Some good advice here Rod. In Mb however, the LTATT specifically refers to the registration #'s of the firearm(s) registered to you. Therefor to borrow another person's firearm, the STATT is required from start to finish. A couple members of our club recently went through this exact process. Last time I purchased a pistol and had my ATT updated, I noticed they had removed the general "to any licensed gunsmith" clause. They assured me that a STATT would be issued whenever requested for this purpose.

I don't think there's anyone who's going to use a hard case when they're going out hunting. The reason why I wouldn't use a hard case for going out hunting is because a soft case with heavy cordial or Cavalier will be more suitable maneuver in heavy bush.

Hey Rod. I read that you can get a LTATT with two addresses and the designated range listed for restricted firearms. I just wanted to know if you’ve heard of this because the nearest designated range to where I reside is a 3 hour drive away, but only 30 minuets away from my family’s home. Rather than drive 6 hours and spend $100 in gas to spend 1 hour shooting, I’m hoping I’m able to include my parents address in a LTATT so I can go to the range when I have a long weekend off and visit my folks to make it worth my while.
@CanadianBeefman12310 жыл бұрын
CAUTION: In ONT. an LTATT does NOT cover you to take your restricted firearm to a gunsmith OR a border crossing...you need a STATT for both. A LTATT only covers you to take a restricted firearm from your home to YOUR home range...a separate invitation is required if you are going to any other range other than your own.

The following is not legal advice: A few things have changed in the past 5 years. My ON LTATT allows me to take my R to any approved range in the province. Says so right on the paperwork I got with my new license card when I bought my first R. As far as I know I am able to take it to a buddy's range 300 kms away without calling the CFO for a STATT although an invitation is very helpful to establish why you are so far from your dwelling-house with your R. I also got an opinion from a lawyer specializing in firearms law which says that the ON CFO, if asked, allows you to stay at a hotel overnight or the property of a friend or relative or any second property which you may own when going out of town to an approved range provided that the property you are staying at is closer to the range you are shooting at than your primary dwelling house where the R is registered (otherwise it would be more reasonable to drive home and not stay at your second property, the friend/relative's house overnight). If your geography works out for you in this scenario, this is a good and legal way to get your R to your hunt camp and then carry it and fire it there provided that you do not have an approved range there and there are no provincial or municipal laws which would prohibit the discharge of the gun at the camp. And before someone asks, an approved firing range is not the only place you may discharge an R. It is critically important that you have legal possession of the R at the place of discharge first and then determine whether there are any laws which would prohibit the loading and discharge of the R firearm at that location. The location must also be safe of course and most hunt camps way back in the bush are safe locations. Much bigger, more dangerous guns are discharged there routinely. You get legal possession at a camp through the scenario I outline above. Probably best to call the CFO to let them know that you are going to the out of town range and staying at an alternative property overnight first though to CYA.

If I was on my way to the range and decided stop at a gunshop and buy a new gun would I need a short term ATT to transport it to the range? Would I have to bring the new gun home first and then leave to the range with the new gun.From what I understood the LTATT is for transporting guns from home to the range and the short term ATT is for newly purchased guns to bring from the shop to your home.
@civiladvantage9 жыл бұрын
Yes, short term ATT required for new purchase.

You mention using your ATT to bring your firearm to border crossings. What is the legality for Canadians to carry in the U.S.A.? Do you apply for a CCW permit or what? Another great video Rod.
@heavybones10 жыл бұрын
Each state can be different so you have to be careful. Maybe consult a lawyer. When I looked into it a while ago for WA state for a non-US resident who is Canadian they will give you a permit if you are going to a shooting competition or for hunting down there and have a licence. Utah (and some other states) used to issue CCW permits to non- US resident Canadians (don't think they do this anymore) and the Utah CCW permit was recognized in like 30 states meaning you could carry throughout much of the US; just don't cross into the wrong state. I think now it is mostly the hunting and shooting competition exceptions but you have too really look into it.
@snapshooterzeroeight607310 жыл бұрын
Hey bud you said the long term ATT covers you for to and from approved ranges and to border crossing. Does your ATT actually state that? Mine only says to and from approved ranges and sporting competitions within Manitoba from 0:00hours - 0:00 hours.

Is there a law or 'rule' about the secure opaque case having a combination lock as opposed to just a key lock? I have heard some differing opinions on this but have not seen any real legal statute.
@civiladvantage10 жыл бұрын
Nothing in the law about that. Just "securely locked and not easily broken into".

Hey Rod, great video again. Totally off topic but I would like to get your opinion on the Sun News networks article about the RCMP's attempt to reclassify firearms that are currently listed as non-restricted to restricted or even to prohibited. I went to my local gunsmith and he confirmed this to be true. He listed several firearms including, the sig 550, kriss vector, robinson arms XCR, the CZ 858 and more that I can't remember. The gunsmith told me that they are saying that these firearms are variants of firearms that are aleady restricted or prohibited therefore there is no new legislation needed to do this. Can you clarify if this is indeed true and if so what do you think is the best way to become involved as a firearms activist? Thanks
@civiladvantage10 жыл бұрын
They want to reclassify them now but how? No one would turn them in. We will all need to put in some activist effort in the coming months. Stay tuned for a call to action.

Situation: I have met a lady whose hushand passed away a few years ago. He had some guns, including handguns. She never advised the RCMP of his passing and has never been contacted by RCMP. I would think the non restricted would probably be fine as soon as in my possession. Restricted obviously different matter. What would you advise how to help her? She's willing to have them signed over to me (I have RPAL)
@civiladvantage10 жыл бұрын
You need only to register them online at the CFP website and have them physically verified within 30 days. I don't deal with that kind of stuff too often so I'd call the CFP and tell them you're just looking for information for someone else to verify what I said. You need only to ask about the restricteds, the non-restriceteds don't exist.

If you wanted to carpool with a buddy to the range, and you plan on bringing restricted firearms with you, how would you go about doing this? From my understanding, ATTs are meant to allow you to transport your restricted firearms from your home to a licensed range/gunsmith. If you're picking up your buddy, that means stopping at his house first, before going to the range together. In all likelihood, your buddy's house is not a range or a gun shop, which is the confusing part about firearms transportation laws. How would you do this without breaking the law?
@rileyfreeman78369 жыл бұрын
ik u wrote the comment 7 months ago but i can explain it..... you can stop anywhere unless it's to far out of your way to the range you can defiantly pick someone up you can even park your car and run into a store for bullets things like that

In my experience it's the same as the US. To make a 16" barrel turn into a 18.5" barrel lets say in a Robarms XCR with a muzzle device the muzzle device MUST be permanently attached to the barrel by pinning and spot welding the pin. That is how people in the states can get away with buying a 14.5" barrel and then pinning the muzzle device to get the 16" barrel. Otherwise they would meet to get a SBR tax stamp (200$) and a six month waiting period. Here in Canada once you permantly modify the muzzle device on your restricted rifle to 18.5" it must be verified and proved non restricted then it will be reclassified. This is my understanding of it.
@BGTACTICAL10 жыл бұрын
As long as the restricted rifle is not restricted by name of course.

What does the law say about Americans transporting guns across the border? I have had several discussions about moving to Alaska but we wouldn't go without our guns. How much flak are we going to catch for transporting a half dozen handguns from Washington to Alaska? And we would also be transporting a couple dozen bolt actions, single shot and pump actions. I really don't want to attempt this and find out last minute (or worse) in the act that I was breaking the law.

RedDirt RedBeard you fill out a form to carry long guns through Canada. I've done it several times. You do this before you travel and you declare them at the borders. I've had no issues. You can only bring so much ammo, 1500 rounds is what I recall. You can not bring any ammo that can be used in a pistol. You don't want to try bringing pistols to travel through Canada. No clips or magazines that can be used in a pistol. +10 round 10/22 mags are prohibited.
