I'm not a fan of Bob Chipman, but he gave the funniest review of Breaking Dawn Part 2. He said something to the effect of; "I've watched movies while imagining better versions of them, whereas this movie imagines a better version of itself while I'm watching it!"

My favorite reaction is the jaded Producer Guy on Pitch Meetings, who suddenly gets excited: "Did this movie just get GOOD?" Then he's totally deflated to the point of reconsidering his career choice when he learns it's just a dream sequence.

I run my University’s bad movie club (the Anti-Cinema Cinema Club), and to close out our spring term we held a ROCKY HORROR-esque rowdy screening of TWILIGHT; replete with callouts, props (ie. waving a red flag whenever Edward does something creepy), a costume contest, My Chemical Romance and playing whiffle ball during the baseball scene. It was grand ol’ time and we’re turning it into an annual fixture, we’re gonna try to get Catherine Hardwicke to make an appearance.

Well, one good thing that came out of this franchise: the two lead actors went on to much bigger and better things with their careers that showed that they were not just "the Twilight people". Robert Pattinson has made a name for himself in critically acclaimed arthouse films and is even our current Batman. And Kristen Stewart has not only also done some great indie/arthouse work too, but she's also been nominated for a freaking Oscar! Yea, I'm pretty sure no one who saw her acting in this would imagine her eventually being referred to as "Academy Award Nominee Kristen Stewart". But I'm happy for the both of them, they both deserve the success they've found in recent years.

@@thecinematicmind I don’t think most people who’ve been paying attention over the last couple of years questions whether Robert can act. He’s nothing less than incredible. He completely disappears in every role, and finds a way to make each one distinct. Not many actors nowadays in his generation can do that! I also think he’s up there with Saoirse Ronan with his ability to nail a wide range of accents, maybe even better since he tends to do very regionally specific accents that can be hard to nail.

The issue is that these actors are best known for this series. Well that's not completely true. Taylor Lautner will always be Sharkboy to a lot of people. But anyway what didn't help is the massive amount of hype these movies got, the fact that Kristen played Bella with all the charm and charisma of a block of wood and that people actually thought Stephanie Meyer was a good writer. We can all thank "The Host" for showing Hollywood that she's a hack and the Twilight series was just pure dumb luck.

If there was one thing that makes watching the first film worth watching, it is the DVD commentary. It is just two hours of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart ripping into it MST3K-style while the director, Catherine Hardwicke is desperately trying/failing to make them stop. There's something almost beautiful in the knowledge that they were in just as much misery making these movies as we were watching them.

10:50 Wait, Victoria wanting to kill Bella doesn't make sense? I'm not a Twilight fan, but this is clearly a case of revenge by proxy. "Edward and his family are responsible for the death of my lover, so I'm going to kill Edward's lover to make him suffer". Seems pretty clear cut. Besides, who would be easier to kill? The soft, squishy, mortal or the vampire that can go toe-to-toe with a werewolf so tough, punching one hurts a normal human hand.

The worst part about BD part 2’s twist is that it contradicts canon. According to the books’ lore, Alice can’t see the future if werewolves (sorry, “shifters”) and hybrids are involved. So Meyer was okay throwing out a crucial piece of her world building just so none of her characters would die.

I happened to see Breaking Dawn part II opening night in the theater and the the crowd reaction to the battle scene at the end was like nothing I have experienced before or since. There was screaming, sobbing and almost total hysteria. The woman next to me was weeping uncontrollably. The way the crowd reacted you would have thought they had been forced to watch beloved family members murdered right in front of them. Actually, according to werewolf folklore, werewolves are just people who turn into wolves, and they can do so at will and at any time of day. Hollywood invented the whole "can only change at the full moon" thing. So... Twilight actually got it right, surprisingly.

Hello! Looong time viewer, rare time commenter. Thank you for providing much needed insight to movies I haven’t or have seen, and being a great source of entertainment for us, your viewers, for many years. I remember enjoying the Twilight reviews especially, given how much of a “Twilight hater” I was back in the day. But after seeing your reviews of 50 Shades of Gray and how much of a rip off of Twilight it was, it really gave me a whole new appreciation for the Twilight saga and more so for Robert Pattinson’s acting career (hearing his acting was incredibly limited in the film series). And I want to thank you for providing such insight on both sides. Because I’ve totally missed the merits Twilight had when my views were completely clouded with “worst love story ever”. Even more so considering this is one of my sister’s favorite franchises that I would shoot down a lot as a kid, but now feel myself pleasantly willing to join in on her movie nights and enjoy it for what it is, and appreciate it for being such a unique film that got many budding actors their start, and for providing laughs when things in the films don’t make sense. Thank you for doing this retrospective, Smeghead!

Same goes for Robert Pattinson as he was a great Batman. I'm very excited for the next CE as it will be the first one in a while that won't be a second look. I still find it baffling that David Slade, the director of Eclipse, just three years earlier made one of the best vampire films of all time (in my opinion), 30 Days of Night. If you want genuinely creepy, intelligent bloodsuckers in a true horror setting (you know, the genre that vampires are SUPPOSED to be from), then you can't do much better than that film.
@jbvader721
@jbvader721 2 жыл бұрын
It falls down once again to the source material Slade was working with. 30 Days of Night was based on a pretty decent comic book series that had a great concept (the vampires not only have shark-like fangs all over their teeth but speak their own language). And Twilight was well...Twilight.

13:52 I know this isn’t relevant to Twilight, but I stand by what I said previously: I think splitting Deathly Hallows into two movies was a good idea. The two movies together clock in at 276 mins, which is a four-and-a-half hours. If they’d tried to make it three hours for one movie, that would’ve meant either cutting out even more from the book (potentially leaving important questions and conflicts unresolved), drastically changing the story or have the pacing be set on fast forward. I honestly cannot imagine how they could fit everything into one movie.

I used to be one of those angsty teens who hated on this movie just because it was popular. I went back to this whole movie series thanks to Rifftrax, and I gotta say that both saved me from boredom during tough times in college. The entire saga is so droll and off-the-wall, that it's hard to believe the story was meant to be taken seriously. The "Dead or Alive" video game series, known for being shallow and just focusing on fanservice, seems like a serious story of brotherly love and forgiveness in comparison.

So you know how people criticize Twilight for having a huge age gap between the main characters? (Edward is 100+ and Bella is 17 I think) But here's the problem. In the Disney movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Kida is thousands of years old and Milo is 19-ish. In Avatar the Last Airbender, 112 year old Aang in a 12 year old body has a romantic relationship with Katara, who mind you is a teenager. (Yes, I also wish Zutara was canon) Speaking of "bender" in Futurama Fry is technically over 1,000 years old. Everyone, including the show itself, seems to ship him with Leela, who is implied to be in her mid-20s. And in Steven Universe, Rose Quartz is older than Earth, and she had a baby with some random human guitarist. No one complains about any of those. I just thought it was hypocritical and I want to hear other people’s stances.

While filming Twilight, Meyer gave him a draft of Midnight Sun, basically Twilight in Edward's perspective, so Pattinson already knew at that time about Edward's backstory. Midnight Sun also includes a moment where he contemplates killing Bella and them her classmate ace murder style and well...we can't really blame Pattinson for hating the character.
