Talking about Queen Elizabeth II being on the throne 27 years, little did we know she would reign for 70 years! Also, D-Day being 36 years ago, this summer it'll be 80 years! 😲 I was sixteen in 1980, & I turn sixty next month, how time really does fly! Great watching these old episodes of The Street, I never tire of them . 🥰🤩

I have never followed soaps they never interested me but I grew up with them as a sort of white noise, my Mum watched all the soaps (still does but I only catch them at Christmas) these episodes where aired before I was born but they are so much better than todays I found these by accident and have loved watching. There is something fascinating about them maybe it’s watching a snap shot of life that was before my time, fantastic!

I used to cringe to corrie when I was a kid as my Mum was a big fan. I've started watching now I'm 58 and now I'm so enjoying it. It is A M A Z I N G to realise that as of June this year 2023, These episodes are 43 years old! It hardly seems credible! Ivy & burt .. gone The factory girls ..gone Elsie, Bett, Annie, Alf, Emily, Stan, Hilda, Len, Rita, Renee Vera, Jack, Ida, Mike, Albert, Ena, Deirdre, Ray, Betty Turpin Eddie, Billy Walker. I think Ken, Gail & ... someone else from the origional cast but ive forgotten are the only ones still alive & in the show. Im not sure about Susie Birchall Steve Fisher, even the origional Tracey Langton is in her 40s !! I know Brian Tilsley ( Chris Quentin) moved over to the states! Dont know if hes still around! I dont know about Mavis ? Still 43yrs is incredible! It sounds such a long long time ago yet watching this now doesnt seem so long! So many brilliant actors all gone. Sad & poignant! Thank You 🇬🇧👧

Chris Quentin manages a strip club in London’s West End and he was engaged to one of the young dancers. Ken, Rita and Audrey are still on the show but their appearances were subdued during the Covid concern. Mavis isn’t on the show, but sometimes Rita goes to visit her at a B and B that she owns. Emily hasn’t been on screen but she appeared by IPad to wish Ken a Happy Birthday a few years ago.

I was living in England at this time (my mum was British and my dad American) I would go see my Nan and she always watched this show. I wasn’t really interested as a young teenager, but I’m surprised now in my 50s that I remember many of the characters. Nostalgia at its best for me, Hilda was obviously unforgettable for me and actually how I found this on KZfaq. The way Deirdre championed that relationship between creepy Arnold and Emily was a bit disturbing to me! All her 'nudge, nudge, wink, wink' jokes about him to Emily got a bit sickening - it was almost voyeuristic! Deirdre didn't know the bloke from Adam, yet she was keen to see them married off at warp speed - and of course he turned out to be a bigamist and total maniac! With friends like Deirdre, etc. It didn't even make sense her pushing them together, because it got her evicted. As soon as they were engaged Arnold got his feet under Emily's table and ordered Deirdre and little Tracy out. He practically threw them onto the streets. Served Deirdre right really!

@@elterrifico9522 True, the first 'Tracy', Christabel Finch, was a real sweetheart, and so natural on camera. Of course playing it from birth, she was so young she didn't realise she was on camera - and that was her charm! It was very sweet to see her rapport with Eileen Derbyshire as her Auntie Emily, and even grumpy Albert Tatlock struck up a friendship with her. Though it sometimes worried me she was being called a different name - and being told to call a different woman 'mummy', aged three upwards. Very confusing for the poor little mite! Someone on these pages once commented that Christabel Finch's parents moved many miles away from Manchester and abruptly pulled her from the show in 1983 without warning the producers - which if true, seems a shame for all concerned. The role of Tracy wasn't re-cast for another two years - Deirdre would just mention she was at a friend's house for tea or upstairs! The worst version of 'Tracy' for my money was robotic Holly Chamarette, unaccountably picked from 60 child actors who auditioned for the coveted role in 1985. It was a casting mistake, and she was 'let go' in 1988. With her dreadful, monotonous Dalek voice and delivery, no wonder her mother Deirdre was forever sending her out of the room to 'wash her hands', 'run a bath' or 'listen to some tapes'. The next incarnation of Tracy the almost equally wooden Dawn Acton, in late '88 aged 11, and stayed off and on to 1999. I think Kate Ford who got the plumb job of playing adult Tracy in 2002, has done a pretty good job with some challenging storylines, the toughest of which was making her a murderer! I no longer watch modern Corrie - is she still in it?

I think Christabel moved to Australia and started a family. As for Kate Ford, she makes occasional appearances but the Tracy character is more of a cartoonish caricature these days. Today’s storylines are absurd

@@bsaunders5271 Yes, that was a very touching little scene between Mike and Emily I thought, beautifully written. I think he loved Deirdre very much, and would have been a good dad to Tracy too - I never understood Deirdre choosing pompous, boring Ken over dynamic Mike, she wanted her head examined! The Street had a fantastic team of scriptwriters in its glory years under the brilliant producer Bill Podmore, from 1976 when he arrived (bringing back iconic Pat Phoenix as Elsie Tanner and introducing the new dynamic southern character of Mike Baldwin), to around 1987 when national treasure Hilda Ogden left.

@@MarcoNegrisEye To many of us actor Geoffrey Hughes will always be Eddie Yeates first and foremost! Eddie was a legend I wish he had stayed in the Street. I just watched the November 1987 episodes when Eddie made a surprise, one-off return to visit his friend and former landlady Hilda in hospital, after she had her nasty run in with burglars at Dr and Mrs Lowther's house. Geoffrey Hughes wanted to have one final chance to play Eddie opposite Hilda, before she said goodbye to the Street for good in December that year. It was a lovely surprise - for Hilda and viewers at home - when the familiar figure of Eddie lumbered into the hospital ward to visit his old pal 'Mrs O', bless him! He'd hardly aged a day in the near 4 years since he left! That wasn't the last time Geoffrey Hughes and Jean Alexander acted together though - she made a number of guest appearances as Lily Barton in ITV's 'Heartbeat' with him in 2001 and 2003. He played conman and lovable rogue Vernon Scripps from 2001-2005.

Deidrie looking really attractive. She must have dropped a couple of stone since her chubbier years 78/79.

Yes, Deirdre definitely had a frumpy stage in the late 'seventies didn't she, when she was first a single parent living in Alf's flat above the shop. She was chubbier in the face with a short, rather severe hairdo. You might recall she actually had a facial injury/black eye at one point, which was so bad they couldn't disguise it with make up and had to mention in the script that she'd slipped on one of Tracy's toys. That's something of a mystery. I've often wondered how actress Anne Kirkbride got that black eye. I hope it wasn't domestic violence in her personal life - it's said she had a lot of bad luck with men until she finally met her future husband on the show. I thought she went a bit too thin around the time of Mike's affair - there was nothing of her!
