Travel back in time with me as I look through some older Meccano Hornby O Gauge items and have a bit of fun with them in my sitting room. A couple of these possibly date from the late 1920's, will they still be able to make their way around the tinplate tracks?
Also a quick update on the Tri-ang Princess Royal. Thanks for looking

An Unexpected Surprise. It Would Look Really Nice On Displays. Very Impressed With The Result From The Brake Fluid. If I Hadn't Seen The State That You Found The Princess In, I Wouldn't Have Thought It Was The Same Body 👍

The LMS Special Tank was a great Hornby Series seller. The chunky body and bigger wheels helps it to stand out from the * normal* steam loco dimensions Frank chose. That Southern tender loco is I think pre War as the design never appeared again after the factory re-opened in 1945. The emphasis was by then leaning strongly towards 00-gauge everything and away from 0-gauge items. As the new decade arrived, so the variety of accessories and sundries was deleted / discontinued. The clockwork track with the little slots in the middle of each sleeper was purpose-designed so that an enterprising lad could convert the entire system from 2 to 3 rail traction. Centre rails could be purchased on their own with insulating material and clips to keep the centre rail in place. Lots of fun.

Hello and thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. These are lovely items, I had an idea that the Southern Tender Loco was a little older. It's interesting to hear about that central rail. I bet a lot of young people longed to go from clockwork to electric. Best regards to you

This is a memory of where I began my hobby in the summer of 1945/6! You have some nice examples of pre and post WW2 stock. My pride and joy is a 4-4-2T in SR livery dating from 1938. The No2 special mech in this loco is IMHO the best ever produced by Hornby and being a governed mech delivers its power smoothly over the whole journey of a single wining. Lovely to see and hear your own enjoyment coming through the video. Happy Christmas Tony 🚂

Hello Tony, thanks for watching this. Your 4-4-2T loco sounds especially nice. I think that Meccano made some superb clockwork motors, both for Meccano Construction and Model Railway use. They really do run nicely. I have some Meccano clockwork motors with governor regulation and they do supply excellent power over the winding. It's good to hear you enjoyed the video, take care, all the best to you

Wow. I've never been into O Gauge but they are really something. 👍 More old relics that have plenty of life left in them. The Princess Royal has come up great. I think your proposal of painting the black and then varnishing is a good one. Will be good to see how you do with her. Mon from Monsville Railways

Hello Mon, I have definitely decided to just paint the black and add detail then varnish it with a semi gloss to match the tender. Hopefully it will turn out ok. Thanks for watching, all the best to you

My apologies for commenting on an old video, but hopefully I can add a bit of detail. The large LMS 0-4-0T numbered 6418 is a No 1 Special tank loco from 1929-1930, the Southern green 0-4-0 is a No 0 loco from 1933-1937. The smaller 0-4-0 tender loco is an M1, from between 1936-1941, and while the tender is an M1 tender, it's for the earlier type of M1 loco, and dates from 1926-1927. The 2 LMS 0-4-0 tanks without cylynders are M3 tank locos, from 1932-1936, the one with uncoupled 12 spoke wheels is as it originally left the factory, but the other, with 8 spoke wheels and coupling rods has been back for repair to Meccano Limited sometime after 1936, but before the factory ceased repair work after the start of the war. Hope this is of interest, and if you want to know more, I can firmly recommend the book, The Hornby O Gauge System by Chris and Julie Graebe, be sure to get a revised copy from 1994, as it has a lot of additional information.

That’s some wonderful looking tin plate goodies and they certainly do shift a bit. The Princess body has come up remarkably well and should look great once the black parts are re-done and some nice decals, I think your right a varnish should finish it of well.

More fabulous surprises from your vast collection of wonderful models. Although O gauge is not my scale there does seem to be some magical attraction in these items. There seems to be an innocence to them and yet they came out of tumultuous times. Amazing job on the Princess, I had wondered if it was going to be salvageable at all. Now I have high hopes. Hey Mr Snooze, I somehow missed this vid, you have some really nice items there mate. O gauge is somewhat of a rarity down here, the condition of your collection is fantastic. In regards to your Princess, I find a product called Long Life floor polish in High Gloss Finish is superior to varnish as it seems to condition and restore defects in the plastic as well. It is also easy removable with cloudy ammonia and water. Steven.

I don't think you mentioned this ... there's a reversing tab hanging down from some mechanisms, clearly visible on the LMS tank. You had two reversing tracks in the foreground of the outer loop - twist one of them to the upright position and any engine passing over switches into reverse. I imagine often followed by derailments at high speeds! Great to see tinplate O in such good condition and running. Thank you

Hello Mike, thank you for this interesting information. I saw the lever hanging down from the L.M.S. loco but didn't have time to investigate much. It seemed to do nothing when moved so I assume it is a little damaged, something to look at next time I get it out. I would think when working this could produce some exciting results on the track. Thanks for watching, best regards to you

The sharper curves were designed for M- Series clockwork engines. That’s why Hornbys larger locos don’t take too kindly to them. The distance between the driving wheels being the most important reason.

Hi there such a lovely video and you have some lovely items. Hornby produce some lovely trackside buildings too. Please can you tell me if and how you had to clean up some of the rails which look so new. My rails are rather faded now. I played with Hornby trains as a lad and still play with them at Xmas,,Perry
@MrSnooze

Good morning Perry, Some rails go duller than others, without re=plating its just a question of a gentle clean. The green side of a yellow kitchen sponge is not too abrasive and can give good results. Best regards to you

@@MrSnooze Thank you for your helpful reply to my query concerning Hornby clockwork track. In your video you mentioned some engines not staying on some smaller curved track. Hornby produced track of a one foot and also a two foot radius. One foot radius curves are more curved than the two foot ones and were intended for trainsets produced with smaller engines and smaller wagons. I have a battered small engine circa 196o with small cheap looking trucks and this engine just runs on the smaller radius track. Also your larger engines some of which are old would not run well on the smaller track. The quality more elaborate Hornby clockwork from the 1920s to the 1950s runs on the two door radius track. Hornby produced instructions which I have which gave me this information. Best wishes. Perry
