Council Block old Lift (Typical scary lift from the 1970s)

This is a typical 'Express Lift Co Ltd' model that was installed in most council blocks from the 1970s.
There are a few videos that have been on my HDD for a while
waiting for some extra footage (like this one).
For this video, I may have a separate trip to have a look in the motor room as I may have an opportunity in the new year - To be confirmed.
For my next video (coming soon) it's the same case, I didn't want to upload it until I filmed the motor room. I waited a YEAR before being able to film it - some ROARRRING old car park lifts - this video is being edited now!
THIS VIDEO
Original cabs and landing position lamps, but the motor has been connected to a Variable Frequency Drive rather than being completely original. But it does make that WICKED slow down noise when the lift reaches 6 - listen at 5:58.
The internal display has been added at some stage also, so not completely original but certainly good enough to film!
The lift smells of an 'old hospital' or 'old persons home'. I'm not criticising, but i'm hoping you know what sort of smell I mean!
Don't interfere with that mechanism!!
Thanks to a former work colleague for the heads-up on this one.

Always been terrified of these. The creepy little window, the sound of it, the smell of disinfectant or something you used to get in them and waiting in silence hoping it doesn't stop on another floor to pick up a serial killer or break down leaving you trapped.

Since this will probably the last of your videos I will see this year (even if you upload another one, I won't be watching it before next year as I will be leaving for Christmas and New Year soon) I want to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU for all your great videos. I really appreaciate you spending so much of your time without expecting anything in return but maybe a nice word in the comments. A merry Christmas to you and your familiy and of course all the best wishes for 2019 from one of your German viewers!

Thank you very much for your comment! I've had a cold over the last 2 weeks and was hoping to push a few more videos out, but when you're not well your motivation goes - and life/family should always come first (or 'lemsips and rest' in my case!!). I have about 30 videos to edit at the moment (10 epic ones) so loads to do and I may be recording a couple more 'what I call epic videos' in January as well! TOO MUCH EDITING to catch up on!! I think you must be the first person for me to wish a Happy Christmas to, so have a good one and thanks once again :) Matt and Chay

The floor indicator in the lift has the same shape as the original buttons. Maybe they paid attention to this detail, which is nice. Thanks for your videos ! It's very interesting to see how things work, and the "art" behind the designing and building of older lifts !

I couldn't hear any inductors clicking so I assume the control circuits have been modified and the standard selector removed. Shame as that was one of those lovely sounds when riding on the top of the lift car and hearing the selector clicking as you got closer to the top. EDIT: Just as an after thought, the keys to those locks on the car panel were just the same as the ones for most British produced cars at the time. My dad had a massive bunch and if I think about it he could probably opened any car at the time! The other thing is that this is either a deep lift or they didn't specify coffin doors at the back. Unusual for council blocks. Thank you for your videos sir, they bring back such memories of happy times. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

I could hear the brake release in the motor room, thought I'd hear the selector. The sequencing of the lamps seems to indicate that the MH selector is still present. Not sure why a modern day controller would be programmed to sequence the lamps in that way.
@michaelwatkiss1650
@michaelwatkiss1650 5 жыл бұрын
MH selector has probably been replaced by electronic selector, looking at the levelling curve i would think that an EXPRESS VACO drive was fitted in the early 90s and the selector replaced at the same time.

Looking at the levelling curve i would say that an EXPRESS VACO drive was fitted to this installation in the early 90s and the MH selector was replaced by the electronic model at the same time . This was a common solution to erratic floor levelling problems at the time, an awful lot of 2 speed council lifts were fitted with VACO'S as it gave much smoother ride characteristics and saved on brake lining wear.

I noticed something with the floor indicator light panel at each floor. I think they use incandescent bulbs as when the direction arrow lights up, the floor number lamp briefly dims as would be the case when incandescent bulbs are first switched on. I think they must be 24v or so as looks like the supply voltage sags when more than one lamp is on. Great to see they are not too modernised and still have some character. Thanks for the video.

My grandmother lived in a block with lifts a lot like this. Same shape of buttons and the finish on the metalwork. Her block was built in the early 60's and they kept the lifts as they were up into the late 80's, so I'm wondering, could that lift be older than 70's? That aside, great video as usual. But anyway do you suppose that the floor indicators in the hall, were actually LED or just incandescent lamps behind plastic inserts to make it look so? and boy those cabs were really bare bones, it looked like you were inside of a walk in freezer at a fast food restaurant. [ minus the shelves and food in there...HA HA at least the one at Taco Bell, where I worked back in the 90's, used to look like that . . . .

Most lifts from this time (1970s) in the UK had a window. I'm not sure that it is anything other than, so people inside the lift can see out, and people on the landings can see in. Perhaps comforting, rather than not being able to see in or out.

@@mrmattandmrchay Couldn’t they also be dangerous in some circumstances? Say if they window was broken by vandals. Then they could reach through and unlatch the door if they knew what they were doing, or if they’re drunk or daft they could get their arm crushed by the lift going by. Is that why there’s a metal cage between the glass?
