This time, I have got around to looking at the excellent late 1960's Tri-ang Hornby R.356S Winston Churchill Battle Of Britain Class Loco I got out of a long term storage box a few weeks ago. Let's see what is needed to bring it back to life and if I can get it running on the Vintage Tri-ang Super 4 Mainlines. Thanks for looking

I recall when a boy in the 1970s wrecking a Triang Jinty loco when I removed the wheels and trashed the bushes. Back in those days, there was no YT to neither warn me of the danger or tell me how to sort it, and my dad had to take it to a chap who repaired locos in order to get it fixed. I've never been a fan of the Spam Can, but you'd have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by watching you bring this old lady back to life. Amazing how it speeded up as it ran in.

I think most of us carried out fairly significant modifications to some of our toys back in the day. I too have definitely written off a few good toys which today would be nice to have, I had fun with them at the time so they certainly gave play value. Thanks for watching and all the best to you

Really enjoyed your video excellent to see these triang hornby legends running again. I myself after some 50 years of collecting and building layouts have now found myself over the last few years returning to these vintage trains they simply have so much charm and simplicity. The Tri-ang catalogues I find far more interesting and enjoyable than today's offerings. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Best wishes Steve.

It's good to hear you are enjoying the older items too. I feel that they represent an essence of model trains that seems somewhat diluted these days with the highly complicated modern offerings. Take care, all the best to you

I had a very similar issue with an old Wrenn 0-6-2 tank loco and managed to free up the hardened grease that had blocked the drive wheeels. Bought it covered in cobwebs and not running...10 minutes of cleaning and it runs like a dream (and I'm a total amateur on these things). Rescued a couple of old Tri-ang Princesses too. There's a real sense of achievement to see the old locos being brought back to running again. Great video.

Hi Mr. Snooze, The spacer makes a good electrical pick up under the smoke unit. It has a small 'pip' that faces down to the chassis and a hole to accept the securing screw from the TV suppressor through the smoke unit body ...

Great work getting her running again. 👍 The old X.04 motor is such a simple design and if looked after will go forever. My version of Winston Churchill has a damaged tender. The guy I bought it off used cellotape to hold the coal load in place in postage and hence the decals are now ruined. 🙄😕 Stay safe Mon

Great job.. Such loving care taken to restore this loco.. No rushing in with a Dremel's wire wheel, or pulling things apart unnecessarily? Very nice advice from a great repairman? I'm sure that years of life have been saved by such careful restoration?

Your Winston Churchill is indeed a smooth runner Jonathan. I have come across seized axles before but never on a Tri-ang model. It must be related to the lubricants used. The model is in superb condition other than the scuff marks from the plastic tray. I have one set that the tray shrank enough to split a passenger car end. I don't like to keep the models in those trays because of that. Regards, David.

Snooze (Wake up!), As usual really enjoyed your presentation, and that is probably a worry. That was an interesting comment re the ancient plastic insulators and keeping modern solvents clear. Again, my mind drifts back to old Ray Pearson who used to clean chassis by brushing kerosene where needed and letting air dry (no force drying lest the element providing the heat ignite the vapour - work outside). Have never experienced any problems, but that was mostly Wrenn and a long time ago. Would appreciate you sharing anything that comes up re the Peco lubricant, probably a replacement for their old 'Electrolube'. Corrosive properties are unlikely, but the very mention is of concern. A loco of mine was oiled with what is pretty much an interest area standard plastic compatible lubricant and exhibited pickup problems. A clean and relubrication with light machine oil fixed the problem. I have often wondered what Peco's product would do??? A suggestion re wiring: the wires on this thing are easily old enough to be fatigued and stiff, and so prone to high resistance and breakage; they were never real flexible anyway. Might be a idea, whilst the soldering iron is out, to replace them, possibly even with something as flexible as (I think) Faller wire. The way that loco moved its train into motion gives it away as a marvellous chess piece on an operational layout. That June 76 Model Railroader Magazine article 'Transistor Throttle with a Future' would make this model sing. If anyone needs advice on how to totally destroy a classic Minitrix motor, just ask. I have a cartoon catching a husband/wife taxidermy having just shut-up shop for the night; the caption as near as I remember 'It's so good knowing everything is completely stuffed' - It's like that.

Hello Pete, thanks for your excellent points. I have heard a few negatives about the Peco lubricant but so far I have nothing bad to report about it. I only use it on axles however. You make a good point about replacing the stiff old wire in the Tri-ang models. It is funny stuff but I haven't the heart to condemn it and using a good quality flux and solder I usually manage to keep it serviceable. I have some lovely supple silicone covered wire which would do so maybe I'll try it out on a model soon. Take care, all the best to you

Nice save and the Southern coaches are really nice. I have seen where other channels disable the synchro-smoke unit, and have wondered why the gear and plunger are left in. They must contribute to motor drag at low rpm and also some unwanted gear noise. It also think it's a good idea to make them inoperative for all sorts of reasons. 😊

Great video. R356S is one of my favourites; mine came from eBay, not as seized as yours but getting there. I'm on Peco code 100, so no magnetic help. I found some lead lining in the body helped to plant it a bit and adding tender pickups helped smooth running. I was inspired to get it after having the BoB "Manston", a more recent model. I was involved at the former RAF base which makes that locomotive a bit special. Best wishes.

Great to get these old engines working again! I found a job lot of 18 Hornby Dublo 3-rail wagons on the French equivalent of Gumtree a couple of weeks ago. Also included in the lot were a Hornby Dublo metal water crane, a classic Dublo signal box and two « non working » 2-rail locos : an early Triang Jinty with solid wheels and a missing chimney and a Lima 94xx pannier tank. It was all advertised for the princely sum of €20, I guess the chances of finding a buyer in France were pretty slim, so my generous offer of €15 was immediately accepted 😮, I couidn’t believe my luck. The wagons all cleaned up nicely even though they’d clearly been victims of damp. They got an overnight bath in penetrating oil to start with (most of the wheel sets were seized), the following day they all got a « shower » in contact cleaner! Drastic action, but once degreased and dried, all that was required was light lubrication of the axles , bogie and coupling pivots to have them all running well. As for the locos, after a good service similar to yours they both ran beautifully, especialy the Jinty. I was looking for guinea pigs for conversion to run on my 3-rail layout and really didn’t want to risk any members of my 2-rail fleet which are all boxed up waiting for me to retire in a couple of years and build them a new railway to run on ! Anyway, Jinty was fitted with a Marklin skate soldered to the motor pick up wire, and the 2-rail pick up itself earthed directly to the chassis. Amazingly I had a spare Triang pannier body in my scrapbox, so I now have a 3-rail 8750 pannier. Everything is reversible back to 2-rail if I want in the future. With its old rough solid wheels it also surprisingly has enough oomph to haul almost all the heavy diecast chassied wagons it came with around those tight Dublo 3-rail curves. The 94xx was easy too, but compared with the 8750 pannier, it couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding ! Pity as it’s a nice looking beast ! So next time I’m back in blighty I’ll be snapping up a few more Triang locos from the 50’s with those coarse wheels. Contrary to expectations, they run fine on Hornby Dublo 3-rail track even though it’s much finer than the Triang Standard, series 3 and Super Four track they were built for.

You certainly have been busy. What an excellent find that was. I wonder if you have ever thought of converting a Tri-ang Transcontinental type loco to 3 rail, I bet it would run well. It's great you are having fun with these conversions. Like you say you can always change them back if you want. It's all good fun. Take care, all the best to you

@@MrSnooze what I really want is a heavy freight loco, ideally a 3-rail 8F, but prices are too high. If I couid find a cheap 3-rail 8F tender I could « convert » my 2-rail 8F, but they are rarely to be found separately and also command high prices. I don’t think i’ve ever seen a tender chassis, or a set of Dublo plunger pickups for sale either…

THE TOY TRAIN BRIGADE !!!! But these things were "Kiddy toys", not models, when they were made. By 13 years old (1969) I was already using proper German made Fleischmann, Trix & Lilliput detailed MODELS (Because there were NO British outline commercial Model Ranges, only Toys). With powerful smooth mechanisms, on scratchbuilt finescale HO track. As German products wouldn't even run on British System 4 toy train set track, as it was far to coarse & crude !!!

Hello and thanks for watching. These are toy trains and indeed bear no comparison to the items you were lucky enough to have from the likes of Fleischmann etc. They were crude and relatively inexpensive but made to last and that's proved by them still providing fun today. Tri-ang Super 4 is a thing of it's time but there are a few of us around that still like to enjoy what Tri-ang Hornby had to offer in the 1950's 60's and 70's. Take care, all the best to you
