How to Break in New Figure Skates TOP TIPS! For figure skates, ice skates, hockey skates, etc. For clarification - don't heat mold edea skates!!! More at www.coachmaryfigureskating.com. #figureskating #iceskating #adultskater
1. Heat mold
2. Wear skates in the house with guards 20-30 minutes at a time to help the break in process
3. Bunga pads, bandages, mole skin for friction/sore spots
4. Punch out skates in really tight spots
5. For the first few skates - tie slightly loose, up to 2nd or 3rd hook from the top so ankles can flex more to break in
6. FIRST DAY ON ICE - lots of laps, edges, bending like strokes, crossovers, simple jumps
7. Hairdryer, heater before skating
8. Go back to the skate shop if any pain out of proportion!

Thank you for talking about it. Breaking into new skates is super annoying and painful. One thing I want to point out! You can't heat all skates. Edea skates are made from carbon fiber and if you heat them up too fast they will crack!

I have been doing all these tips, and my skates are slowly feeling better. I'm in the process of breaking in new boots as well as new blades. I'm getting a blister on my right big toe joint where I have a bunion. I had them heat molded and punched, but getting it done again. I also wear silicone gel pads, which helps tremendously! Thanks for these tips.

These are going to be helpful! I just got my first pair of proper figure skates (I'm taking group lessons as adult beginner) and I won't get on ice until August (if even)and the lessons start in September, so I am kinda scared the new boot and blade will slow me down (going from complete recreational to Jackson Artiste, I know they're not exactly professional, but it's a big jump for me), so wearing them around the house from time to time might help to at least get used to the boot before the lessons start. I already like that they have super wide toebox because I have wide feet and bad arch and my old skates have been killing me evey single skate session. But they're so different, both the boot and the blade, I am kinda scared what skating in them will be like 🫣

i wish i had seen this video two days ago! skated a full hard class session with my new hard skates fully laced, didn’t feel too bad but when i took them off the top of my foot and ankle were completely numb 😞 still having some tingles and heat 12 hrs later. i wish the skate shop had told me about leaving the top undone. i got some lace bite pads and will leave the top undone from here on out, i hope this doesn’t mean i can’t wear these boots or that i damaged my feet 😣😢😢

Hi coach, I am waiting for my new overtures to arrive. Now I use Jackson soft skates which only took 1 session to become comfortable (realised months later I have 1 size bigger oops). How often and for how long can I heat the new boots with a hair dryer?

Ok so my skates are Jackson Mistiques and they never tie tight enough. It doesnt matter who ties them or how tight, there is always an inch or two of space in the ankle, and in between the toungue and where the laces start on the sides, there is always a few cm of space there too. Any tips on how to tie them tighter? btw I will probably try a heat mold. Thanks!

Hi there! Are the skates too large in general? I recommend talking to your local pro shop as 1-2 inches seems like a lot. Good luck!

Nathalya Hammond hello 😄. To be honest I don’t quite remember. My comment was over a month ago and I learnt a lot in that time. What your probably experiencing right now is break pain. Basically your feet are getting used to the skates. If you got your feet measured and got the right size then you should be good. It took me a while to get used to them but eventually I did. It would hurt really bad until it got easier and easier:). For me the pain was just different :).

C J Yes, they have to be proffesionally sharpened! If they aren’t, you’ll slip around. If they are sharpened incorrectly, you’ll have trouble skating.

So I don’t exactly have access to a place near enough to me that I can heat mold my skates. Is it okay to use my hairdryer or heater to heat mold them or should I keep looking?
@1chienandalou
@1chienandalou 2 жыл бұрын
You should read the instructions very carefully about exactly what temperature it needs to be heated to. You can use a hairdryer or heater if you don’t put it too close without too many problems I would guess but every brand would be different . Some people actually use their oven. The skate shop basically has a little oven that works at a relatively low temperature so if you know what temperature it is you could do the same thing but don’t make any guesswork and find out exactly what the temperature is. However, I would recommend finding a place because the way that they tired very tight after they heat the material, The skate tech would know best and they would have a lot more strength to do it and You might be pulling it at a different angle and also they can punch out different areas to accommodate prominent bones bunions etc.

@@janniekekarma3587 honestly this may not be the most helpful advice, but it really just takes getting used to. compared to my old jackson skates the edeas are a lot more arched so it took a while for me to get accustomed. what i did was skate for about 10-20 minutes until it became painful then have a break for 5 minutes and loosen the skates, i would just do this for the whole session and it seemed to work!
