Complex Contoured Railing: Setting railing and post heights

Determine the height of the post and the setting of the railing on this complicated contoured railing build so that the balusters and handrail brackets all work in their proper places. A few complications and corrections had to be made along the way. The railing, post and balusters were purchased by the homeowners quite a while ago from a company that is no longer in business - so there's no room for error.

Thanks for making these videos and showing your mistakes. I think there’s more to be learned from watching someone resolve mistakes than seeing them do a project seamlessly.

I appreciate your comments.. I also appreciate when other makers show their mistakes. Truth is we all make them, but some won't admit it. Usually my mistakes come from not focusing enough; or overthinking. In both cases you can miss the obvious. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Lots more to come. Cheers, Scott

I'm exactly the same way. When I see a creator fix something they messed up or overlooked it really helps and that guy instantly has credibility. Thank you again Dan! Have a good summer. Scott

Another good video done by a legit Working Man in real world conditions. my Uncle Bill decades ago told me “all carpenters make mistakes the good ones can fix it!” keep up the good work and don’t be shy from showing a lot of the details. That’s the good stuff. By the way, I wish I could work in my socks sometimes. jk

Thank you Joseph. And yes that is a safety violation for sure. Maybe they'll come out with a steel-toed Crock that I can wear in houses. Thank you for the encouragement. I know the channels I follow are guys that know what they are doing and explain the little tricks. Cheers, Scott

Have you ever put bubble levels on your drills? I bought a bunch on Amazon and was thinking of doing this so that I can drill plumb or level holes. Great video! It's nice to see that others in the industry do things similarly! I recently purchased a Jessem Doweling jig, and have made some nice fastener-free handrail connections. Four or five dowels glued up make connections rock solid. Time consuming, but inexpensive!

I have certainly thought about level bubbles on my drills. Not sure if there's a surface on the drill exactly parallel with the drill bit/chuck. I am predicting someone will come out with that soon because so many trades-people have that need. I think the Jessem jig looks really good. Actually more solid and durable than the Lamello Invis jig. That said the magnet system on the Invis is really great. Glad you like the video and good to hear from you. Cheers, Scott

Nice video again Scott. I like your use of the green tape to make all your notes on. It's hard to read writing on the blue tape. You have a nice work flow. Not sure if you realize this or not, but it looks like your newel was an intermediate newel with a longer top block. A starting newel's top block measures only about 5" which leaves the handrail about an 1" down from the top with an 1" below. It tends to looks a lot better.

Thank you for your positive comment and your wisdom. This is one of those jobs where the customer bought all the materials for this project ahead of time - far before I become involved. To make things more complicated, the supplier went out of business and no more stock was available (like longer balusters). Hence I had to work with what I had. I didn't explain this in the video as I thought it would sound like an excuse. Perhaps I will mention some of these factors in my next video. Things are so much better if the contractor either purchases all the materials - or is at least consulted ahead of time. Cheers, Scott

Yep. I've been there too. I wondered if that might have been the case but didn't know. Similar things have happened to me too and you just have to run with it and make it work for the customer. You did the right thing.@@scottearlsmithFTC

@@t.e.1189 Thank you. I've recently learned that the only local supplier we have will no longer stock the contoured railings and fittings. So that will likely be a thing of the past. (Until the trends change.) Scott
