What do you think of Murray Gold being back for Doctor Who?
LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS!
In this video, I will be discussing the recent news of Murray Gold's return to Doctor Who. Murray Gold originally joined the show in 2005 when Russell T Davies first revived the show. He went on to compose the music for over 12 years, scoring some of the most iconic moments in Doctor Who’s history.
From revamping the theme tune to creating the music for the Dalek and Cybermen, among other classic monsters, Murray has been widely celebrated for his role in forging a new musical identity for the show. His work on Doctor Who has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA for Best Original Television Music.
Now, after a hiatus of several years, Murray Gold is back! He will once again be working with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, providing the musical scores for three special episodes celebrating the show's 60th anniversary. The first of these episodes will feature David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, with the remaining two episodes leading up to the introduction of the new Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa.
However, this news has not been met with universal enthusiasm. While many fans are excited to have Murray Gold back, others have expressed disappointment that the show isn't taking the opportunity to bring in fresh talent to give the show a new musical direction.
In this video, I will be examining both the pros and cons of Murray Gold's return. On one hand, there's no denying the immense talent and creativity that Murray brings to the table. His music has become synonymous with the show and has played a huge role in making Doctor Who the beloved cultural phenomenon that it is today.
On the other hand, there is a valid argument to be made that the show should be looking to bring in new composers to give the show a fresh sound and perspective. After all, Doctor Who has always been a show that values innovation and pushing boundaries, and the music should reflect that.
So, in this video, we'll be exploring both sides of the debate and trying to come to a conclusion about whether Murray Gold's return to Doctor Who is a good thing or not.

exactly, it's a big show and it needs the big bois. For example you wouldn't have a fresh artist composing Fargo, you want Jeff Russo. As much as I agree new artists in the industry need opportunities you can't use a big show for that otherwise you're gonna drop the quality big time.

This is the best news out of all the stuff we have so far learnt about RTD2 in my opinion. The music Murray Gold brought to Doctor Who jelled the show together perfectly. When I think of Doctor Who one of the first things that comes to mind is the distinctive and magnificent themes this man created. Out of everyone that is returning along with RTD, he is by far the most important person to make this show successful again and I genuinely could not be happier that he is back.

With rtd, tennent, tate and now murry gold, its obvious that considering that Chris chibnal run was...not the best it's been, that the safest option to bring people back into watching the show is familiarity. Obviously things will change but they need assurance right now that people will watch the show and recently...less people have.

The danger with running the nostalgia game is that it's a higher chance that people will be disappointed or get bored. We tend to look back on the past with rosy glasses, and very little can match that standard. I love DT, I'm glad he's getting another swing at the axe for the 60th, but I hope they don't shy away from continuing to break new ground in the next season.
@ryanhunter226

Personally, I think the whole point of the 60th anniversary IS Nostalgia. Tennant (and Eccelston) was my Doctor as a kid like so many others, so we've been waiting for this. I loved Matt in his first Season (Season 5) and was excited when I saw the trailer for him. Missing David immensely (The End of Time regeneration messed me up bad) but open and accepting to a new direction. It was definitely new, but it still felt like Doctor Who. I attended a Dr Who Live show in 2010 at the SECC in Glasgow for my 10th birthday. And yes, it was Matt's Doctor. That will always be a special memory to me. After Season 5 things gradually became less interesting for me. Peter Capaldi sparked my interest and I thought his first Season was magnificent, but again I gradually drifted. The Mondasian Cybermen were my favourite Cybermen so I was thrilled with World Enough And Time. I thought the Doctor should've been a woman long ago but the only episode I really enjoyed was the one with Nikola Tesla as I've always admired him. Once again my interest was lost. Lost quicker than the others. I don't know how its going to go down or what the BBC's expecting, but for a lot of us, we're returning to the show precisely because its nostalgic and we can revel in 2005-2010. And for a lot of people who've heard the news, they intend to watch the anniversary episodes then as soon as David leaves, its back to business as usual and Who as it is will be of no further interest. Ill stick around for a bit with Ncuti. He deserves it and he'll bring a whole new era. I think he'll be fantastic. But some of us aren't getting that buzz we did in 2005 to 2010. THIS is that buzz.

i personally consider Gold to be a god. his music was the soul of the series, and with his departure a huge part of the emotional depth and aesthetics just disappeared for me. imho, he was the only one who could convey the images of the characters through their unique musical themes so subtly and inimitably. generally, i'm convinced he's insanely underestimated. the fact that he was rarely mentioned in all kinds of promotions is a cosmic injustice, considering that, in a way, he brought the series to life. all the core compositions give me chills whenever i get to listen to it for me, however, this is mainly about Moffat's run. listening to 'Amy In the TARDIS' for instance - you can actually fly away with your consciousness somewhere far away, as if you find yourself in the TARDIS with Amy and wholly getting in all this fairy tale experience. i believe he managed to achieve this effect by introducing the piano part and combining it with the chorus. then take 'The Mad Man With A Box' - the same indescribable vibes. and then there's 'I Am The Doctor' of course, which is insanely well-written in terms of the main melody's flow while remaining surprisingly simple and energetic. it goes without saying that each track is in remarkable harmony with the aesthetics and character of the 11th and his era so basically, this news sent me straight to heaven

I don't think Russel will stay past Ncuti Gatwa. I imagine his run will consist of this 60th and Christmas special this year, then three more seasons and Christmas specials over the next three years, then a year of specials to finish it off. Assuming 8 episodes per season and same specials format that David got, that's 32 episodes with Ncuti. Unless they break the three and out tradition because seasons are getting shorter. I'm glad he's back for the 60th, it would seem weird with a different person doing Donna's theme and her families and I'm expecting 14s theme to be a variation of 10s too! But please tell me he's not staying for Ncuti's era!

The way I look at it may be a hot take but here goes. When RTD rebooted the show in 2005, he undoubtedly understood the genre and more specifically he deeply and truly understood Doctor Who and how it should work. I refuse to believe that he made any choices just because he could. I think he surrounded himself with people that he KNEW would give the show what it NEEDED and not just what he wanted, and I from an artistic standpoint I think that's brilliant. So, I am not surprised that Murray is back for RTD2, and I would have preferred this over someone new only because Russel KNOWS he's going to get what the show NEEDS from Murray

5:55 So great to hear a fan give a balanced view on both composers Crispy - they each bring something different to the table and it often feels like fans have to pick a side as to who is the best. Its refreshing to hear a view that doesn't see it as some sort of competition between them. That for me is what's kind of disappointing about knowing Murray will be doing series 14 onward, that while I'm sure HE will bring something new, I miss the opportunity to have seen the work of yet another new composer, maybe something very different again. It makes absolute sense to have him for the 60th, as most of the characters themes were created by him and it will be nice to see if he plays with that a bit. But going forward, would have been nice for some fresh blood. Ah well, it is what it is I guess. Side note, if you can get it outside the UK, checkout Magpie Murders - as I watched it I was distracted by the score - turns out its another Murray Gold gem. Worth a watch/listen if you can.

I would love to hear new composers, but honestly I can't recall any themes from Jodie Whittaker era, I know what Segun was aiming at, but I think I prefer my Doctor Who music more adventurous. And I can't be mad that Murray Gold is coming back, because he always delievered stellar tunes. So I am looking forward to hear what new he have in store.

As much as I like Murray’s work on doctor who his return does worry me about Russell returning cause after they announced he was coming back as show runner he has tapped producers from his original era of the show the rumor that moffat is writing at least one episode and the return of David Catherine and Donna’s family it feels like he will just use nostalgia to just play it safe and do 2005-2010 all over again when the show should be moving forward

@@hunterhorsehelmsley7315I don’t feel the last era was disastrous it wasn’t perfect by no means but no era has been perfect I did like that Chris tried to give us the classic era with a bigger budget and I loved the doctor being under estimated again cause the doctor having a reputation was getting old by the end of season 6 and the ratings were good not pre streaming good but still good and the show never needed saving that was made up by haters who went into the era already predisposed to hate it for whatever reason

I am genuinely disappointed by Gold's return. He is great as a composer don't get me wrong but he composed for 10 SEASONS, he gave all there was to give and then moved on to allow a new composer to come in and shine and going back to him feels like such a regression, the show needs NEW talent so a new composer for this new era would've been preferred. I would be fine with this if it was just for the 60th for obvious reasons but Series 14 too? Not a fan of that, this is a huge step backwards and I fear fans will never get used to anyone else doing the music and that is a real shame because due to that Akinola was often never given the credit he deserved.

Murray Gold is terrible! his 'bombastic' themes cheapen the show and his scoring frequently drowns out the action and is frequently off tone with the story beats. I hated the 13th doctor, but two things they got totally right were the cinematography and the music. this is a real step backwards.
