Where city cops are concerned there is no such thing as safe storage. Consider the case of Mike Hargreaves in Toronto. For two days, thieves used sledgehammers and blowtorches to blast open his 1,700-pound, concrete-and-steel Brinks safe. After that they made off with about 35 guns. Toronto Police still charged Hargreaves with unsafe storage and he refused to return to Canada from Florida. It took 11 years before they decided to drop the bogus charges.

I know this is an older video, but I am going to weigh in here. I have a gun "cabinet" which is all I could afford at the time I got into firearms. Now I have a small gun "safe" which I store my restricted firearms in, which happens to fit in my bedroom closet. The cabinet now just holds non-restricted and ammo.

Hey guys,Hi Rod, love your channel, best Canadian specific channel out there.New shooter here from Red Deer AB (and first time poster). I know that the "stackon" argument has been beaten to death but I just wanted to put in my $.02. I thought it was settled.. ie: As per the previous ruling The crown vs Harry Barnes in Ontario June 24,2011 before the justice Carol Brewer ..The judge ruled that the metal school lockers Mr Barnes was using constituted a safe thereby negating the need for trigger locks. Below is an excerpt from the judges ruling. "[22] I find that the cabinets in which the defendant's prohibited firearms were stored fall within the definition of a· safe. Both of the lockers in which the prohibited firearms were stored were made of steel. Each cabinet was securely locked: one by a key and a padlock; the other by a locking system that uses a key to unbolt rods in the door from the frame of the unit. Indeed, despite their disagreement on other issues, the Crown and the defense expert both accepted that the units were securely locked. The Crown has not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that there was non-compliance with the regulation. The charges are dismissed". the first locker sounds like a school locker and the second sounds like a stackon. Before anyone says im arguing semmantics let me remind you this is legal precedent. Am I incorrect?

Oh sorry, one more comment... 3:54 I have that same gun cabinet, I use cabinet and not safe as you did for the following reason. Most people do not know that Stack on has a trigger switch to unlock those electronic safes. There are even videos on YT showing how to break into that safe in under a minute. I called the company and it does void your warranty, but all you have to do is take the interior cover off the door, follow a wire down to the trigger switch and disconnect it. That being said, the gauge of this "safe" made me uncomfortable and I now only use it to secure ammo. My guns are now locked in a heavy duty 875 pound Liberty Safe.

As a locksmith I would hardly call a Costco locking box a safe. I have open many and it usually takes a few minutes with a 12-inch pry bar. Maybe that's why they are called a "Fire safe" safe from a fire but not safe from burglary.

Problem with those costco safes in this video is the lock actuator are easily fooled into opening with a speaker magnet in a sock. About 3 seconds and your open.

most firearms owners can't really afford the 3-5000$ for a "gun safe". most of the cheap safes are just that cheap, tin. have the space required to hold a 1/2-1ton steel block. as far as the law is concerned , a room with restricted access which means one ent/exit with lock is considered safe storage. storage with electronic locks can be hacked easy enough. tumbler/dial locking systems less so.

Great topic. However, it is not a fireproof safe. It is fire rated, which is a HUGE difference. You also have to check the temperature rating. Some FIRE safes are rated only 0.5 hours at a very low temperature. Whereas high quality safes will be much higher temperature rated AND for more than an hour. I have seen them rated up to 2 hours, if my memory serves me correct.

Hey Rod, just a follow up to my previous post regarding reclassification of firearms like the sig . Well don't look now but here we go, the sig is now prohibited! So it begins, we now have 1000 to1800 new criminals thanks to this unjust change. Remember that call to action that you said was coming.....is that time now? We need to organize, we need to educate not just the government but the public as well. We as firearms owners need to lobby like never before or else we will see ours rights continue to erode. Time to be an activist whether we like it or not.

So i guess it is okay to use costco small safe .. they weight about 50 or 60 pounds,., they offer fire resist up to 90 minutes which is better than some gunsafes.. and they can be bolted on the wall. They seem more sturdy than gun cabinet.. using those small safe will allow to store handguns without trigger lock.. but in case we doubt, adding a trigger lock to each gun will make everything 100% legal.

I go above and beyond. All of my firearms have either trigger locks or cable locks and all are locked in a gun cabinet in a locked room/vault with concrete walls on three sides and a heavy reinforced wall and oak door on the remaining side. All ammo is locked in a separate cabinet in the same room. When transporting, all non-restricted have a cable lock and locked in steel transport box. Restricted Long guns are cable locked, then locked in a specific transport case and locked in the steel transport box. Pistols are cable locked, locked in a specific case and then locked in a separate (from the long guns) steel transport box. Ammo for the pistol is locked in the steel transport box for pistols. Other ammo such as shot gun ammo is locked in a separate locked box. It may seem like a lot to get ready to go to the range. However, I don't want any drama doing so. No one can accuse me of cutting corners and being unsafe. I give the criminals nothing. I also give the law enforcement nothing. Great videos. Keep up the good work.

@@1966cambo I agree with you. Obviously, I'm not the problem. What should be happening is tougher laws against criminals. Oddly, it's mostly the Eastern part off the country that thinks that way. The west is ready to separate and the bleeding heart liberals behind.

Hey Rod any input on the 'legal' transport of ammunition? So off to the range with my SR9 all locked up and unloaded and case locked etc. ……what about the ammo?

Locked in the case with the gun is ok. If you have unlocked non-restricteds, keep the ammo in the trunk or farthest away from the driver. Not the law but should keep them at bay....

A bit fuzzy logic at the conclusion of the video. Previous non-restricted firearm storage videos instructed that a secure locking device and under the bed is okay. Is this video now suggesting that even these non-restricted ones go into a safe? Or is a locked cabinet or room, still okay? Granted, restricted firearms should go into a safe. Good policy. But someone please confirm the answer to my question regarding non-restricted firearms.

You would love the overkill I did with my firearms, I built a 5ft by 5ft by 8ft fire resistant vault in my basement against a 9 ft concrete wall 1 layer of fg drywall 1 layer of concrete board 3 5/8 steel stud with fire proof insulation then concrete board again and 2 layers of fg drywall. access is a 90 min. steel door with 3 locks BUT this door is hidden and I have a dummy door that is just for show, the whole thing is then covered with Hardi plank siding. Inside I use a safe I bought at Costco ( supposed to hold 14 guns but I think they lied) I keep my handguns inside this safe, but they have trigger locks and inside a separate Sentry fire proof safe. My ammo is kept in the vault but locked up in bolted lock-boxes. PS my wife just rolls her eyes at all this LOL

When it comes to the law, it has to do with what the court defines as the minimum requirement. The language is very specific. A safe is not a vault. A container, safe, vault can all be defeated with tool and time. There is no established standard on locking type/metal composition/thickness, etc. Your definition of a Safe is not outlined in precedent. Blacks Law and the dictionary defines it as a metal container with a locking device to secure valuables. That could be anything. The law is ambiguous and your opinion on the minimum container that could be classified as "a safe" is far beyond the definition. Do you want to test this in court with you standing in front of a judge? No, of course not and so your advice to exceed the standard is the right call. But if your trying to tell people what a "safe" is, you need to point these things out.

The funny thing is the police evidence vaults in Saskatoon were broken into once in the 90s. I know one of the guys later convicted of the burglary. Tons of criminal cases were tossed out as a result of the burglary i heard. So if the police cant stop a determined thief then how can they prosecute anyone that at least tries to lock up their guns. And yes i did see the evidence pics of the police vaults cut open. The burglars used cutting torches and cut their way through the doors. There was 2 walk in vaults if i recall correctly. Sure shines a light on the police in my opinion. They sure have double standards for sure. Oh and the kicker is... The vaults were in the Saskatoon Courthouse. So the burglars actually broke into a main law enforcement building and robbed the criminal justice system.

I dont agree with your assertion of exceeding the law, such as locking ammo. Either you comply with the law or you don't, "exceeding" the law is a curious concept to me. Also, something is either a cabinet/box or a safe. Lag bolting it to the floor/wall does not in any way change the legal characteristics of it. Besides those points, I appreciate this and all your videos. Keep em coming. Thanks.

Thanks for commenting. Just making suggestions to help folks stay out of trouble. I'm not interested in being a judicial experiment for some young crown employee to see what will stick and what won't at a cost of 10K to me. Taking steps to improve the security of your storage greatly contributes to the mood of prosecutors. When you have exceeded the law, they won't even try it. It's up to the individual. I don't like it anymore than you do, believe me....
