Been living out here in the Washington wilderness, and starting to question what comes next. Choosing a state to live in and buying land feels like a big, scary commitment. Extended international travel is still up in the air. And leaving the road? That feels like the scariest thing of all. Honestly, I’m not sure what I’m doing..thanks for being here ♡

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 32K miles*

This is my favorite video you've made. :) The silliness with your friends (who you can tell you love), the natural beauty of the place you were in, and your narration of your thoughts -- maybe it felt like you didn't have a plan, but as a listener and viewer, I came away from this one inspired, and feeling like I wasn't alone. @@oldrooster25 The mandates could easily cause a Civil War, as they are in so many other countries. As for secession, yes Texas has considered it in the past, but they were confused, thinking they had to ask permission from the Feds, lol However, some Governor's, like DeSantis are simply standing up for the people and putting the Feds in there place by passing their own laws the override the Feds attempts to overstep.

I've had similar thoughts. Here's my take on it. In the end, none of us really knows why we're here or what we ought to be doing. And with our limited human perception, it is futile to try to understand the "grand plan". So as long as you're enjoying the moment and not hurting anyone, there really are no "bad" decisions. Since we're only here on this stunning planet for a brief moment, the best thing to do is revel in the experience and enjoy every aspect of this existence to the max.

Ah... The state of confusion, on next steps and chapters. The notion that one not knowing what they're doing is exciting to me. There's so much to take in for the next steps, whether finding land, building homestead, etc. etc. I don't know if I read you right, but it seems you seek balance of having a home-base, while also having the autonomy to roam. But very likely also a scenic area, where you can stay within nature. Looking at some of the shots throughout the videos, I think you can find that balance -- where you can stay within nature AND build on some of the creature comforts that you may be sometimes missing. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. BTW: the stumbling around in the morning is my favorite part of when I am on the road. I'm most at peace being lost. Wait... I'm not lost... I'm exploring. ;-) Happy trails! See ya on the next video!

Part of the fun is just participating in the adventure and seeing where it takes you. You have a bit of an advantage because of your previous life experiences in the corporate world to know what is also out there. Keep doing what you are doing and eventually it will, somehow, all work out. Always enjoy these videos.

Absolutely beautiful video❤ and not knowing what comes next, is what's awesome about this lifestyle. The "normal life" is predictable and boring. Take your time on choosing your Land, theres no hurry. Safe travels... 🚐

I spent 4 summers working on a lookout tower in WA state. It is the best job ever!!! Getting paid to look out the window at the mountains. Bellissimo!

I can relate so much haha. I find that if I'm overwhelmed and feeling lost. I put away the phone and social media for a few days. After a bit wisdom comes out with a message. 💗

ahh if it weren’t for always needing Google Maps, I’d happily toss my phone in a dark corner for days 😅 but yeah it really is important to take breaks. been trying to embrace that lately

What I like most about your videos, in addition to the beautiful landscapes and nature you introduce us to, of course, is your honesty about how van life, and a nomadic lifestyle, isn't always perfect. You don't romanticize it. You're willing to point out the costs and consequences that can come with living this way as well as the beauty and exhilaration that it can provide if one is willing to let get go of certainty and expectation.

I do think it’s important to show all sides. I’ve been challenging myself to learn (and embrace) doing just that, and this community has been amazing in supporting me as I stumble around in the dark ha 🤓 so thank you for that 🙏🏻

CS! Beautiful shoots! Thanks for sharing. Thank you for your honesty. At 68 I hold a few things as true. Be glad for every day. Be grateful. To help me remember these two things I carry a small rock in my pocket. It’s just a rock. Sometimes it’s a smooth rock that fits so well in my hand that I barely know that it is there. Sometime it’s a sharp, jagged rock that pokes and scrapes at my hand. Both are a reminder to be grateful. Sometimes I need a smooth gentle reminder. Sometimes I need a sharp jagged reminder. Stay open to the universe. Sometimes when we stop looking for the answer we find it right in front of us. Stay well. Stay safe. Enjoy every day. jt

Thank you for the beautiful videos. Reminds me of my days exploring the great Northwest in my youth with just a backpack, a compass, a map of the area I wanted to explore and good friends. Now, it's a challenge to hike any more than just 5 miles on rugged terrain:( So now, you and the rest of KZfaq take me to the places I once visited so many years before and I thank you for this from the bottom of my heart. However thankfully, I now live in central Idaho among the beautiful mountains and forests just outside my door every day but now I can sleep in a warm soft bed and a have a hot shower! All the very best to you as you continue your wonderful adventure.

Great reflection. It’s that uncertainty that’s scary. Not knowing if something is good or bad. But trying things is key! It’s how we learned to walk, to talk, to do anything we do now that we take for granted. So keep on trying things! Not knowing what we’re doing can be a really great sign that we’re reflecting on where we’ve been, what we’re doing, and where we’re going. I’ve been embracing “not knowing what I’m doing and just putting one foot in front the other” since 9 months ago when I left the corporate world. The time and space to just be me has been revitalizing. Whatever you do, it’ll work out exactly as it’s meant to be. Best on your journey! Thanks for sharing! 👍

Looks like you've acquired lots of camping and life experiences. You are already teaching many people how life can still be an adventure. You inspired me to get a van and try it out. I've always been kind of a minimalist introvert myself and you encouraged my next life steps. I'm kind of weak on the how as I'm sure you were at first too. I think the journey of learning as you go is the journey. Thanks for sharing your moments. Thank you.:)
