caused by the general licence cock up.

I shoot all year round. Mainly rats. But I also shot both fox and vixen after they took a lamb. I shoot crows and other pest birds too. Crows and magpies peck out lambs eyes alive so I enjoy ridding the farm off these horrible creatures.. Even if he got a ban on any of them I'd still shoot them cos I tell you now that the farmer won't tell on me haha.

I’ve seen zero evidence of corvid type birds attacking any farm animal. I’m a wildlife ranger who lives on farmland. My uncle owns a vast farm too. I’ve seen hundreds of jackdaws and crows and none are interested in healthy sheep or songbirds. They’ve nested side by side with no issue. This is over 40 years experience of rehab of every mammal and bird in the UK. I’ve witnessed and observed every single thing

Pimple head packham has a new book coming out , he’s been on extinction rebellion march, he’s gone vegan on social media and now that’s a lot of free publicity, he plays on his Asperger (difficulty’s in social interaction ) is a form of autism, when you think about taking your own life because your pet fish died ,that’s nothing to do with his Aspergers , that is a real sick mental disorder that should be addressed , he was bullied in school and now sees the bullies as shooters and is cowardly taking it out on them , he’s also a attention seeker to make himself feel good because of his low self esteem, basically the spoilt child that has never grow up, and can’t have his own way , why are government authorities being dictated too by people like him, probably because it’s takes the heat of real issues of the day and what all farmers should do is to sew packhams wild justice and natural England for loss of revenue

The song birds don’t stand a chance, they get it from all angles, property developers, birds of prey, corvids and modern gardens that aren’t bird friendly. If the song birds go then we’re all in trouble. This mess needs sorting out and I need to be able to blast the feathers of corvids and pigeons again.
