Needing to fertilize our garden, we used a farmers dump truck. We are still getting the hang of things, especially learning how to down-shift.

Glad that is not my truck you are driving. Glad those gears are in a box or they would be spread for miles down the road. There is a definite nack to driving a roadranger and you need to get someone to show you the correct technique. I had similar problems when i first started driving one, especially when they throw you in and hope you can learn to swim.

when you are slowing down the truck use the jake brake and then use the truck brakes at 20 to 25 mph lightly not pump the brakes airbrakes run out when you pump em and dont ride it if you are slowing down the press softly on the brakes and ride it from 25 mph to 10 and then let off for a few seconds and then softly ride it till it stops and then when it stops let off it and then hold it down its better for the brakes,just a little advice

Same in Michigan although you need a "F" - Farmers endorsement on your license. That downshifting was terrible, if you don't know the trans/vehicle you should be downshifting as you slow down NOT slowing down and then trying to find a gear

and also dont float shift so much its hard on the transmission and it uses more fuel each time you rev it like that with over 70k pounds you waste up to a 1/4 a gallon of diesel and use the jake brake its there for a reason

I know that the vid is old, but I noticed that you had one mud flap missing on the right side, My truck had the same issue, I had to take it in for its C.O.F and it didn't pass..the laws in NZ sucks

It is the simplest thing in the world, Started 4 Months ago and have already advanced to lead driver, Just remember dont dump if you dont feel comfortable (angles are important, you dont want to tip your rig over!), Make sure to pre-trip daily and check your tires Morning and evening, Dump trucking wears on tires pretty good. All in all I enjoy the hell out of it, Best job in the world!

In Florida you are exempt from having a CDL if you are using a truck for agricultural purposes within a certain radius of your farm. Looks like the case here, a little scary, I hope at least one of the two people are qualified to drive the truck. Not knowing wheather to build up more air pressure is a sign right there. I'm still a rookie driver with minimal experience, I never kept trying to shove it in. Is that an 8 speed?

I drive a Sterling LT9511 Tri-Axle with an Eaton Fuller 8LL transmission. I mainly haul blacktop and stone for the construction company I work for. I have to say for someone that doesn't have a lot of experience, you didn't do to bad a job. Just give it time. Eventually, you will learn to feel the gears out and at that point, shifting is a breeze, regardless of wither you are going up or down in gears.

i havent driven a big rig. but i imagine its like floating gears in a car just way less forgiving because they dont have constant mesh transmitions. but i was taught to pass peak power and you feel it, then pull it into nuetral as you back of the gas, aply pressure to the next gear and then let the engine and road speed match up and it slips into gear

It's all sound and feel. You will get used to the sound of the engine and you will just know what gear to be in. Same with shifting. You will feel the trucks speed...she'll tell you to shift. Not to bad for a guy that is not a normal driver. Keep practising, you'll get it!

they should start you off cleaning the garbage inside of that cab first, and then slowly work you up to getting behind the wheel and shifting smoothly.

+scpd613 Totally agree. It is one of the very first things you learn. NOT to have any trash on the floor that can roll around and get under your pedals. SMH

take it easy on er dont listen to that idiot "shifting agrressively" trucks are nothing but big babies and need to be a treated as such..jamming it in gear will get you nothing but a roasted transmission. however..for someone who dosent have a CDL obviously has little to no expeirience driving a truck...i give you credit for trying..because most people wouldnt have made it off the lot. good effort and keep working on it :)

That's what I did, I got to a 1,000 it was time to down shift. I also wrote down and studied, most 10 speeds 20 mph = 6th gear, 25 = 7, you have to find your own way every truck is different, best way to learn ifyour new. 1:36 NO! On any 10 speed I know just coasting between 1-5 just tap the gas pedal slightly and it will drop in from 5-4-3-2-1, you can go 5-3 without the clutch. At idle speeds rolling with the clutch in it grinds, 7 seconds of grinding at 2:15 sure way to get into an accident!

Double clutch. Clutch to go to neutral, then clutch again to go into gear.
@shortthrow50
@shortthrow50 7 жыл бұрын
dump truck drivers don't use the clutch. we float gears. we don't drive over the road where you go through your gears and sit there for 5 hours. we go through 1000 traffic lights a day and have to go through the gears that many days. If you had to double clutch like that all day you would have to get a knee replacement every year.
