Ten years ago, I was diagnosed with an uncommon type of lymphoma and during my 3+ years of treatment that followed, I was referred to Make-A-Wish Illinois. Eventually, I was granted an amazing wish to visit San Francisco with my family to see a Warriors playoff game, and also tour places like Alcatraz, the Redwood Forest and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Fast forward to several months ago, when I received a flyer in the mail for Wish Ball 2021, which is one of the annual fundraisers held by Make-A-Wish Illinois. On the flyer was a big picture of Steve Martin, co-host of this year’s event. While most people know Steve Martin primarily as an actor/comedian, I’ve always thought of him as a banjo player, especially since I started to teach myself to play banjo a few years ago. I was immediately struck by the coincidence: I’m a Make-A-Wish alum, Steve Martin is hosting the Wish Ball, and we both are passionate about playing banjo, (not to mention we also share the same last name).
I have spoken at charity events in the past, and each year I either try to raise money for pediatric cancer research or for non-profits that support kids with cancer. This year seemed like the perfect opportunity to give back to another organization that did so much for me and my family while I was going through treatment. I decided to reach out to Make-A-Wish Illinois and offer to participate in Wish Ball 2021, by playing banjo and/or sharing how much my wish meant to me, or helping in any other way.
Well, Make-A-Wish responded to my email and this video captures the finale of their live-streamed event. I was honored to share my story and also had an amazing experience with Steve Martin, who was so generous with his time, as well as sincere and funny in his interactions with all of the Wish kids.
If you enjoy hearing my wish story and our duet, please consider making a donation to Make-A-Wish Illinois so they can continue to grant wishes, which provide hope and support to so many kids when they need it most... wish.org/illinois
Thanks!
