Rimuru is actually surprisingly pretty calculating at times and will forgive others only if it is in his best interest to do so most of the time (I.e. king of Falmouth, Mjuran). But Rimuru does have problems forgiving/being lenient with those from his own world and/or associated with Shizue. I think the LN does a much better job of portraying this... Spoiler: ...as it even has points where Rimuru thinks that he will straight up kill any subordinates who betray him. Kind of like luminous did in the last episode 🤣

Not sure of the volume but one of the eastern empire arc books sometime around when he is upgrading people to demon lords. I think he also has some thoughts along those lines prior to being demon lord too. But this one I am very unsure of.

only reason I can think they didn't go with devil is worrying about some of the christian groups getting wind of it and having a reaction to it, or because they came up with the translation at the end of season 1 and with out the light novels or material for season 2 at the time didn't have the context clues to go with devil and picked sorcerer cause of all the magic he was using at the end of s1. Be interesting to see which translation the light novels go with if they will use sorcerer like the anime or devil like fans keep suggesting as it seems to fit better

@@xtroguyver i just hope localization group dont botch the original meaning of the word cuz ive seen too much of those already. most often times it's for the opposite where Majin is translated into Demon-man but written as Magician instead but this time Majin is correctly written as Demon-man but the localizer go out of their way to change it into Magician/Sorcerer instead

this is just my guess, but i think they translated "ma" as "mahou" as in magic , so ma-jin become magic man, and it become sorcerer . name or title is always very hard to translate . and magic man do make some sense since he use magic most of the time.

I hope they won't butcher his internal monologue too much in next season. I liked how WN showed his views on fairness in the world.

He does not want to kill them because he wants to still trade with them, but hes not past killing if he must, but again he also does not want to burn that chance to open up trade, hes killed humans that have done him dirty.

The difference is that Rimuru would feel guilty as he kills, and any reason he would think of to spare his enemies is based on "It's not nice to kill people" morality (In the anime at least.) Makoto does not give an actual shit. The only reason he rocket punched the giant dude away and let Rona go with a warning is that he does not want to completely destroy diplomatic relations with the Demon race. The shit is even crazier with Sophia because at that point her efforts to "fight" are on the border of being sad and pathetic, so yeah he does not mind letting her go as doing so is simply less effort than slaughtering her. But make no mistake, when Sophia forces his hand, Makoto will do the deed and then simply walk away, like crushing a mosquito trying to bite. He won't try to justify his actions to himself or angst about doing things another way or feel guilty about ending a life, he'll simply kill a bitch and move on with his day.

In truth thats the darkest Rimy has gone and has never gone back down that path, even with some of the volumes I have read hes not gone down that path, hes kind of let some people walk all over him a little.

@@ssarellas Did you forget that army- no, the TWO armies (Human and Demon) that Makoto annihilated? Where he traumatized Lancer and Sophia and made a fucking lake? The massacre that titled him "Majin" in the first place? Yeah, Makoto has probably matched that body count and has likely gone beyond. And like I said, the difference is how these two characters regard their atrocities. If you confront Rimuru on on his genocide he's say that he did what he had to do. If you do the same for Makoto (and remind him that yes, he was the one who did it,) he'll shrug and say a half-ass apology, in a way that makes it obvious that he has no idea what he's apologizing for.

I am anime only too. What I can recall is that he destroyed armies from both the demon and human side. Makoto did not remember he made that disaster because after he unleashed the arrow, I think he passed out. At the start of this season, they showed Tomoe and Mio trying to revive him. Mio was a wreck because she thought he was dead. It was not clarified how he actually ended up like that. He looked fine when he fired the arrow, not counting the missing fingers.

He teleported and passed out right after because of the blood loss and all the mana he used in the fight. The scene where Mio was healing him in s2 was right after he got back. Emma and Mio healed him, which also regenerated his fingers.

I am WN reader and I confirm that you are right. Sorcerer is technically correct translation but it doesn't cover even half of the meaning his nickname has. The way it was translated in the WN "Devil" is technically incorrect but it conveys meaning much better. This nickname was created for him by those who saw him during battle for fort stella. The man Tomoe was questioning(ep5) about what happened said that he punishes them for straying from right path which very well fits calling him a devil.(except name devil everything here is information you can get from anime)

I'm not going to tell you that in WN he is completely different but anime misses a lot of internal dialogue and shows only action which makes everything look more light-hearted. Makoto isn't evil. I would describe him as kind but not good. If there is someone needing help right in front of him he won't hesitate to help but he just doesn't go out of his way to search for people who need help and he definitely doesn't have mercy for his enemies(this created a few very satisfying scenes). I would recommend you to after this season finishes read the next arc in WN. It shows how he is perceived by those who know his strength and his way of thinking. It also expands and clashes way of thinking of different characters(including Makoto) about what is correct and what is right. 'Can't I just wait for season 3?' you probably think. Yes you can, but I'm 80% sure anime will butcher all the nuance and internal dialogue from this arc. It would be better to just read WN from the beginning but just this arc would be fine to give you sense of what to expect from Makoto. If you want to give it a try then read basically the whole next arc. Unfortunately, the part I meant is chapters 204-213 but arc starts at 172(anime may not reach end of previous arc so possibly from chapter 168. 204-213 is what I was talking about but there is important context in chapters 168-176 and 183-192. The best would be to read all but I would say this is minimum that allows not to miss important context in 204-213.(also there is veeery satisfying scene in 178-179 so you may want to read that too) So, yeah, that's a lot but if you like characters with dubious morality I think you will like it.
