NOTE: I know the Nostalgia Critic recently reviewed this movie as well. By the time I found out he was going to do so it was far too late to change my own plans, and I'm certainly not trying to steal his thunder (as if I could). Shit happens.

Fun fact: in the original comic the TMNT were created when a canister of radioactive material hit a young Matt Murdoch in the head causing blindness (Daredevil). The canister bounced off and landed in the sewer causing the TMNT to be created. So TMNT is technically in the Marvel Universe.

One thing I notice is that Michael Bay's movies about superhuman things tend to focus more on the ordinary humans THAN those superhuman things. In transformers, the military does most of or a lot of the fighting. And now in this, we have April delivering the killing blow. Says interesting things about how he approaches these franchises.

DarthBobCat If Michael Bay directed My Little Pony, he would’ve focus mostly on the humans as the protagonists instead of the ponies, and instead of “Friendship is Magic”, it’s “Friendship is Explosive”... just like EVERY FREAKING TOY BASED MOVIE HE MADE!!! Travis Knight did that right when he directed Bumblebee, and rebooted the franchise. Nice!

Here's a useless fact for ya! Sacks sounds very close to the Swedish word sax, which in English means scissors. Considering he was originally supposed to play the Shredder, I think this is kinda funny, though I highly doubt that was intentional.
@fermintenava5911
@fermintenava5911 3 ай бұрын
Here's an even more useless fact: His original name Sachs would indicate he's from Saxony, and the Saxons supposedly got named after their swords. And the name of their swords, "sahs" is also related to the Swedish word for scissors. But then they named him Sacks, which means he is balls. Or a dick. Still a downgrade.

They should have kept Eric Sachs as "A" Shreader, then at the end have a scene with a man in proper Samurai style armour being told that Sachs Techo shreader failed. Then you could have a sort of Franchise Shreader thing where all Shreader's gang-boss minions don the Shreader mantle. This can explain why he keeps coming back after getting killed so many times, this way Oroku Saki can be a General controling everything and his minion Shreaders do all the dangerious stuff. You can also have several different "styles" of Shreaders as each Foot Clan Underbosses has a different Shreader Armour.

I'm kinda disappointed that you did not mention how the turtles were saved from severe blood loss. It is the most implausible thing ever. You see....April gives them a dose of adrenaline...and that magically heals them! Okay list of things wrong: 1) Adrenaline does not work like that. You can't have adrenaline and be magically healed. 2) Even if you were, you would still be weak afterward from the blood loss 3) WHY THE FUCK WOULD A DUDE WHO IS INTENT ON KILLING YOU HAVE ADRENALINE ON STANDBY?!?!

Saying that the TMNT franchise is stupid, is kind of debatable. I'm mean yes the idea of giant mutated turtles doing martial arts is a ridiculous idea, and while the mirage comics were a parody other comics, they still manage to take themselves seriously as oppose to the 80's cartoon where they just embrace that ridiculousness. Which is something that the original 90's movie had going for with the seriousness of the comics, while it did have some of the silliness of the cartoon, but the tone of it in general was the dark nature of the comics which also was adapted by the 2003 animated series. The movie also have a story arc that was done really well. I do think that the TMNT franchise has had developed over the years, making it more for an older audience, especially with the IDW comics.

Really good review. A couple of things, though. One - WETA Digital did the effects for the Turtles, not ILM. Two - you forgot to mention the phenomenally stupid plot point of Splinter and the Turtles learning ninjitsu FROM A FUCKING BOOK! Three - you also forgot to point out that the majority of the movie's plot points, especially the climax, are ripped off wholesale from The Amazing Spider-Man. Four - I do agree with you that April delivering the final blow to The Shredder is insulting. However, if the April from the 2012 cartoon had done this, it would have been awesome. On a side note, if the Turtles were to be realized through practical effects, there are only two people working today that can create creature makeup to rival Jim Henson - one is Richard Taylor, who created the makeup for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, and the other is Rick Baker. Say what you will about Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, but the apes in that film looked fucking awesome. In fact, I daresay they even look better than the apes in the new movies. Don't get me wrong those apes still look awesome, but well done practical effects will always trump even the best CGI;

Cinematic Excrement You're right. My bad. But my point still stands - there are plenty of people in Hollywood who will gladly produce phenomenal makeup for the Turtles. I should add Spectral Motion to the list. They created the creature makeup for the Hellboy movies, and they even brought in Rick Baker as a consultant.

Yeah, I agree with you on the April bit. Even the original 80/90s April bringing the final punch would have been awesome because that April was at least LIKABLE and even if she did get into trouble, she was showing to be competent as a reporter unlike....what we saw in the movie who seemed to fail at everything other than having a look of dull surprise on her face. The turtles looked butt-ugly to me but as I look at it, I think the main issue was the face and the skin texture. They looked OILY and too much like Shrek. Even if the Henson turtles looked silly, they looked pleasing to the eyes of both fans of newcomers. These looked like pure shit in a half shell.

When I was a kid I thought Vernon was drawn kind of like a rat so I called him "Vermin Fenwick." Apparently I was the only one who knew what that meant though because whenever I'd say it the other kids just gave me a blank stare. There were a lot of words I knew that no one else seemed to for some reason. But I also called Baxter Stockman "Bastard" and everyone knew that one. I think James Rolfe and his friends did that too so it's nice to know I wasn't the only one there at least.

What seems to be forgotten is the Ninja Turtles were a a parody, a satire, in their original comic book form. The first comics were nothing but a razz on Marvel comic tropes, they incorporated the go-to hooks Marvel had come to rely on: teenagers, mutants, martial arts, and anthromorphic animals.

The thing that annoyed me the most was the whitewashing of the Japanese culture/Ninja element. For me, that's always been the most interesting aspect of the turtles and the thing that really is the crux of the story. All the pizza eating, joke spewing fun are great components, but it was the juxtaposition of the tonal darkness and conceptual silliness present in the original comic that drew me in.

Now that I think about it, I don't think movie Turtles have EVER beaten Shredder. In the first he's actually fighting Splinter, who just dodges and lets his own momentum carry him over the ledge into a garbage truck where he gets crushed by Casey Jones. In the second, he goes Super Shredder and then tears the dock down on top of himself. He wasn't even in the third, or the CGI. Having the Turtles NOT be the ones to finish him off is something of a tradition at this point.

They should have NOT altered the script. Sachs should have been kept as "seeming" to be The Shredder and kept the movies script with him as the main bad guy. Then at the end you can have Karai, the female Japanese student/daughter of Oroku Saki, in a end credit type thing going to a place in Japan. You then see a man in shadow wearing traditional Samurai Armour sitting on a throne. Karai say's something like "Your American experiment has failed my lord, He was a poor student" It pans to a set of bladed gauntlets and Shredders traditional bladed Samurai helmet. The figure puts on his helmet and sits forward showing it is the Shredder and he says "It doesn't matter, I have many more students where that fool Sachs came from" Fade to Black. This adds that Sachs wasn't the ACTUAL Shredder, just someone pretending to be him, this also explains the stupid mech suit. It also shows a reason why The Shredder keeps dying in the comics and seems to come back to life, because the ones that die were also Shredder's students. This also cuts out the numerous plot holes created when they altered the script. It still would have been a shite movie, but at least it would have made some semblance of sense. Also has anyone else noticed that for TMNT they completely ripped off the ending for Amazing Spiderman?

Remember from his room review where he realizes Tommy Wiesau is the lead actor, and his smile slowly melts in to frown of horror? I actually thought that was one of his funnier jokes

AtheistGamer Nostalgia Critic's reviews aren't really reviews, there just bad sketch comedy and mugging for the camera. At least with Smeggy he actually reviews the movie. He may do a joke every now and then but it's not in sacrifice of the review.

I'm guessing the next review could be one of the Jurassic Park sequels, considering the release of Jurassic World is right around the corner.

Seems like that ever since Michael Bay's Coyote Ugly cameo, every Bay-related movie would include at least one "Bay Girl" - slight variation of a Bond Girl - for some reasons.

CGI is really not as cost-effective as everyone makes it out to be, particularly if it's as highly detailed as something like the Turtles. That's also one of the reasons why there's way too much focus on the humans: to avoid spending too much on visual effects. The rubber-suited Turtles from the first three films didn't have this issue, as far as I can tell. At least the Turtles are mo-capped actors, which give the actors something to react to, unlike with the Star Wars prequels. Not that the actors have a lot to work with, anyway.

This is true and erroneous! The use of CGI effects may be most cost effective in reducing or eliminating the high insurance costs associated with the making of these films(action, sci-fi, fantasy). The use of practical effects involves the applications of explosives( a Michael Bay fav) pyrotechnics, hydraulics, etc. All very dangerous to the cast and crew. If all of the effects are digital or CG, then in principle there is no danger to the cast and crew. This includes dangerous location-shoots.

Ah its not in NY in 2014 its 2021, that's why they never bother to ask the police, they have been defunded, by a lot. Apparently the elevator scene where they are beatboxing was not scripted.

While I still lament the fact that we never got the true-to-the-roots anarchistic splatter-fest based on the original comics, this could have been so much worse. I'd go as far as to say that I liked it for what it was; A feel-good pop-corn action flick with fun visuals. After the Transformers sequels and Man of Steel, I consider that a success. Which is kind of sad in of itself, if you stop to think about it, but that's the hand we genre-fans have been dealt.
