He was being generous. In any other country with a fraction of the amount of wealth America has if you're pregnant you have access to healthcare. You don't have to skip treatments or abstain from appointments. You don't have to stay in a job for fear of losing access to healthcare and you also have maternity leave but that's definitely a post birth benefit. Things that are luxuries in America are considered the norm across the planet. No country is perfect but the pro life movement in America is woefully misnamed. Most don't seem to care one way or another they just want it to be in God's hands. There's a clickbait pro life piece of Orwellian madness I was sent recently. Namely about the number of babies "born" "alive" after "abortions". And the quotes are necessary because they've redefined all of those words to the point of madness. For the chance to make a point, abortions are redefined so it also includes miscarriages. And born and alive have similarly been given more encompassing definitions, including incapable of living because of missing organs like lungs. So a woman suffering a horrific miscarriage of a fetus incapable of surviving or even alive gets added to their list as a success. And it is because that's up to the will of God, exactly how they think things should be.

I heard a frightening story. A 16 week pregnant woman, was having a miscarriage. She and her husband were devastated. They had been very happy about the baby. The woman was bleeding badly. At the hospital she found out that the placenta had started to tear loose from her uterus and her water had broken. She wanted to save her baby, but the doctor said that there was no way to save it. She was also told that if the placenta tore completely loose, she would bleed to death in minutes, and that the ruptured membranes of the amniotic sac left her open for a serious infection. Her only chance to survive was to remove the fetus, which had no chance to live, and perform surgery to stop the bleeding. However, since abortion is illegal where she was, she would have to wait until the baby's heart stopped. The doctor could not legally perform lifesaving surgery with a fetal heartbeat present. She was told that she would have to pray that the baby's heart stopped before she bled to death. She was lifeflighted to a place where the surgery could be performed. This is what happens when politicians and clergy try to play doctor. They have no business dictating medical care.

I read that article when they interviewed her husband. It was a couple visiting in Malta (I believe) and it was crazy what they had to go through. They were just going to keep her in the hospital to see if she died or not. He was lucky to get help to get her out of there. I haven’t seen a follow up yet to the story.

Even a catholic hospital I know of had sisters, who were the administrators too, allowed abortions in some cases, certainly like this. They just didn’t talk about any cases. If the clergy found out they’d be in trouble.

This story should be told in every state legislature which has outlawed abortion or limited obstetric services. OBGYN access is often limited and these laws will make bad matters worse.

@@johnransom1146 Laws, written by politicians, that limit medical access, are bound to cause problems. Politicians need to stay out of medicine. They cannot imagine all of the problems that they might cause. We already have the highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the industrial world. Now what? Anti-abortion laws will interfere with maternal care. When state politicians start banning medical procedures related to pregnancy, women will die. No Healthcare for the bleeding mother while there is still a heartbeat? Bad idea.

If a Supreme Court Justice lies to be affirmed to the post, and then teams up with the other LYING JUSTICES, to do away with a provision they ALL said during their confirmation hearings they would never challenge, well THAT is TWO strikes. (It only takes one more to strike out, dude). But even so, it's still too much, if it goes against (and it definitely does) the wishes of American voters. I grew up with a RESPECTABLE Supreme Court in the seats, a Supreme Court intend on doing the best for citizens at large, not the best for the Capitalism Abusers. The days the SCOTUS deserved my respect, I'm afraid, are long gone.

Question: Would you ever overturn roe v wade Answer: NO, certainly not 2 years later, "well I am more experienced now, I've continued to study the law, and I now feel that my earlier assertion that I would not overturn roe v wade was presumptuous and based on a personal misunderstanding of then nuances of the law." Literally unless they admit it there is no way to PROVE that they lied at the time on purpose just to get the job and doe exactly that. When MTG was forced to testify and she spent 1/2 the time on her phone, on the witness stand just saying "i dont recall" to every question. Again unless she admits to it later you can't PROVE that she was lying. Everybody knows she is lying but how do you prove it. Even if she answered the question the very next day she can just say "well I didn't recall during the trial but then I was thinking about it and I remembered".

Unless they admit to it or you find a video recording of them saying "im going to lie to congress to get the job then revoke roe v wade", then you have no proof.

Just goes to show how most extreme right wingers do not see far enough down the road to understand the full implications of they're agenda. While Thomas was crowing about only gay rights, those right were built upon a foundational precedent of interracial marriage. I am sure Mr. Thomas realizes this but feels confidant that he and everyone else, like he & Ginnie, will be 'grandfathered in' legally from the time of the overturning ruling. Further yet more rollbacks of rights and state/church relationships WILL occur not JUST because they have become enshrined goals of the far right, but because THEY CAN. It will allbe done as an excercise of POWER.

I was fortunate enough to be at this taping. It was a great time. I’m a little bummed there was no Q and A, but before the show Seth vented about what the show has been through the past few years and thanked us for supporting him through the years, as well as how useful the KZfaq comments have actually been for their show. Since I didn’t get to say it in person, Thank you Seth for being a source of humor and happiness through the pandemic and the crazy politics of the time. In a void where John Stewart isn’t around, you’re picking up the torch in my head, at least on the comedic front. So from the bottom of this jackals heart, thank you Seth, and the team at late night. P.S. if you guys just toss out the cue cards, you should really see if people in the crowd wants to take them. There’s probably way more than enough even if everyone wanted one.

Between all of the late night shows though, I personally feel Seth provides a take that is something similar to what John would. To me, Trevor doesn’t do this as well, nor should he. Trevor has his place, but I think John’s shoes are way too big for pretty much anyone to fill. He made the show his own, which was a smart move.

If this was put back into the "hands of the people," let's have a national vote on retaining Roe v. Wade protections. The people of Ireland voted to lift the absolute prohibition against abortions in 2018. Wish we could do that here.

We can do that here. All thats needed is for the law to be passed by 2/3 Congress and then 3/4 of the States to ratify it. Roe was always on shaky ground and even Ruth Bader Ginsburg thought it would be over turned eventually. It could have been taken out of the Supreme Courts hand if you passed a Constitutional amendment. This is all your fault for not doing so before Roe was overturned.

Thomas has always fought against unenumerated right, so anything that isn’t explicitly mentioned in the constitution. So innocent til proven guilty, the right to privacy (especially in marriage), the right to travel, and a ton more, and there’re under attack. Funny thing though, they made up some BS qualified immunity for cops and prosecutors , THAT is not in the constitution either.

Well, SCOTUS Justices, like all wealthy, prominent people, are above the law. Most of those SC Justices have daughters. I’m sure if any one of them becomes pregnant from a rape, or from boofing too hard at a party and not recalling who she screwed, or if the ultrasound reveals a severely disabled or handicapped or deformed fetus, or if their lives are at risk, THEY will be able to get safe, discreet abortions.

Inclusive language is essential to get support for trans men and nonbinary/binary nonconforming people, who will have an even harder time getting care then cis women because of this ruling. Thanks

Show up to demonstrate in the meantime, sign petitions, knock on doors for political organizations or make calls. Donate money to blue campaigns because people need to see the center/left point of view more often than alt-right in ever-present TV and online ads. There are things, big and little, that almost anyone can do with a little free time. And it will help you feel better to see that others care, too.

It took 49 years for those brilliant minds who have been on the court since at least 1992 (a mere 30 years) to DISCOVER that Roe v. Wade had been "egregiously wrong" on the law! Wow! This puts to shame the notion of Glacial Speed. However, to help the magnificent six, I'd like to suggest to them that another case had been ACTUALLY "egregiously wrong" for an even longer time than Roe: 83 years, to wit: U.S v Miller, 307 US 174 (1939) [the grandfather of 2nd Amendment cases] .How about re-visiting and overturning it?

The constitution clearly leaves everything not defined as a federal responsibility to the states. People have more power at the local level. Beware of too much power at the federal level … it never ends well. Because of the healthy tension between the feds and the states, an ultimate arbiter is required. The court is also charged with protecting the rights explicitly defined in the bill of rights. Abortion was never a constitutional right, and Roe v Wade was poor case law. Even RGB admitted this.

I wonder if it’s the same people that have a problem with same sex marriage, that are opposed to legal abortions. Why do they care so much about what people do in their private lives. I think the opposition to abortion is to keep people in poverty as it’s easier to control and manipulate people the less money they have. Making abortion illegal or difficult has never had positive results. It’s another disadvantage for women. Why are some people so intimidated by women having equal opportunities.

As for the justices' blatant, recorded-for-posterity flat out lies--under oath remember--they should be dealt with just as anyone else who lies during their interview, and also the most common punishment given out by the "highest" court when they rule on someone committing perjury in their court. Either every man/woman is equal in the eyes of the law, no one is above the law, then the answer is obvious and clear as a sunny day in June. They either mean something, or have lost all significance in American society.

EXACTLY! I am a firm believer in INDIVIDUAL rights and smaller government. "States' Rights" has, throughout history, been the rallying cry of oppressors to keep oppressing when they realized they were losing power at the national level. It was used to justify secession over slavery. It was used in an attempt to nullify national laws that tried to limit slavery. It was used to justify Jim Crow. And it is in use now. You can't say "the people" have won and are more free when their state government is stomping all over their individual liberty and happiness at every turn for 'crimes' such as exerting their individual bodily autonomy, making their own choices about which consenting adults they love or wish to marry, whether they have children or not, etc.

The Constitution pretty much just says there should be some federal courts, and Congress should take care of that. The End. Congress changed the Supreme Court to nine justices at some point because there were nine district courts. There are now 13 district courts.

The only truly crazy belief is not that abortion is murder or that it’s a woman's choice for an abortion is a fundamental right. The only crazy belief is that the other side must be evil, or insane, or stupid to believe what they do. The reality is that it is a complex and difficult topic. Both sides have an intelligent well thought and well-articulated argument that is worth consideration. Of course, there are hate mongering nut bags on both sides. Consider how evenly divided this issue is in our country. Most people didn't want Roe vs Wade changed because most people want stability. That is why you see prolife people in favor of retaining Roe vs. Wade. I like Seth's show a lot. I often think he demonstrates that calm rational approach to topics that are often losing perspective in an emotional panic. But not today.

Seth, I doubt you'll read this, but one thing I really appreciate about A Closer Look is it's always felt like the comedic successor to a Keith Olbermann monologue. It's satirically hard-hitting, timely and grounded, yet balances an air of urgency with one of levity. Thanks for always making time to cover the hypocritical right.

Y'all, check for when your elections are and mark it in your phone's calendar. Make sure you have up to date and a valid form of identification. Make sure you are at the right voting location. Have no reason for them to deny you to vote. Remind your family and friends and make a plan for going out to vote.

Also, if you can avoid voting by mail do so. since so many ballots were rejected in Texas alone with their new law requiring the form of identification to be the exact same as the one you registered with... who remembers that? Seriously wtf?! Also everyone should be prepared to wait in long lines with your own snacks and water since they've closed so many polling locations. Better yet if you can vote early in person do so, so that if you are rejected for any reason you have a chance to correct it. Voting shouldn't be this hard in a democracy

Every State that out laws abortion, should require a DNA listing of every male in the State. This way women who are forced to carry a child to term will have the evidence to collect child support for that child. If men want to play, they must be prepared to pay until their child is at least 18 years old.
