I honestly hope that the Chen parents can change their viewpoint on ghosts because of their children, Ollie and June. The Chen parents are just good people who have had bad experiences with ghosts.

Doesn’t it feel like Ollie went through the five stages of grief in the show. 1st Denial🚫: He denied ghosts being good in frightmares despite knowing it was probably true. 2nd Anger💢: He started interrogating scratch and trying to prove his point because he was mad. 3rd Bargaining🤝: He made a deal with molly to let scratch free in order to stop the frightmares and save his family. 4th Depression😭: He breaks down due to all his guilt about hunting innocent ghosts and almost hurting scratch. 5th Acceptance😊: He realizes with the help of molly, scratch, and Libby that he can’t change his past but he can try better in the future.

Reuben and Esther aren't bad people. It just shows how one bad experience can lead to people hating on a particular group of people, and mob mentality only helps to validate these hateful mentalities. It's cool seeing The Ghost and Molly McGee tackle the issue. Thanks for the great video!

It's long been said that children are sometimes smarter and/or more mature than their parents and the Chen Siblings certainly prove that HERE

I hope to see by the season 2 finale that Ruben and Esther realize that not all ghosts are bad. At least their kids found out the truth about ghosts and how some of them aren't evil as they thought.

Ollie and June are great. No one can convince me otherwise

I genuinely think the Chen’s storyline has ramped up and become a great aspect of season 2. Ollie, admittedly, started kinda feeling bland and just like an idealized love interest. But as the show has gone on, he’s become a more endearingly anxious and down to earth character, while still having his own entertaining quirks in his character. I might even go to say, through his arc, Ollie’s become a top five character in the show for me. But to the topic at hand, I appreciate how Ollie’s story and the Chens as a whole have played out. It feels like a more fleshed out look at “Ghosts and Humans can’t be friends” conflict from the season 1 finale, through the human world side of the show. It’s endeared us to these characters as well, with Ollie having the strongest arc of coming to grips with where he was wrong as I mentioned already, and June getting some real great moments to shine as she learned the same way Ollie did. I’m sure Reuben and Esther will eventually come around, too, and I look forward to that, so we can get some character moments with them, same as Ollie and June. Prejudice and bigotry are ugly things, but people can always learn and admit to their wrongdoings, and these two characters absolutely can as well. (Also, Ollie and Scratch team up episode, please? Scratch and Libby episodes are always a treat, we need the other Ghost Friend and Scratch to have an episode just between them.)

I personally haven't had any prior experience with something similar to what June and Ollie have going on, but I still love how this show is willing to tackle these kinds of topics, also the Chen siblings are 2 of my favorite characters lol

I love how interesting the conflict is between them and their parents as this is something that families experience in real life where the beliefs of the parent sometimes conflict with those of the child but I do think they will learn eventually that not every single ghost is bad even if it may be difficult.

My theory for how Ruben and Esther will realize they've been wrong is that their ghost-hunting will put one or both of their kids in danger and the only reason that said danger doesn't wind up lethal or at least permanently damaging is because Scratch and other friendly ghosts openly interfere because since Ollie and June are important to the McGee siblings, they're important to the ghosts who have befriended and adopted the McGee family. I also appreciate that the plotline with the Chens makes the point that anyone and everyone can fall victim to prejudicial thinking, even if they're openminded and/or supportive in other areas (see how the Chen parents accept and appreciate June's self-expression, which is obviously impacted by her autism) or even fall into a group that can be subject to prejudice.

I loved the development of Ollie and June, I thought it was one of the most compelling things we had this season. I'm still hoping for a third, because I would like to see the Chens again in new adventures.

Really REALLY fantastic video, Chandler. Honestly, while I do wish we could've gotten just a biiiiit more time with the Chens (June, especially), I do really admire what the TGAMM crew tried to do with them and - as you said - how it relates to the show's themes of kindness, friendship and spreading joy instead of misery. I have to wonder though how much Ruben genuinely hates ghosts and how much he just wants fame and praise like that forum guy and other people in the Ghost-Hunting Community, given that he focuses so much on proving ghosts exists and gaining KZfaq fame in addition to trying to 'saving the world from them'. That in itself could be interesting to dive into, if the show has the time to do so.

I feel like, because it's a Disney show and the Chen's are good people, they will absolutely change their mind on ghosts , at least eventually. But i think it would be really interesting if they actually made them /never/ change their view, because I feel like a lot of people would relate. Then again,it's probably more healing for people in the same situation to see them come around and accept the ghosts. 🤷🏼‍♀️💘

I used to be very religious and anti-LGBT+. After learning more, and allowing myself to think freely, I left religion and accepted that I'm trans myself. This is why Ollie's arc really resonated with me. It's great to see this experience represented on television. Before this gets too long, I just wanna say that this video is amazing and that this has become one of my favorite channels on YT.

I love the direction they’re taking the Chens. It shows that you shouldn’t believe everything that someone tells you, even if they think it’s the correct answer. You should learn and understand it yourself and form your own beliefs! I enjoyed the video Chandler! 😁

I love this episode, June finally finds out about Scratch.

the biggest of all stubbornness people will have the hardest or perhaps is never able to change, but the most open minded have a possibility to change what they see around the world. I still want to know why the Chens believe this is the case with ghosts because for all we know, Mr. Chen could have met a friendly ghost like Molly but unlike Molly who is kind to Scratch from the start...despite being cursed with the ghost of course, he might have the opposite reaction when he first seen a ghost.

Another A+ analysis of Ollie and the Chens. The way Ollie's arc is presented actually reminds me a bit of the King of the Hill episode where we first meet Kahn. Hank, like Ollie, is ignorant towards another group (Asians, not ghosts) and makes some prejudiced assumptions about them, but the episode also makes it clear that he's not a bad person (i.e. inviting Kahn's family over to his place for a welcoming dinner party) and he does learn the error of his ways. Also like with the Chens, it's the kids who prove wiser than the adults - Bobby and Connie become fast friends, unlike Hank and Kahn. As controversial as this probably is to say in this day and age, I like that both KotH and TGAMM gave us likeable characters who are fundamentally good/decent people BUT also have unchallenged prejudices. We all have such prejudices, and depicting non-evil/hatable characters with them can help us to think a little more about ours instead of just letting us feel comfy knowing we can't possibly be prejudiced because we aren't evil. I quote a great video on KotH's coverage of the topic. "A lot of shows address racism by making blatantly racist characters for us to hate, but King of the Hill addressed racism on a much broader scale with a lot more nuance. While other shows give us characters that are so overtly racist, the viewer can comfortable separate ourselves from them and feel good about ourselves, King of the Hill presents us characters we can't help but feel love and attachment to. And us seeing them deal with internalized racism and ignorance forces the viewer to look in the mirror ourselves and figure out what we can improve on to be better people." I think the connections one can make with Ollie and his family here are interesting. Also, this is like the third topic covered by both The Ghost and Molly McGee and King of the Hill - both also did periods ("A Period Piece" for TGAMM and "Aisle 8A" for KotH) and not being "Asian" enough ("100% Molly McGee" for TGAMM and "Orange You Glad I Did Say Banana" for KotH). And all of them involve Kahn or his family.

Started watching this show with my kids because of your videos.

I think Esther is still redeemable, but I don’t think Ruben is. He is pretty much the source of the ghost hatred right now (since we still don’t know much about Esther’s backstory) and I feel like the way his ghost-hating emotions are represented in episodes like Frightmares on Main Street and Welcome to NecroComic-Con.

Oof. This one hurt. Your explanation reminded me a lot of my family. One of my cousins calls the problem 'generational demons', but so much frustration and hurt passes from the parent to the child in my case. I'll keep this brief unless we meet on Discord, but I don't think my dad can be saved and I don't think my mom can stand for herself against it. And on top of that, there's a subtle prejudice against autistic people reflected in how my family (including three of my siblings) treats me. I think my youngest sister has the best chance of breaking the cycle. She's a natural leader and a sure go-getter, and doesn't let anything get the best of her. Me? I could get out if I'm lucky, but not unscathed. The best case scenario for me is someone does find me and help me out, and then I wouldn't hate the world as much as I do.

I wish we learned more about Ruben and Esther before the finale. Especially, since I wished that Esther would have been willing to respect the kids’ decision about change in attitude towards ghosts. So, you can imagined my disappointment when this Episode came around.

Inherited prejudice is a topic that should be more addressed, so this is a good way of showing it. I just know that the Chens will stop being ghost hunters by the end of the season.

Bill & Bob need to make a spinoff show to this.

Honestly my biggest gripe with the Chen's storyline is that Reuben, Esther and June Don't have a lot of screentime during this season. It's one of the biggest gripes I have with Season 2 and ever since Necorocomic-Con because it felt like They should've been in more episodes that aren't cameos. I'm glad they did something with June recently but it cements my point that it feels too little too late. I think this is why with Season 2, my favorite parts of the season come from the episodic episodes instead of the story driven ones. That said I do agree, that the concept of the Chen's misunderstanding ghosts thinking they're bad but at the same time, they are nice people is a great idea and despite my gripes with the Chen's storyline, I think I think this aspect is done well. I enjoyed the video Chandler and while I know you might disagree with what I said, I did enjoy listening to why the Chen's storyline works for you. Great video.

I'd be lying if I said this video made an Ollie fan out of me (I'm lukewarm towards him at best), but I always thought him coming to terms with ghosts not being this inherently evil entity that needed to be terminated was the best thing going for him, and you opened my eyes to how mature and deep the show handled it.

I know it won’t happen but I imagine that the Chens might either become villains or at least become very antagonistic for a short time because they feel that Molly and Scratch turned their kids against them.

The Phantom canister was a tool designed for ghost hunting, but it does not work, so here's my plan to both make it work and turn it into a ghost Rehabilitation device instead, step one implants a hologram tube into the canister to project a ghost's Ideal World to calm them down, step two how to get the ghost into the Hologram 2 well June is studying ectoplasm and the canister worked when scratch was possessing it so maybe when June is finished with her studies of ectoplasm she could use it to make artificial ghosts and have those possess the canisters pulling other ghosts in and that's my plan for turning the Phantom canister into a ghost Rehabilitation device that actually works!!! If someone were to use it for evil the artificial ghost will burn itself and the canister after freeing the captured ghost as such only someone who isn't a ghost hunter can use it you know what is a safety measuring all in case Ruben and Esther finding the modified canister an attempt to use it for ghost hunting.

The Chen’s story is a very thinly veiled allegory of racial bigotry to the point that it’s less funny and more than a bit uncomfortable to watch. But that seems to the brilliance of the writing as it’s a deep dive into a heavy topic examining how bigotry perpetuate within families/certain groups.
