As a 29-year Veteran of the US Army, can't imagine having such a small and quiet generator in the field/on deployment. Logisticians are going to love this product. Would be nice to use so many different types of fuel depending on where a unit is located.

Next presentation, please go deeper on the residential usage and expenses. Compare the cost savings for an average month on electrical @ .31kwh vs the Karno 0.12kwh. The explain the average usage/expense of NG for the Karno to power the home for the month. Give us a total cost estimation with Karno vs their current expenses. They're your parents, they won't mind!

22:48 $0.12 per kWh, at what cost is the natural gas being priced at to get that number?

Just two simple questions and I hope folks from Hyliion could answer directly. (no dodging the questions). 1. How much would the Karno generator cost to deploy (one unit)? 2. How much is fuel-to-power efficiency gain we are talking about? If the cost for deployment outweighs the money savings we could get by using the Karno generator, and we need more than five years (5y+) to recoup the cost of deployment before it could generate the real positive money savings. Then this product is not competitive at all, and I doubt that you could leverage this single product to become revenue-making and to save the Hyliion company.

20:12 So there are ICE generators that have been getting over 50% efficiency (54%) for fuel to AC electricity out for a decade now. So what does Karno bring to the game other than small increments‽ You are talking about how Karno’s combustor is totally fuel agnostic but gas turbine combustors that use hydrogen have to be specifically designed for hydrogen due to some of its unique properties. Also it is my understanding that liquid fuels have to be “vaporized” first before introduction to the “combustor” (as noted in other videos that the flame from liquid fuels looks totally different and appears to have “speckling” when burning liquid droplets that were not fully vaporized). Also how do you deal with the contaminations of “sour” natural gas that would be burned at a wellhead?

Modular architecture and almost zero maintenance due to air bearings are the biggest advantages, low noise and vibration, improvements and upgrades can be printed quickly instead of having to retool a production line. They can eventually use it with their hybrid technology once long haul (cross continent) shipping companies are pushed in the direction of very low emissions (H2 and RNG) instead of trying to continue trying to get a traditional ICE to pass changing emissions certifications, especially with its low NOx.

@@anydaynow01 All good points. I am not sure about the scalability of additive manufacturing but it does allow quicker design updates. The “reliability” does need to be validated as I wonder about some numerous issues with less than pure fuels being burnt in a combustor that has small and circuitous passages. Even gas turbine combustors burning jet fuel need cleaning and have corrosion problems. So time will tell. Also Cummins seems quite persistent with ICE with their new multi-fuel 15X series of engines. There are also European ICE engines that are effectively similar in overall efficiency to Karno running on RNG.

I deliver deisel fuel to alot of dairy farms....the milking barns are big. They all incorporate generators for primary or back up power that burn deisel . The cow manure that they displace is a very large quantity. Some of them have digestors on site that convert the methane from the manure to renewable natural gas. I'm assuming that Thomas is referring to this possible utilization for that rng produced on the farm to be used for onsite Karno power and / or to ship that rng to be used off site, making use of the methane produced from the manure. @Walking_Bear

In California the transportation methane fuel that is marketed as BIO is on average certified as being “Carbon Negative”. Dairy produced methane is almost significantly carbon negative. The NEGATIVE aspect of BIO CNG is due to counting the “AVOIDANCE” of releasing the methane that would normally be released (so book keeping). California has significant subsidies through LCFS credits for this fuel and has supported funding of the Anaerobic Digesters at dairies.

And other farm waste and solid waste from sewage treatment plants. It's sent to digesters to make methane (kind of like how capped land fills have to be vented since they constantly putting off methane). Companies like Clean Energy and some utilities are building them since the feed stock is essentially free and the fuel is at the worst carbon neutral and oftentimes considered carbon negative to some degree due to it being waste methane that would otherwise have been a greenhouse gas itself.

@@anydaynow01 It is actually IRONIC that a dairy that historically released more methane (normalized to something like methane released to the atmosphere per cow) will get a better carbon negative “certification” than a more progressive dairy that tried to capture some methane in the past. And with a more negative Carbon Intensity Certification Value it is priced higher (through credits). I have always thought that is a bit perverse.

Hoping for his next presentation to be stronger… This one seemed kinda thrown together with too many “umm” and “ah” during presenting. Don’t know if he was nervous, but he has had too many public speaking events to come off this poor… Still rooting for you Tom, but do better!
