CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe) is named the new Heavyweight World Champion, defeating the reigning champ Max Baer (Craig Bierko).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true story of an athlete who achieved his greatest success against the most daunting odds of his life is brought to the screen in this historical drama. In the 1920s, James Braddock (Russell Crowe) from Bergen, NJ, was a promising contender in professional boxing; he had strength, spirit, and tenacity, but the combination of a serious hand injury and a 1929 defeat in a bout with light heavyweight champ Tommy Loughran sent his career into a serious tailspin. As Braddock's career in the ring dried up, the Great Depression put a stake through the heart of America's economy, and Braddock found himself working at the New York docks for pitiful wages as he tried to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and three children. Desperate for money, Braddock turned to his former trainer and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), who was unexpectedly able to scare up a bout for him, battling John Griffin at Madison Square Garden. While conventional wisdom had it that Braddock was too old, out of shape, and out of practice to have any chance of winning, he defeated Griffin, and continued beating his opponents with a powerful left hook that had been intensified by years of punishing dock work. In a nation desperate for good news, Braddock's surprising comeback became a tonic to struggling workers and unemployed people, and all eyes were on Braddock when in 1935 he took on powerful heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in what was both literally and figuratively the fight of his life.

A great movie, very well done I enjoyed it. My only problem with the movie was the portrayal of Baer. Max was far from the glitz and glam arrogant person they made him out to be. He did kill a man in the ring and he stayed in that man's hospital room with him, he sobbed when he died and nearly retired from fighting as a result. Max was a good guy and a good fighter he got a bad rap in this film because hollywood needs a bad guy, it's just a shame.

+Corby Oliver It really is a shame. Ron Howard is a really good filmmaker. I don't understand why he insists on turning fascinating true stories into Hollywood trash, like A Beautiful Mind and this.
@sethronalds9457

+Corby Oliver even in his retirement, his kids would find Max sobbing over the death years later. Hollywood needs villains which are not redeemable, it helps the audience get behind the hero that much more. I totally get what your saying though. Baer in real life was not at all the monster the film would suggest

One of the greatest films about boxing; the bulldog of Bergen, the 'Cinderella' Man, the champion who came back from oblivion, insignificance and infamy, into which he had fallen during the Great Depression; what a tremendous, heartbreaking story about willpower, courage and devotion to a greater cause! He fought for his loved ones, he fought for the simple people of New Jersey, plagued by the aftermath of the huge financial and social crisis, he fought for himself, for all the days he worked at the docks, starved to exhaustion and forgotten by everybody, and he triumphed.

Well I never went through the Great depression but I did go through the Great recession and I lose everything and came this close to being out on the streets. And I made my own little Cinderella comeback story and I came back swinging. Working three freakin jobs getting a second education and taking care of my family all so that I can open my own business and get out of poverty. A mission accomplished but by all means it was the equivalent of putting myself through the ringer so that I can give myself a second chance. I think that's why I love this story so my much. It's not easy to give yourself a come back but it can be done.

if i'm honest, i'll probably get a lot of disagreement with this, but in my opinion this is better than any rocky movie. Don't get me wrong I've seen all the rocky films 1-6 and each film is great, but this one is better in my opinion

Seeing the priest teared up and the widow cry by far a very emotional scene, tears of happiness, all that stress, fear and worrying on jimmy and hearing him as the new victor.

I wish they would have included the kiss on the cheek that Max gave Jim. The ultimate show of respect.

In the real fight, Jimmy ran over to max baer in celebration. Max was happy for him. Stunned...but happy. Max later confessed that he did not prepare.
