So many other trades demand crisp 90 degree angle finishes to convince the end customer that it was crafted by a competent journeyman. Competent smithing shows us that a different edge finish both keeps the customer safe from rough or sharp edges, and shows another level of craftsmanship. Horses for courses, I like the bevelled edges. There is a very definite reason for them.

You could always add a third leg since you are using welded connections for cup and plate to add both stability and more opportunity for chisel work.

If you forged a horn like a snow plow off the peak of the angle iron at the base, it may give you that little bit of resistance you need to avoid tipping. Either way, thanks for the video!

Looks great, John. How about welding the drip plate near the corner with it cantilevered over the base? That would give it more stability and go with the modern theme. Bill

Hey John! I quite like this design, and would like to try my own take on it when I get the chance. Might try fullering in the bottom of the cup, and using the top “spike” of the angle to rivet the pieces together. Cool idea!

I really like that pine tar finish! I think, because its welded up, if you attached the candle cup and drip plate off center, so it was cantilevered back over the center of the angle iron, it would look really neat and help the tipping issue.

Hi John, you have a good point, heavy base to keep from tipping. I am working on a candle stick holder, and had second thoughts about a heavy base. I have several ruff castings that look like the nose piece on a manual transmission, are they to heavy? If you don't pick them up, you will never know. Thanks for the tip on tipping over, heavier is better. 👍🔥⚒

John, very interesting project. I think the candle holder came out very nice. I am a pebble of sand, and you are an entire beach when it comes to blacksmithing and being artistic. My thought "artistically" would be to plan for any type or size candle, maybe dish the square plate a bit, no pipe, and make the tip of the angle iron protrude through 1/2 an inch to be a spike for a candle. You could still weld inthat recess you made. Just thinking out loud. Army SE Oregon

John, what about offsetting the hole for mounting the candle baseplate to the angle iron off to one corner - cantilever the candle over the angle - it would have a modern look and be far less tippy with the center of mass over the space between the angle sides. You probably would want to do something other that MIG weld it since that joint would no longer be hidden under the candle.
@BlackBearForge

That thought did occur to me, but it wasn't the look I was going for on this piece. It would be worth a try though.

What about putting your floor plate outside the angle iron instead of within it? I'm thinking if someone bumps it, their arm will outweigh the candle. Would that make it slide instead of tip? For another candle, what if it was rotated, and one side of the angle iron was the bottom?

One of the things I really like about your channel, John, is your willingness to experiment on camera. It's bolder than a lot of the makers out there. I realize you're very fond of ornamental chisel work, but have you ever considered hand engraving as another option? It's far more time consuming (and would be a new skill for you, I think), but you can get much cleaner lines and curves with some practice. Just a thought.

@@BlackBearForge I've used pine tar on rope and wood. It's the best thing for tool handles, imo. Never have baked it on, though. It might be a fun exercise to simply coat a plate of metal and hang it outside to see how well it ages over time.

You would need a candle cup with a bottom and a hole to match the one in the plate. Then you would rivet (hard to do inside the cup) or go with a threaded contection

What is the kind of gloves that you use to keep from burning your hands, but look fairly thin? I have been using welding gloves, which do okay for a time, but wear holes in a couple of places on a finger and thumb. Also, my newest welding gloves are so thick it hurts my hand to forge with them on, I think because it forces me to use a larger grip. Thank you!
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
Most of the time avoid gloves in the shop because they can cause their own problems. But when working with the angle grinder in this video i am wearing leather work gloves. When using the belt grinder it looks like Nitrile cut resistant gloves. Both are good for protecting from the grinding sparks, but neither will protect from high heat if you grab hot material.
