This is a video series where we can have some real talk about the challenges of being a creative and sharing our work with the world: self-doubt, perfectionism, procrastination, etc. Every creative faces these challenges at some time and at some level.
This first video is an introduction to the topic and my reason for starting this series. I would love to know what aspects of this topic you would like me to cover in this series!
Please share in the comments below, any experiences you have faced in regards to this topic! I think the more we talk about it and help each other, the more we can step into living our best lives!
If you'd rather, you can email me at kittywittypapercraft@gmail.com. I'd love to hear from you!!
P.S. I promise to work on not saying 'umm' so much!!! :P

I love this chat so much. I have been a creative and crafty person my whole life dipping into ceramics, jewelry making, metal smithing, oil painting and in last five years landed in paper making. I have spent $1,000’s of dollars buying all the things. I know that I have a gift to share but have been bombarded by feelings of guilt and shame over my consumption and spending. I have felt like I need more purpose in my crafting. I feel like it should serve a higher purpose than my own self interest. I started a KZfaq channel in July of this year wanting more connection to other crafters. I know my journey is still just getting started. Unlike you I have not found “my style”. I play with all kinds of media’s and styles. I am hopeful it is all building up to something bigger than me. I look forward to developing a pathway with purpose until I find my way. Thanks so much for making this video. I look forward to continuing to follow your journey.

Hey there! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your story! I think buying lots and lots of supplies is often a way of avoiding actually creating. We stay "busy" with looking for and accumulating and organizing lots of things and then feel guilty when we don't make things with our supplies! It is SO common! Do not feel bad. I will be talking about that for sure. And I do want to say also, that you do not need any purpose in your crafting other than experiencing the joy that comes with the *process* of creating! We need more people on this planet who regularly feel joy. It is our true nature and is what makes us feel happy and makes us better people for it! It is great you are playing and have played with all sorts of media and styles! You will certainly find your style that way and it can lead to something bigger if you want it to, but it's OK if it's just for the joy of it! As long as you are continuing to create, your pathway will unfold before you! I'm excited to hear more about your journey! Thank you for following along here! xoxo Amy :)

Thank you for just chatting with us about things we all suffer from in one way or another. Just knowing that someone else struggles with it is key. I have dabbled in little crafts along the way, until a friend of mine at church started selling stamps to make cards. I was hooked. Went to parties and bought tons of stamps. I always felt guilty of the expense, but I never spent more than what my husband was doing smoking. So, I just kept buying. I always used them. Made thousands of cards. I usually gave them away in packets as gifts to friends at church. Then I found organizations I could make them for in cancer treatment, and the cards for Quilt of Valor to give with their quilts to servicemen. I felt good that I had a ministry in some way to help with the guilt of cost. Now I have gotten into Junk journals for my own use, but make them to give away because I feel they are not good enough to sell. Yours are darling. So this is good to just talk about some of the things everyone has problems or self doubts. Only I will be drinking ice tea instead. Thanks again.

Hi Madilyn! It's so nice you've been creating for awhile now and giving your gifts to great causes! It's nice you give your junk journals away, but people may buy them (if that is a route you wanted to try!). The more you make, the better you get and we are always our harshest critic! So honored you will be watching this series with your iced tea in hand! Glad to have you here! xoxo Amy :)

Really helpful food for thought. Overcoming doubts, fear of judgment and messing up, bringing our gifts into the world and being creative and yet still being practical with our time, all topics worth digging into. And yes, following the breadcrumbs and taking baby steps seem to get us there! Thank you. I will be tuning in as this process and series moves along. Thank you so much!!

Yes! All of the above mentioned and more. This series could be a "breadcrumb" for me to not be so fearful of judgement when it comes to putting my stuff out there. I am a junk journal junkie. I love vintage and I found you because I enjoy doing sewing pattern journals, vintage children's books, vintage Santa and paper...all kinds of paper. Something I would benefit from is being able to finish what I start and how to organize my thoughts. I have so much I want to do and one thing gets going and then another creeps in and then another and before you know it I am overwhelmed and can't get out of my own way. I've sold a few things but have trouble with "asking for money" - I'm torn between charging too much and getting ripped off by charging too little. Also would love to learn more about the business side of crafts. I look forward to this series hoping to be able to move past some of these obstacles and not be so afraid to put my stuff out there. Thank you!

Wow this speaks to my soul Amy! I love the quote, “if it’s in you, it’s for you”. I have found myself becoming obsessed with acquiring the materials for crafts and then never doing them because of my perfectionism. I also have a very talented sister who is 13 years older than me. She is the official‘artist’ in the family and is unbelievably talented! That fed my fear and anxiety of getting started. I’ve recently just decided to go for it and jump in and I am so happy for having done so! I have photo albums of inspiration, notes of ideas and I’m just doing it. I’ve had plenty of ‘breadcrumbs’ in my life and have applied my creativity in other ways, decorating my home, planning beautiful parties for my kids and family celebrations. My kids are all in college and I have the time, I think we are about the same age Amy. I work full time and craft when I can and it’s truly a great joy to me! I haven’t shared anything other than in my hobby group pages and I’m happy with that. Thank you and I look forward to more ‘chats’! 💗

We each have our own, unique gifts that come out in different ways. Sounds like you have a wide of creative talents and that is so wonderful! Thank you for following along! Oh Amy, thank you for sharing your heart. Friend, you have no idea how much our stories parallel. It honestly gave me chills - down to the children/mama part. I am so interested in this series and what you have to say. I definitely feel alone. My piers and friends do not get my creative or vintage side. Many know it now, but I kept that quiet for a long time. Too much of “how can you have time to craft” or “why would you want to do that?” or... the list goes on. It took me a long time to realize that they were not trying to be cruel, but they were seeing a different side of me. And, we all make choices. Honestly, I am no longer an avid reader, instead, I hunt vintagy bits and I create. For me it is therapy, as reading is an escape for others. Procrastination, not good enough are some of the many words that I use to describe my process and work. I am really looking forward to hearing more coffee chats. Thank you Amy! 💕

@KittywittyPapercraft 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching, Jennifer!! That is definitely a good topic to discuss! Some people like acquiring things, but don't have a desire to create with them! The key, I think, is do you WANT to create with the items you have? Is the desire there? When you buy things, is it with the intention that you are going to make something? If so, then you are probably dealing with some level of fear about the actual process of creating. If not, maybe you just want to be a collector or a seller of vintage items! I'd be curious to know what you think it is! Thanks for sharing!! xoxo Amy :)

Thanks for this video! This sounds like me! I have always did some sewing. I also have always collected little trinkets, and fifties themed stuff. I started scrapbooking then card making. I then found out about a.ltered books and eve tually junk journals watching KZfaq. I have sold some journals on consignment through someone's Etsy shop on KZfaq, which I really appreciate. I would love to open my own Etsy shop so I could also sell vintage books, etc. However I have no clue how to do the technical stuff. I only have a few digitals in my computer. I have to wait until I have someone to help me. I have tried! I would not have a KZfaq channel either for that reason, and also don like my voice and am sure I would get nasty comments about it. Maybe a talk about starting an Etsy shop would be very useful to a lot of us.
@KittywittyPapercraft
@KittywittyPapercraft 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching, Debby! The tech stuff can be tricky to learn, but it is definitely doable!! I am not tech savvy at all and have learned everything I've needed by Googling and watching KZfaq and asking questions in Facebook groups! There have been MANY times I've wanted to pull my hair out in frustration, but Ive always figured things out! It takes time and lots of patience! And I wish you wouldn't discount KZfaq because of your voice! So many different voices are out there and really *most* people are kind! I've worried about showing my face on camera bc I don't like the way I look on camera and think someone may comment about my big nose or something! LOL But you know what? If someone leaves a nasty comment, it says more about them than you. That's how I look at it. I feel really passionate about helping women overcome their fears and I"m not going to let a worry about what other people might think or say stop me. I hope you don't let that stop you from doing what you want to do, either! I will certainly be talking about opening an Etsy shop! It sounds like many people are thinking about that! Thank you for being here, Debby!! xoxo Amy :)

Oh, Amy I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. I am the Queen of self-doubt, and perfectionism. It has certainly held me back over the years. I think now, during the Pandemic, I've realized even more, the importance of taking time to just loose myself in being creative and not being so critical of what I do. I think one of the most carefree crafting moments I've recently had was when you shared the little tutorial on some of the simple library pockets with cards. I was able to get lost in the fun of creating, w/o judging whether or not it was really good enough. I just enjoyed the process and ended up, as you know making many, many more for my school volunteers. I am so excited for your new Creative Mindset Coffee Chat series!!!

I thought I was doing pretty good, but it has made me want to dream even bigger. Life is so precious! We really are not going to care when we are 100 if the art we made was perfect or if some Joe-schmo on the Internet criticized us one time!! LOL I try to remind myself of that often!! Thank you for your encouragement, my friend!! xoxo Amy :)

Oh my goodness Amy! It’s like you’re describing my journey into the junk journal community. I have basically followed your steps also! My kids are just about to leave the nest and I’m in the process of changing my work to part time. I would love to make and sell my journals also. Like many of us I spend more time buying than making! 😳. Part of my problem is making the time. Also, I don’t know if any of you feel this way, but I sometimes feel like maybe it’s not an important thing to do or that maybe nobody would be interested in buying what I make. I guess that’s the fear and self doubt you’re talking about. My husband playfully teases me about my crafting and says he doesn’t understand the novelty I have with with watching junk journal videos and making them. So would other people think my journal making is trivial? Is there a need for my product? I actually made a beautiful wedding guest book for my daughter’s wedding this past October. She loved it. I made my mother one for her birthday and she loved it. She said that she felt like she was transferred into the book and journeying into every page. So I think I have some talent, lol 😂. Amy, you’re videos are like candy and dessert to me! They are made from the era of children’s books that I love and collect! Thank you for this video and and sharing your skills and talents! 😊

I will talk about feeling like our hobbies aren't "important" (they are!) or that maybe no one will be interested in what we make (they will be!). :D Oh, and lots of people don't get junk journals. My husband and family don't either! It's just a matter of finding "your people!" As you can see from all the KZfaq channels devoted to junk journals, there are lots of people like us! And there is definitely a need for your product! For one, there is way more demand than there is supply for journals! And even though many people may make the same type of thing--there is only one you, and your style and perspective are unique! And yes, it sounds like you do have some talent! You need to share that with the world! Thank you for your kind words about my videos and work! I appreciate you being here!! xoxo Amy :)

In many ways, it’s as if you were speaking directly to me. My self doubt and procrastination are all that stands between me and my KZfaq channel, Instagram posts, and Etsy shop. Meanwhile, I make charming journals that I put in a big tote bin after completion. Sigh.

Oh, Jan! That breaks my heart! I hope you get to a point where you don't let self-doubt and procrastination stop you any longer from doing all those things!! I had to overcome them, too, to start all the same things! And I still deal with those things to a degree, but I don't let them stop me. We are going to be talking all about this! The world needs your gifts and you deserve the experience of sharing your gifts and building something for yourself!! xoxo Amy :)

Hi Julia! It takes time to build a successful Etsy shop! Just keep learning and trying every day! Start small and build from there. I've found taking the long view and having patience, essential! One tip I will share is that I think people who sell handmade goods can really be helped by having a strong social media presence (I'm partial to Instagram, but it depends on where your target market hangs out--could be Facebook). If you can build a following on social media, you can drive that traffic to your Etsy shop. It is hard to get seen on Etsy because there are SO many people (customers) coming onto the platform--esp. if you have a common item. What has you feeling the most overwhelmed or worried? Just keep pushing forward! There is lots of help out there, too! Are you familiar with Creative Hive VIP (free FB book for handmade business owners). Tizzit is also great. That's a membership site and the owner is awesome and has a great community in the membership. What do you sell? Best of luck to you!! xoxo Amy :)

Thank you Amy. I love your videos and this chat. I am always amazed at how organized and clean your craft room is. You work a lot in there and it’s perfect. I work for a few hours and mine looks like a tornado went thru it. Lol. Keep up the great work.

Hi Robin!! Thank you so much!! And hoo boy, I will send you a photo on Instagram of what my craft room looks like right now! LOL It gets VERY messy when I'm working on a project! I do clean up fairly often, but it will go weeks sometimes before I put things away! It is definitely not perfect, I promise! The pictures I share are often when it has just been cleaned up or maybe just a little corner or something ;). Thank you for commenting! I hope you're doing well! xoxo Amy :)

Hi Amy, I guess you'd call it procrastination and fear of not being good enough, but I'd love if you could share any insight you might have on 1) spending a lot of time watching other makers' videos and being "inspired" but not actually making anything yourself, and 2) getting carried away buying and collecting materials for your many planned projects, only to have them sitting around waiting for you to actually start them. Many thanks, Shaily

Hi Shaily! Thank you so much for sharing about what you'd like to see! Yes, both spending a lot of time watching what others are doing and buying supplies are both forms of procrastination which we do based on fears that we have--like you mentioned, fear of not being good enough. I have lots of thoughts on that for sure!! So glad to have you here and following along! Thank you!! xoxo Amy :)

HI Amy...Interesting series for sure. I have been crafting for a very long time.....I don't have a large circle of family or friends so my issue is that I create things, and albeit I enjoy the process, I just have no place for all the things I create. I always thought about trying to sell things, but then I worry that it will become a job, turning what I love into work. How has that worked for you? Also I was wondering if you've heard of The Brave Girls Club founded by Melody Ross? It seems like her club is the direction you would like to be headed. Thanks for sharing gina

Hi Gina! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment! I should do a video talking about the pros and cons of selling! You are right...it *can* turn something you love into feeling like work you don't always want to do. Actually, there isn't a single part of what I do that feels like a "job" (the kind you don't like!). I really love it. The struggles are balancing the business with personal life and the fact that there is SO very much to do to make a business successful (profitable), that doesn't involve creating art! If you just want to do it as a hobby and cover your cost of supplies with maybe a little pocket money leftover, than that is certainly doable and probably would keep it from feeling like "work". But if you want to make a part-time or full-time income, you have to learn marketing and sales in addition to the product making. I personally love the business side of it. It's just that it requires a big time commitment. I work at least 50 hours a week (sometimes 60 and I"ve worked some 70 hour weeks!) for a *small* part-time income! :) That is mostly on me bc I mostly sell time-intensive, one of a kind products which limits my income. I would be happy to talk more about that in this series! If you ever want to chat one on one, just email me at kittywittypapercraft@gmail.com. Hope you're doing well, friend!! xoxo Amy :)

Hi Amy!! Love this video and can relate to all the things you and everyone has said in their replies. I have loved art and crafts since I was a small child. Painting art will always be my first love and what I seem to go back too. I struggle with being all over the place with what I want to do. Trying to justify why and if it does not have a purpose to as spending money on things and thinking I need to get the ideas done to make the money back for what I spent and the time. Instead of just enjoying the process because life is to short. So what I end up with is all the things and then I am overwhelmed or loose concentration and interest and it just sits there. And then I feel guilty for spending the money and that takes all the joy out of it. If that makes sense...I need to relax and enjoy and stop worrying about where is this going all the time.

Love your new video series. I've been doing paper crafting since I was young. "Scrapbooking" as a teen, but got rid of creations as an adult (of course now wishing I didn't) Picked up scrapbooking again after my first child was born in the late 90's, continued after having twins in 2001, but then life got quite busy with three small children :) All the things you mention in the video are spot on for me. My goal now is to open an Etsy shop one day. I've only sold items at craft fairs over the past five or so years. I'd love to hear how to get over the perfectionism and procrastination and a talk on how to start selling on a platform like Etsy.

Hi Linda! Thank you for watching and sharing some of your story! I would love to also talk about selling your crafts online! That is something I've been thinking about. I'm definitely not a business coach or Etsy expert or marketing expert, but I've learned some things in my 3 years selling and I actually love the business side of it and would love to talk about it! I hope you do open an Etsy shop and if you ever have any questions, please let me know and I will try to help! Thank you for your suggestions! xoxo Amy :)
