Here are the differences between the kindergarten, first grade, and second grade levels of handwriting without tears. See what the differences are, a brief flip through of each hand writing without tears level, and why we chose to begin one grade level down for each kid.
Ill also show you how to use the chalkboards when teaching letter formation with Hand Writing Without Tears! Hopefully this review of HWT will help you pick the right level and know what to use to get started.
Note, I didn’t mention in the video but we didn’t use the teacher’s guide for any of these as I had read many reviews saying it’s not necessary and I wanted it to be super open and go.

You are welcome! You can’t go wrong going back a level because they’ll speed through it, but it’s nice to know what you are ordering by being able to see inside.

Thank you for making this video. I was going to get a few workbooks from the Dollar Store since I could not see what these books entailed. Your video was very helpful and I have decided to give this a shot for my first, soon to be second grader this summer to get him ready for second grade!

You're welcome! I'm surprised there aren't great official examples from the company or more examples on KZfaq. Hope you like it!

Thank you so much for this video!!! It really helped me decide which level to get. I especially liked your advice to get the level below if you're unsure. My girls hate handwriting and really need help with their grasp, so I'm looking forward to getting this for them.

Hope you find the best level! I found my kids flew through multiple pages (and the easier levels I bought) till they got to the right difficulty for their ability. I’m on the end of start easy though rather than save money and possibly start something too hard.

Thank you for this. We’re getting our 1st grade book in the mail today. We have never used HWOT for any of my kids. I think my son will do just fine with it.

Is there a teacher manual for this? How do you know what to tell the child to write on the “Listen and write” section?

There is a teachers guide, but I decided not to get any based on reviews I’d read. There are instructions for each page so you’ll know what to do. For the listen and write section I think you are asking about, it’s usually on a group of letters that all start with the same motion, like “magic c” letters for example. So you just call out randomly the handful of letters they’d worked on that lesson and they practice writing it down. So that’s one thing that’s not independent in here. Hope that helps!

I noticed with the numbers page your daughter started out writing the 4’s the way the book instructs but then transitioned to writing them, what I would call, the normal way. Did she do this naturally or did you instruct her to do so? It was the first thing I saw when I ordered the book and I wondered about having my own daughter write the number 4 the way I do and not the way the book teaches.

Handwriting without tears has the 4’s written one way, and she just likes writing them the other “fancy way” that they are written in type, or books she sees. She kind of taught herself to do that and I let her choose! I don’t think it matters much to me so long as it’s legible.

My daughter is having a hard time with writing and holding her pencil right

How old is she? Handwriting without tears goes over pencil grip. Also take into account where she is developmentally…we took a step back from writing when my son was 6 or so and did lots of legos, play doh, and hand strengthening play that allowed him to come back to handwriting with much stronger hands and less frustration! He didn’t tire as easily and handwriting was much more doable after that.
