I don't know I liked his acting and all but I kind of felt like the motion capture/CGI apes lost something. They were samey as each other. I liked the original and the actors in makeup because you could them apart better and the actors were able to emote through the makeup. @@criticalcommenter I think they were okay but like I said I personally like the use of make up over CGI and motion capture. The apes lost individuality and character that way. I think that is why they gave them scars and stuff but that is no replacement for what was lost. I will always like the originals best of all even if the new ones are more slick because the writing is stronger in the originals even the less popular later ones.

THE KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was not bad. It felt slow to me in many places, but I wander if the pacing was meant to reflect to slower, pastoral gait of a world without technology: no planes, cars, telephones, iPad, TikTok, deadlines, afternoon rush, radio, etc. Imagine a world (or our daily routine) without all our technological urgency. Much will be said of the special effects, which are astonishing-consistent, intricate, and excellent.

It wasn't an awful movie, but I felt a lot of my interest was only held with mild mystery aspects like "what's up with this girl who talks and has clothes" then "what is her plan". None of that really makes sense though because she's there through the movie but then has an objective to get into this bunker. The more you think about her character the more she's just there to be whatever the movie needed.

I've rewatched the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy and they've aged like fine wine in the years since their release. The best part is indeed Andy Serkis' performance as Caesar. The writing and development of his character is amazingly well done, especially with how well the films are directed. That said, I still have problems with the story and some of the other characters. The biggest problem I have with the series is that it kept teasing a huge battle that will decide the fate of which side becomes the dominate rulers of the planet, yet they never really went for it in the 3rd film, which was a huge letdown for me. Another problem is that I wish they had introduced the Colonel character in Dawn and built him up more as a villain, especially in the aftermath of what Koba had done. I don't want to see Kingdom for multiple reasons. The biggest being that the rebooted series was Caesar's story and War ended that story, so I'm going to leave my experience there. The second biggest reason is that Disney is in charge of this one and I don't trust them. And third, the people who directed and wrote the trilogy are not back for this one, which tells me that the same quality is not going to be there.

The Caesar Trilogy was never about the coming of a war that would decide who inherits the Earth. We all knew who would eventually come out on top (I mean, it’s right there in the title: _Planet of the Apes_ ). The “war” was always about Caesar’s internal conflict; the war within himself to balance his humanity and his ape-ness. _Rise_ was about discovery. For most of the film, Caesar struggles with his identity. He doesn’t know if he’s a human, an ape, a pet, or an individual. He’s treated like a family member by Will and his father, but like an abomination to the everyone in the outside world. When he’s thrown into the “sanctuary” with the other apes, he sees that he doesn’t fit in there either. He’s an outsider amongst his own kind, and his privilege sets him apart. However, when the man who is basically his father tells him that he can’t come home, Caesar is hit hard with the fact that he is not human, and he’s not part of a family. Maurice, the orangutan, helps him accept that being an ape is not shameful. This turning point is the “rise” of the ape in Caesar; his awakening. This kicks off his entire character arc across the three films. It’s now his purpose in life to elevate and lead the apes to freedom. _Dawn_ is a tragedy filled with hope. It’s about Caesar’s bias and failure. It’s about loss and desperation; innocence and ignorance; Koba’s fear and hatred; Malcom’s empathy and connection. It’s about brother versus brother. It’s about how dark things sometimes have to get before they can get better. That’s the dawn of the title. _War_ is about the war for Caesar’s soul. In this movie, Caesar becomes the villain. He’s motivated by fear and hatred, and he’s becoming the very thing he thought he destroyed in the previous movie: Koba. He thinks he’s trying to protect his people, but his selfishness puts them directly into harm’s way. His battle is not with humans or apes, but with himself; with his capacity for compassion, empathy, and sympathy. His quest for vengeance is in direct opposition with his purpose to elevate and lead apes to the promise land. These movies were never about a war between apes and humans. They’re about the battle to retain humanity and community in the face of chaos, death, and destruction. Apes together strong.

If nothing else at least the Apes movies give us something different to watch besides the endless superhero films. First time I saw the preview made me think of the original movie. Funny how the Orangutans in the original are kind of the villains but in the newer reboot trilogy they are the compassionate ones.
@scockery
@scockery 14 күн бұрын
The Orangutans were trying to maintain the balance between idealistic chimps and warlike gorillas. In reality, chimps are more aggressive than gorillas. Dr. Zaius said he knew man had destroyed themselves, and thus when Taylor (Heston) shows up, Zaius was worried for the future of apekind. In the second movie, Zaius fails.
@DeltaDanner
@DeltaDanner Күн бұрын
Might be building up towards that. The orangutans in the originals were villains for keeping humans oppressed, but it’s because they knew the truth about how dangerous we are. If Disney doesn’t fumble this trilogy (if that’s what it becomes) maybe the surviving humans will give the orangutans a reason to fear us. Imagine an orangutan that is compassionate towards humans seeing a city get destroyed by a nuke.
@bartsullivan4866
@bartsullivan4866 Күн бұрын
@@DeltaDanner I doubt that Caesar could have figured out a Nuke and not all the human survivors would not be all in one place. Much more interested to know what Noa and Mae saw in the telescope was it a spaceship or space station? How would they have survived without food and supplies out in space unless they had a cryo pod like in Aliens. At least it gives us things to ponder. Would have liked to have seen more Orangutans or Gorillas as well. Noa's tribe didn't seem to be a threat to the humans the film never really tells what the apes were rounding up the humans for. Slave labor for agriculture? That was the biggest issue I had for the new film. Did Mae have some kind of immunity to the virus the other humans did not?

Kingdom seems more like more character work and set-up for a much more complicated ape vs human conflict, now that humanity is in a very interesting place. The apes are also interesting, because they're starting to act far more human here than in Dawn and War. Seems like Noa and Mae are going to be the crux of the new trilogy, with their relationship and rivalry making things very complicated going forward. Proximus also came across as more of a potential future for Noa. 8/10, in my opinion.

The third one ended with a few dozen apes hiding out in the wilderness. The storyline will be brought to a close when the apes reach the same level of sophistication as humans have today, and when the astronauts from the first movie return to Earth. This series is leading up to the scenario in the original 1968 movie but this time we’ll see it from the apes’ perspective.

I'm older than most of you guys (Mr. Burnett's closest to my age) & the original Apes movies were WAY cool when I was a lad! Sure, most of the sequels may come off as "TV movies" to you (&, while I rewatch all of them, most of the sequels come off as shite), but 1, 2 & 4 were REALLY revolutionary for what were considered "family adventure" films. And Mark Burnett was also right on the "restored" version of "Conquest" - if Fox had the stones to release that cut, well, it would either have gone down in flames or it would've been hailed as a sci-fi "Taxi Driver". It was that damned gutsy Now, I do love the reboots (they've been the most successful reboots of this current pack of them), but Disney/Fox should've resisted the temptation to do this new one. I just wasn't that fired up for a new "Apes" saga & if your consensus holds true, this film is as middling as they come. Sadly, all sagas must end, at least for a while, & "Apes" is no different.

Everything I’m hearing about Kingdom leads me to believe that it’s good. It may not have the pathos of the recent trilogy, but it sounds like a good continuation of the series. I adore Planet of the Apes, it's my favourite trilogy of all time. I cannot get tired of it and I'm in complete awe of Andy Serkis as Caesar. I love this world very much. I love the fact that the central theme of the trilogy has always revolved around empathy in some way. Can you empathise with someone that isn't your species? Can you imagine yourself in this conflict? Can you find empathy in your enemy? It's remarkable stuff. I saw the early screening of Kingdom and came away rather disappointed. The movie was rather plot heavy instead of character-focused as it should be. I didn't really find myself to be invested in any of the characters as they weren't as fleshed out as much as they should have been, or they were lacking in screen time. And too much time was dedicated to the human subplot which infuriated me because it just undermined the ending of the third film. I think the creators of Kingdom were too afraid to imagine a world without humans, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO SEE! But we didn't get that.

This was also the case when they created RISE. The Serkis trilogy would act as a new "Prime" origin that will eventuate ultimately with the world of the 1968 movie. In mine, and other Classic Apes fans mind, all the original sequels from BENEATH onward still work, since the Ape-onauts in ESCAPE altered the timeline when they came back in time to 1973, causing the Ape Revolution to happen much earlier in history than originally recorded, with Baby Milo becoming CAESAR. I JUST watched the 2010s PotA remakes, and was surprised to find that I _loved_ them! The concept was something _new_ that I hadn’t seen before, and Fringy is right, Serkis’s performance as Caesar was _phenomenal_ and SO moving. I just watched Kingdom last night… and I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5. It was a fun one-time-watch adventure movie, an enjoyable theater experience, but nothing _special_ like Dawn, Rise, and War were. I felt like Dawn introduced a fascinating NEW concept that was really _well done._ I felt like Rise was a really smart and meaningful “next chapter”. And I felt that War was a great conclusion to Caesar’s story. I cried when he died! But I didn’t feel like there was anything new in Kingdom. It was predictable. And worse than that, one of the best parts of Serkis’s performance in Dawn, Rise, and War was the _incredible_ animation of his facial expressions. Every little expression was captured, and it made me absolutely invested in his character and moved by his every emotion. I felt like that was lacking in Kingdom. They just weren’t as… Expressive. Which is sad.

While it could move slowly at certain points (dozed off briefly towards the end), it was refreshing to watch a film that wasn’t trying its hardest to sUbVeRt my ExPeCtAtIoNs. It’s not an adrenaline blockbuster, nor is it a philosophical tour de force-but it was earnest in its own way.

the new ape movie is mid , rush the story a bit even when it is a 2hr long movie, dont really get enough time to explore the characters, there are interesting idea in this movie, like the apes wanting to build a kingdom like the human did ,the possible rise and return of humanity , and can the human and apes coexit or even can they trust each other...but the execution is not done well it feel like a chunk of the movie got cut, it is doing the mystery box to set up plots for the next movie. amother flaw of this movie is that now most of the apes can just talk, so it cant really do the first movie moment when caeser say NO, in the trilogy it is hard for the apes to talk, so in the new moive when the ape speak are less impactfully

Rod Serling made the Twilight zone. Arguably the best sci-fi series to appear up until that point. Maybe the best series of all time. And he took everything he learned from it and he rolled it into Planet of the Apes. The best Sci-fi writer director of all time at the peak of his game. And the result was Planet of the Apes. And then he left. And everything has been an echo of an echo of an echo since. I mean I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the people trying to make the movie now. But Rod Serling was like Shakespeare and these guys are like me. It's just never even going to be close.

If you want Shakespeare and apes, the Caesar Trilogy of PotA movies is right up your alley, especially _Dawn._ Beautiful, character-based movies with plenty of pathos.

Watched it last night. Good movie. His direction was different than Matt Reeves, obviously, but it’s a new tone that is welcome for the new era it takes place in.

9:05 In Serkis' campaign to get nominated for the Oscars as an actor for the CGI roles he was involved in, he proceeded to trash and completely ignore all the VFX people who worked on it. Most of the animation in the characters Serkis has worked with had to be done from scratch by animators. It isn't true and has never been true that the motion capture process just grabs whatever Serkis is doing in set and translates it to the CGI character. Animators at a minimum had to retouch it and more often than not had to do the animation from scratch just using what Serkis did in set as reference. It's so disappointing to see how effective Serkis' propaganda campaign has been that to this day people are still repeating this nonsense that he should have gotten an Oscar. No he shouldn't have, unless he has to share it with everyone who made the performance possible. And the argument I always hear from people who won't know anything about animation is comparing it to editing, makeup, lighting, etc. when those departments/people do not actually create performances, whereas animators literally do.

The reboot trilogy was just SO good that Kingdom really has big shoes to fill. Youre doing yourself a real disservice by not watching the reboot trilogy. Caesar and Koba are two of the best characters we've seen in this century. Rise is a decent movie but Dawn and War are truly GOOD films.
