This is a test of the 150 gr, 2 blade CLEAVER Broadhead, by Crimson Talon.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Cleaver posted in parenthesis as well.
Total CLEAVER 150gr Score: 81.71 = 8 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts +1 pt for exceptional flight)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Cleaver got 16 pts, plus will get 1 bonus point for extra good flight.
2. Cut Size (20%, 9.14 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.062"/2.5" x 7 = 2.98 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.062"/2.5" x 7 = 2.98 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.062"/2 x 6 = 3.19 pts)
3. Sharpness (20%, 18.53 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 225 grs=9.75/10=8.78 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +25 grs=9.5/10=8.55 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts) Use the Stay Sharp Guide C Sharpener.
4. Penetration (20%, 17.84 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(61 layers=7.84 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 18.9 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9/10=4.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8/10 = 2.4 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
+1 pt exceptional flight, +.5 pts for 15 degree rotation in gel.
Total Score: 81.91 pts = 8 Golden Arrows
Price = $10/head ($8.50/head with my discount code: LUSK15)
Grading Scale:
90-100 10 Golden Arrows
85-90 9
80-85 8
70-80 7
60-70 6

That is absolutely impressive!!!! When I seen the price of these the other day, I was interested, but wondered about durability. not knowing they made single bevels, this video is sweet. I’m sure to purchase some at this point for the light longbow. I’m not super worried about narrow cut, I’ve learned using kudu 100’s, that doesn’t matter as long as you sharpen them to perfection with no burr on them when finished. Even with a little back of a shot they will go down fast. Great work!

John once again, A+ review and I know very well on the "field testing", the testing was extensive and outstanding if not astonishing results. . This head is amazing,and after the 70 yard shot and kill on that huge boar hog, i'm ruined on which way to go for deer season,,,,the 150 like I had planned or the 125 after the hog long distance kill. I get the technology on bevel angle, but whenever I see a round hole exit, and witnessed the blood, I got all I need. I can't kill an animal with the book on physics, but I can with a head that performs like this. Dave and the people @ Crimson Talon ae a huge blessing to the bow hunting community. Giving us old school quality for an old school price point. Thank you John and Tank you Dave and Team Crimson Talon. This one is a winner in my book 100%.

These heads are awesome. ive used a slightly smaller one and very similar design made by bone broadheads that killed me 3 animals and they didn't go more than 100 yards total, but all were pass throughs. I believe that is key with short recoveries. The deer or hog barely feels anything and doesnt get disturbed with an arrow hanging off him. He may burst away from the noise but stops soon and then lays down since he doesnt see anything to make him run.

Great review John as always, this head held well, do you call these heads replaceable heads or fixed blade, ( just a question
@caseysmith544
@caseysmith544 2 жыл бұрын
Wel,l all blades that are not a mechanical or they fixed a mechanical to not move by most states that ban mechanical heads, they call them fixed. now as to a replaceable, few two blade broadheads without small bleader heads are often sold without replaceable heads as they consider the whole unit a fixed head, ones with bleader mini blades should be fixed. I however can't use single bevel in South Dakota, they did this a long long time ago to make it so people especially Native Americans off the reservations would not try to use a broadhead of stone in single bevel or a sharp edge, however the way they call a bevel they consider a m.media-amazon.com/images/I/317IMTJM30L._AC_SR320,320_.jpg this if both sides have the punched out part as a double bevel broadhead because the side is considered a bevel in South Dakota, at least nobody gets a ticket from the Game part of Game Fish & Parks for that unlike those using a single bevel provided the edge is sharp enough, whatever that means.
@michaelrosa5410
@michaelrosa5410 2 жыл бұрын
You shoot them, and resharpen them. As posted above,they come in a bit over on weight so future sharpening doesn't get them so far off the stated weight by variance. There isn't a head for the money that can out perform this head. Inspite of it's lower angle, you can witness the round hole on the exit. Every pig I killed with these has given me a round exit and i've shot some bigger pigs with thick shields and bones thru the shoulders.

How did you measure the angle? I bought some based on this review and mine measure 0.057" thick and 0.110" wide bevel, which gives 31 degrees. The angle doesn't look different than the ones you have though. In the Crimson Talon Croc video you say that the steel is brough to a hardness of 58, but when I test these I measure 47. Did you mean to say 48? Did they change their HT protocols? Thanks for the reviews!

For double blade I agree it does not matter as much but with a single blade, the lower side bevel can be an issue in both spin and durability but not when they use as thick a blade as this company does.

Thanks Casey. It would spin better and be even more durable at a steeper bevel...but it's quite effective as it is as well.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yes that would be scary how good that blade is that you describe. I bet some people fix this blade from Crimson Talon (Cleaver) using the bevel so each end has a dual bevel on the one side closer to the ferule is the slight bevel and a more pronounced bevel near the blade end that one could fix on this blade with a few options like a spinning wheel grinder, a table mounted belt sander, a table mounted vice and an angle grinder. Fixing the bevel that would be the fastest and easiest fix. For me the preferred choice is the Belt sander and some rough sandpaper then rest from there using the tools you have.

Lots to like here. Tough, penetrates well and it's inexpensive. However, IMO not a wide enough cut and not a steep enough bevel. I like more rotation in a single bevel broadhead. The rotation you get in something beveled more aggressively (Like the Helix) is amazing when you view the damage path in a deer. It will also snap bones like they're twigs. This broadhead cannot accomplish this to the same degree with the shallow bevel it uses. They should offer it in a 125 -150 gr 1 1/4'' - 1 3/8'' cut with a 40-degree bevel. With those mods, using the materials they have, at the price point they have, I'd bet they would sell very well.

So that round hole exit on the pig wasn't proof enough the head is somehow spinning to make a round hole proves anything to you ? I guess nothing will. $29 a pak of 3 ? Nobody touches this performance.

@@michaelrosa5410 Holes are dependent on many things including placement, angle of entry/angle of departure, movement & the list goes on & on. Along with rotation you need enough bevel on the blade to reliably break bones. This works well at 40 degrees or more

@@frankbrowning328 I’m not doubting physics because that’s stupidity to do. Bones breaking ? Do you wanna see this “23 mini bevel” break the SHOULDER thru the heart of a bemouth boar hog from 70 yards with a compound bow ? When a bow is tuned, and the head balanced, things work in unison and in doing so, wreck major damage. I’ve got a list of animals from both weights of this head and each was devastated. I don’t toy around with smaller animals either. These heads do damage as well as any head I’ve shot @ even triple the cost. Physics, logics and all, I’m talking real life situations not in physics and logics on paper. Go shoot a couple animals and call me a liar.

Idk did you see the 12ga. Slug sized exit hole!? Why exactly does it need to be wider? You could see your knock from your stand right? You don't need a 4" cut to kill efficiently. As you just proved. Paleo hunters rarely if ever put anything wider than 1" on an arrow and they were using rocks!

:) Well, my goal is to get a pass thru. But if I can get a larger cut while still getting a pass thru, then that's what I'm going to do. It doesn't matter much for a perfect shot. But if you're too high or too far back, then a wider cut helps a lot.
