The only thing truly outrageous about this movie is the idea that anyone thought it would succeed.
UPDATE: I've been informed that I was mistaken regarding The Rock's cell phone video. He was apparently talking about the Taylor Swift song "Bad Blood", and they edited it to make it sound like he was talking about "Young Blood" from the movie. So they couldn't even get Mr. Johnson to do them a 30 second favor. It's even more pathetic than I realized.

I’m really upset you made me think about that. Because that would’ve been the perfect fit. Thanks a lot!

@@MamaMOB Exactly, one of the main plot points of the cartoon, was The Holograms music was DIGITALLY ENHANCED by Synergy. The Misfits were the bad guys, but they played their own instruments. The cartoon always shows that the Misfits doing underhanded things, but technically Jem was dishonest, too. Especially on first episode, she enters a singing contest to stop The Misfits from cheating. A lot of this could have been included in the movie. They could've gone more into depth with style and public persona vs actual talent. As far as Kimber is concerned, she was overlooked in the cartoon, too. The father basically left everything to Jerrica. That could've been explored more, too.

I remember Jem from my childhood. That show stood out to me, I got to see it because I have younger sisters, but it was better written than GI Joe, Transformers, or cartoons for boys. I liked it because of that. The stories were more interesting than GI Joe vs. Cobra, or Autobots fighting Decepticons. In Jem, there were more stories about interpersonal relationships that involve dialogue, emotions, and thought. These are all good things that should not be treated as just girl's cartoons, but as something boys should watch too, if only to see something other than explosions and fighting, something a bit more about the human experience. One of the most unnerving parts of walking though a toy store or section is seeing how toys are gender divided, and that the girl's toys involve creativity and compassion, while the boy's toys involve combat and conflict. It breaks my heart because I can see the social conditioning happening at a very young age, and remember it myself. Boys should be taught about caring and compassion, just like girls are. War toys are bad, and violence is bad to teach our children. Jem the cartoon respected the intelligence of its demographic, which is something Mr. Fred Rogers emphasized, because there was such a lack of it in children's TV. At least we have Masha and the Bear now. Too bad this movie blew so hard, because that ending bit seemed like it would've helped.

Actually, I've found out something more interesting about the youtube clips of the people talking about "Jem" in this movie. Apparently, Jon Chu and two of the producers were hosting a "contest" for people who grew up watching the TV show and telling them to upload their videos talking about how much they love "Jem" and send it to #JemTheMovie, the winners would be guarenteed a spotlight cameo to be in the movie. But, apparently...that was never the case since those contestants got ripped off. Lol!!!
@GideonGleeful95
@GideonGleeful95 7 жыл бұрын
It was worse than that from what I've heard. They asked them to send those clips about how much the cartoon Jem meant to them and they put them in, but rather than, say, put them at the end as a tribute to the show or something, they placed them in a way that made them look like they were talking about the Movie Jem.

@Jakesgr8vlogs

I watched this review as soon as I was done watching one of the most boring, generic, and predictable movies ever. I believe the main reason why it cost $5million is because Jason Blum usually has every movie he produces be at a cheap budget and he thought it would work for Jem & the Holograms. This is the same guy who produced Whiplash, which costed less than Jem, made back 15 times its budget, and its success earned Blum an Oscar nomination. The reasons why Whiplash did better is because it's a better movie about music and it's a fantastic movie in general. I'm not too surprised they would have The Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Pratt, and Hana Mae Lee from Universal's Furious 7, Jurassic World, and Pitch Perfect 2 make cameos in the same movie. It's hard to believe this film exists, hell, it's hard to believe Seltzer and Friedberg are still given money. It's funny that most of the movies you review are all from Universal Studios, Sean, they never cease to run out of material for you to work with. Also, I at first thought Chris Stuckmann played the security guard, then I found out and realized that Stuckmann is smart enough to avoid this doomed piece of shit. Can't wait to see the next review! :)

I watched this movie knowing next to nothing about the cartoon to see what all the fuss was about. Didn't like it, obviously. It was vapid, the songs were stupid, and...well, pretty much everything Sean said. But after learning more about the cartoon, I am seriously appalled at just how SHITTY this adaptation was. I mean, in terms of failure, this is up there with The Last Airbender. Jem sounded like a cool character, especially for young girls. She's a rockstar, she helps foster kids, AND she's a badass. Give me a live-action version of that, I'd eat that shit right up! The only good thing about this was the end credits scene, and that's because I fucking love Kesha. I love Juliette Lewis too, so seeing them on screen together for that tiny segment was so much better than the entire movie. I'm also glad to know that Jerrica was 18 in this movie, cuz the whole time I was watching it I kept thinking, "how old is this girl? Why is Rio flirting with a minor? No seriously, HOW OLD IS SHE? Where's Chris Hansen when you need him?!" speaking of Mr. Ryan Guzman, I would love to see you review The Boy Next Door, aka the most unintentionally hilarious movie of 2015. He plays a 19 year old and Jennifer Lopez plays an english teacher. lmfao. IT'S SO BAD. but yeah, fuck this movie.

You know its really depressing when the highest rated movies based on Hasbro products is the "My Little Pony: Equestria Girls" series. No I'm not kidding. "Equestria Girls" has a 56%, "Rainbow Rocks" has a 98%, "Friendship Games" has a 91%, and I think the fourth one, "Legends of Everfree" has a 94%. And while I don't think they are deserving of being ranked up there with some of Pixar's greatest hits, they actually are quite good. Sure the first one is hit or miss (in my opinion its a guilty pleasure), but the sequels are actually pretty solid.

I think the reason this movie failed is simple. They gave it to Jason Blum. If you take a look at his filmography as a producer, He's the one who inflected all 6 Paranormal Activity movies, the 3 Insidious movies, The Purge 1,2 and the upcoming third film. The Visit, The Gallows, Unfriend, Sinister 2. It just goes on and on. So his whole quote about "lowering expectations" is something he clearly follows as a film producer.

The people who made the live-action Jem 2015 movie probably watch the 80s cartoon before, and very much HATED it. They made the movie so terrible probably because they want to make fun at the fans of the cartoon. I found out how bad the cartoon is by ThatLongHairedCreepyGuy. It suddenly make sense. Though I think Jem and the Holograms are not the only one suffer from this. G1 Transformers and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero also suffered from this. It all comes down to syndication in the 80s, airing every weekdays, which is quite common during that time period. Had Jem and The Holograms aired once per week, either Friday, Saturday or Sunday; the animators and writers would have much more time to polished their works (and also more time to rest as well)

I don't know why the RoboCop reboot is getting a lot of hate from people. I actually thought it was better than the original in my opinion because it dove more into the psyche of what would probably happen if a regular cop was nearly killed and was made into a crime fighting robot. I'm not saying that it's perfect but I can take it a lot more seriously than the original.

TigerTrollUSA If it wanted to take itself seriously, why have Samuel L Jackson's character? I guess the producers wanted to tap into the nostalgic bone of fans who loved the original by having at least one goofy character to offset the "serious" tone. The real question is whether you like the goofy antics of the Paul Verrhoven Robocop or this...ecch! But what do I know, guess it's just a matter of personal taste.

Worst part is a Modern Jem and the Holograms could work. Sci-fi elements with music and a holographic light based transformation, that alone could have easily pulled in the younger Steven Universe demographic and still kept the older fans for keeping within the spirit of the original!! They could still have a young teen be a hit internet sensation, maybe already big youtuber but not as big as she could be, who just happens to find her dad's super advanced holographic computer. Her and her friends decide to use this device to promote their brand after they find out exactly what it does. But because they did this, people from Jerrica's dad's past know that she's in possession of super advanced tech that they've been looking for and she's pretty much using it as an expensive accessory. Have Jem be invited to be this famous pop star as a result of trying to get Synergy. So the whole movie could have been an action adventure modern musical with 80s inspired elements to it. It could still be live action. Have the KZfaq contestants praising Jem be in the credits as a big "thank you for being a fan" message. But no. They had to be lazy. I've honestly seen bootleg movies have more effort than this!

"Set up to fail" is right. I have to wonder if this movie was the result of some kind of inside Universal power-play to get someone kicked from the board or outright fired by giving them permission to do a passion project and then given just enough rope to hang themselves with it, block attempted re-writes and/or re-shoots citing "time, this movie was supposed to be done yesterday!" so as to ensure the movie was going to stink like a paper-mill and not even make back it's modest budget. I wonder.....because this movie is so goddamn bad there has to be SOME excuse as to why this didn't even resemble the property of Jem and the holograms, yet was still greenlit and shat out into theatres.

I think that it’s worth mentioning but the young actress who played Shaina caught a LOT OF HATE over her being chosen to play her. Her father, another talented actor who’s name escapes me, put out a statement about the abuse she received for being cast. If memory serves it wasn’t because she was black but because she wasn’t “dark enough” and had straighter hair instead of the clear afro that the cartoon character had. I think it is disgusting when fans heap crazy abuse on young actors and actresses for going for roles when it’s not like Hollywood is beating down their door. With that being said, I still feel they did that actress dirty. The franchise might be called Jem and the Holograms but each woman had a personality, backstory, likes, and dislikes. Note: The fact that they were all foster children does make sense since they aged down the characters and originally Aja and Shaina were foster children of the Bentons. It’s still massively dumb since there was a touching story there between the Benton parents and the foster children.

Smeg, I am so so so so so so SORRY you had to watch this. Oh SHIIIIIT this movie was fucking HORRIBLE. And to correct you on Jem's mother.....SYNERGY WAS HER MOTHER. In context, Jerrica/Jem's mother was originally SUPPOSED to be Synergy after her death but Jem's father couldn't bear seeing her face in Synergy's programming so he created the new figure to replace er The entire series, Jem was talking to her late mother but in the form of a digital guardian and this was one of the BIG plot points and twist of the show and something the movie did NOT get right. The way Synergy is presented in the movie is just an R2D2 rip-off; a TOY basically. It lost it's place as being a guardian to Jem and Kimber and instead became an OBJECT rather than the mother who was still there watching over them in spirit, especially since we later learn that Eric destroys the tapes that Jem's mother had made so there is basically nothing left of her career and talents but with Synergy, she was there. This was one of the things that really pissed me off about the movie because that part WAS an important part of the story; BOTH of Jem and Kimber's parents were important but BOTH are written off as dead parents for the sake of teh dramas. There father was important for not only owning Starlight but for starting the orphanage and I already mentioned the history behind Jem's mother and Synergy. They were not just off-beat characters. As the series went on, we learn more about BOTH of them after their deaths and how it impacted not only Jem but EVERYONE. Wat the movie did to both of them was utter bullshit. And Shana.....FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. Just....fuck it.

The sad thing is that Christie Marx made a cameo in this movie so she could have been aware of what they were doing but I guess she had no hands in the story development. I'm sure if she had been she would have been able to handle a lot of the updates in a better way, including HOW to incorporate both of their parents into the movie but whatever. What is done is done and the movie just SUCKED.

***** Believe it or not....I talked to Sophie about the issue when the movie came out and asked her a few questions on the subject. The thing is, the script that was handed to IDW vs the one that was worked on for the movie are two completely different worlds lead by two completely different ideas though they were based on the same property. If I could put it in words well, Hasbro KNEW what they were doing with both but despite the money they threw at the movie it does feel like the comic was more favored due to it sticking to the source (while of course doing its own thing) while the movie was just....yeah. Think of it like this; the comic and the movie had their own directors and these directors had two different visions while Hasbro let them tweak whatever they wanted and do whatever they wanted. Sophie has ALWAYS been a fan of the series and has stated that many times which shows a lot in the comic. I....I really can't say WHAT the director of the movie was actually doing or if he was a fan of the show at all. I ENJOYED GI Joe, which he worked on, but Jem was a hot mess and I can only lend that two the fact that he was trying to make it like one of his concert movies and didn't think that girls would be interested in the other elements of the series, which explains why so many things were dropped completely including the sci-fi elements that actually set the series apart from your basic girly music pop show. Pan-Pizza summed it up pretty well when he said that Jimmy Neutron did the entire movie in 15 minuets as it's your basic singer needs money, singer gets famous, singer dumps friends, singer hits rock bottom and gets back with friends, things are solved in the end type of story. Jem may have had a lot of elements similar to that (How many times did Kimber say she wanted to quit the band due to her feeling over-shadowed?) but it wasn't done so straight forward and flatly. And about their ages; there is a thing going on that exects think that kids can't connect with a character unless it's another kid so an adult Jem would have been too old for them apparently. It's straight up BULLSHIT but that's how things are. Sometimes you just have to bang it through their heads that you want your character a certain age for a reason.

The appeal of the original JEM is that it's FROM the 80s. Like a lot of classic properties, the time they were originally made contributes to a lot of the value in them. When you revamp these classic things to be "modern", you take away a great deal of the aesthetic and tone that made the original properties work to begin with. Making things "modern" doesn't improve them... hopefully Hollywood will learn this.

This has probably already been said, but what is most horrifying about this film for me is that in the original announcement video and for a while after, the three stooges try and sadly for a time succeeded in milking the original fanbase for clips of themselves talking about why Jem the cartoon inspired them...as if they were talking to Jem herself. Free clips from fans for the movie. I need to dig back and look, but I've seen articles claim they even had fake auditions (hence some clips in the movie of people acting like the original characters instead of talking about why the show inspired them?) as if they'd actually take an innovative tack and put true unknowns passionate about the show who had potential as actors, for someone who handled the paranormal activity films, at least, in the movie. Obviously this was more disgusting clip bait as the professionally represented cast was rolled in for every role. The directors and producers deserve whatever insane backlash they hopefully got. Bombing at the box office so bad it probably didn't even make back its tiny budget is the most important part though. Whether what I said above was completely true or not, people still knew to stay as far away as the fans did. I also hope if anyone else ever tries to bait people for free clips for their professional grade movie like that, a precedent for class action lawsuiting them into oblivion can be set.

Her response was that we could do nothing except at most writing fanfiction because it is after all someone else's property and that she could do nothing. It's really dumb for these idiots to come along and try to reinvent these things like they are making some great masterpiece and people will go nuts for their grand vision...when all people really want is a live action version of the cartoon. 2ToyBoys It's a shame that Hasbro let Jon Chu make and direct his vision for a Jem movie and co-produce it with Scooter Braun and Jason Blum with their production companies. Hasbro should have not ignored Christy Marx who co-wrote and co-created characters etc from the animated series, for so many years either. If they had let her make her own movie or even an updated animated series, Jon Chu's movie wouldn't have happened and then they wouldn't have wanted to scrap everything with any future Jem projects and products, so I partly blame Hasbro as well as Jon and the gang. I'm glad that Jason Blum apologised to us fans earlier this year, who didn't like the movie, or who didn't go to see it. It's a case of too little too late though, Jason. Christy Marx was happy that he understood now as she posted the article on her fan page on Facebook. She hoped that Jon Chu would have apologised and maybe would have understood by now too. I agree with her as did other people on her fan page.

I loved the Jem cartoon when I was little! Have seen reviews of this, and that is enough for now....

Well, there is the IDW comic books, which is actually pretty good. So, you're not missing out on much, it's still going on.

Neo-Xgray87 yeah it's great and what's really good is the comic book creators got in touch with Christy Marx and got her permission they may still get in touch with her to this day.

ladynikkie I know, right?! And I'm still a fan of the comics, even to this day. Let's pray and hope that someday it might get adapted into a possible animated series as the planned "reboooted" Jem TV show that Christy Marx had on shelves since 2004.
