This is a comparative test of 2 models of 150 gr VPA broadheads--the Classic Double Bevel & the New Single Bevel. Which one do you think will prevail as the winner of the this broadhead battle?

I want to explain a bit about the testing protocol that I'm using at this point in 2021.
I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention. I also have a different test for flight--shooting one field point and two broadheads at 40 yds to see how well they group. And then I have a new overall Lusk Grade that I assign to each head--they receive anywhere between Zero and Ten Golden Arrows.
Here is my sharpness scoring scale, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Testing Machine:
First of all, what are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.

John, you must have ESP! Today I just finished shooting the VPA double bevel along with the Iron Will Solid and Valkyrie Blood Eagle. All 150 Grain from Broadhead Connection. All flew well but the VPA was the winner. Shot right with my field points out to 50 yards. From a crossbow @ 360 fps. Think I'm going to try the Single Bevel though, especially after watching your video. I learned about broadhead connection from watching your videos and ordered the broadheads to test based on results from your videos. Even though you hadn't teste the VPA two blade yet, I thought it would fly well based on what I've learned from watching your tests. Thanks and great timing!

Wow, you have really upped your game on the broadhead tests since the last time I watched one of your videos. Great comparison. I like that you have a better way to measure the sharpness now. I am going to look into those single bevel heads now.

Good stuff John! VPA makes the best affordable heads on the market. Tough, accurate and manufactured 40 miles from my home in Ft. Wayne, Indiana USA. These single bevels are a breeze to sharpen and fly like missiles. Based on our testing, the VPA single bevel head is the frontrunner to be on the tip of our arrows for the 2021 Indiana deer season. Your testing and other sharpening content confirm that choice as the correct one.

Yeah, it's the same design as the Bishop Archery Scientific Method...very simple and very effective. Super easy to sharpen.

Curious to see a direction comparison of the VPA single bevel and the Iron Will single bevel. Both seem to be top notch regarding higher end SB broadheads. As always, excellent job John. Keep up the great work

I have to agree with you. The test was very fair for each type yet the single bevel slightly outperformed the double bevel. Either would be a great broadhead but after watching the video, given the choice I'd choose the single bevel.

Single bevel was the easy winner. The first time I watched one of these, I wasn’t sure what to think, but now it’s my go to favorite comparison videos. 👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you. I have since realized that the rotation of a single bevel adds an extremely minimal amount of total cut. I got a Physics Professor to give me a formula for it, and for 1" head that rotates 90 degrees (which none have ever done in gel), you get a total cut of .031" more.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures I used the SB on Cape Buffalo, my arrow setup is unconventional by today’s standards, total weight 578 gr with 17% FOC. I was fortunate to have both an entry and exit wound, there was no obvious rotation that I could see, yes it possibly could have rotated 180 degrees, but not likely. I wish I could post photos. It’s nice have real results to compare to the theories.

Two very awesome heads for sure. With the higher Rockwell rates on both either is a winner, IMO. The arrows and insert systems is very impressive too. 👍👍👀

Both good heads for sure. I'm a big fan of taking shots 30 yards and under. Without a doubt these heads would do complete pass thru shots.

Absolutely. And my goal with heads is to: 1. Get a pass thru and 2. Cut as much tissue as I can while getting that pass thru. That's why I like the single bevels, cause you're going to get more cut due to the rotation.

Can confirm they punch right through. Havent had any contact with heavy bone yet but not worried about it if I do. Pretty bizarre considering how the tip is basically flat but if you get those edges to a super sharp state it moves right through tissue like anything else. Smoked a doe on opening day with these singles and she went 30 and piled up. Edges take a while to get sharp but rehoning it after shooting her was a breeze they barely lost any

Did you do the rotation test with the double bevel? The owner of Day Six gear, was trying to explain to me that double bevel will rotate just as much as single bevels? I was trying to argue with him as I was shooting the Strickland helix and said they are hard to pull straight out of my foam targets, because of the rotation? He was try to tell me double bevels are superior heads and single bevel are essentially out dated. But he was very Adamant about the double bevel rotating just as much as a single bevel but I did not see that in your test I’m wondering what your opinion does a double bevel still rotate as much as a single barrel??

He's wrong. The arrow is rotating in flight from the fletching, and that can continue a bit--based on the medium it is penetrating thru. But the single bevel, provided the blade is thick enough, will promote even more rotation while the double will not. Just look at all my rotation tests of single bevels--they have varied from 8 degrees to 70 degrees based on the thickness, bevel angle, and cutting diameter.

I don’t really understand why people would want to deviate away from the single bevel. The whole single bevel premise is that is creates a huge amount of torque in rotation. Adding another bevel greatly reduces that rotational torque.

Well, the drawback to that argument is that that rotation also impedes forward momentum. That's the toss up.

Stay Sharp makes a specific sharpener for Single bevels, based on the bevel angle of the head.

Why do you think this single bevel held up better than tuffheads? I understand the bevel angle is steeper, but it’s only high carbon steel as opposed to s7

The bevel angle makes a HUGE difference. For example, with the Iron Wills, they first came out with a 27 degree bevel, and I tested them and saw quite a bit of edge chatter. So Bill re-worked them to 32 degrees and they held up much better. Those 5 degrees made a big difference. Now compare a 35 degree to a 20 degree and you can see the difference. Actually 45 degrees is optimal for durability and rotation, but they don't "feel" very sharp at that angle, so companies lower the angle in order to get the sharpness feel they desire. That being said, I do wonder if the S7 on the Tuffhead was flawed in hardening. I didn't expect them to bend like that.

Great test, amazing how much better the SB did. I’ve heard some say that single bevels tend to produce weaker blood trails than DB. That never made sense to me, have you found that to be true?

Blood trail is determined by many factors, and double vs single bevel plays very little role IMO. Shot placement and getting a pass through have far more of an affect on blood trails than whether or not one or two sides of the blade are sharpened.

That's a fallacy, Kelley. As Barak said below, blood trails is about 90% shot placement. Even with the exact same shot placement, animals vary in their specific anatomy and whether their lungs are full or empty makes a big difference too. So it's really impossible to "compare" blood trails.That being said, ALL THINGS EQUAL, If you cut more tissue and if you cut a wider hole, you'll get better blood. Again, ALL THINGS EQUAL, single bevels will make a better wound channel & cut more tissue, so will theoretically produce more blood letting. But again, it's mostly shot placement. I've taken hundreds of animals--I've had tiny two blades produce incredible blood trails and then huge 4 blade mechs produce zero blood.

Just realized there are two different “penetrators”. Those with a tanto tip like I have, and those without such as this video shows. I’d also like to point out that the VPA single bevel out performed the Iron Will Single Bevel you tested 3 months ago. This is a great contender for my next broadhead.

@@TheDonsRicheThe VPA SB is super easy to sharpen if you use diamond plates for your first couple of grits. I went DiaSharp 300, DiaSharp 600, King 1000, King 6000 and finish stropped on newspaper and it only took me about 5-7 minutes per head to get them straigt razor sharp.

I haven't seen their single bevels in person, but I know the VPA doibke bevels are dull as heck when they arrive and require sharpening before hunting. That could account for the high numbers on the sharpness test.

Yes and they take a minute since the steel is so hard. But very easy to bring back to sharp, smoked a doe opening day this year with one and it's back on my quiver after a few minutes on a stone and strop

Which 200 grain broadhead would you choose between VPA Single bevel or the Cutthroat single bevel with the Tanto tip?

Single bevel broadheads are awesome. I wonder why they chose not to incorporate a tanto tip. Does VPA manufacture Cutthroat broadheads?

I like the lack of a tanto tip--just like the Bishop Scientific Method. From the way it performed on the concrete, you can see it's not necessary if the bevel is steep enough and the blades are thick enough and the steel is strong enough. It makes resharpening a breeze.

Can you do a test on Bishop single bevel Pipeline SR Stainless steel in 200 gr, against the VPA single Bevel PTS in 200 gr and compare both thickness in blades and what bevel they have in degree. Thanks

Man, I'd really like to test them. I've tested the Deadmeat a lot, but not the Megameat. If someone sends me a pack, I'll gladly test them out. My budget for buying heads is overdrawn :)
