I worked as a landscaper for years, this one summer my boss hired this college student and he was the type of person who knew everything and never asked questions, I think he thought it made him look dumb or weak to ask questions. After about 2 weeks of working there he messed up big time. He was supposed to mix the 2 cycle with 5 gallons of gas. We had the bottles of 2 cycle that the whole bottle mixed with 5 gallons made the ratio we needed for the weed whackers, blowers, saws, whatever. He poured the gas into the blue gas can but didn't add the oil, then he topped off the 4 leaf blowers, we were doing spring cleanup so we used the blowers more than anything. 3 of us grab the blowers and start going, one by one they each died. All within about 10 minutes of each other. We quickly realized the problem but it was to late the damage was done to 3 of the 4. We were able to dump out the 4th gas tank since it had not been run yet.

I had a 1962 lawn boy lawn mower that my brother in-law borrowed when I wasn't home. he ran it out if gas and put regular gas in it. it locked up the engine. I shot some WD-40 in the cylinder and got it to free up and got it running. I used for 10 years after that.

Interesting! I was given a FS260C by a family friend and told they had run it on fuel without enough oil in it. Basically they ran out of two stroke oil and put what they had in it and said. That will do. It ran less than a minutes and ceased. The Stihl shop said beyond economical repair. This machine cost in excess of $1500. So I pulled it apart and found a hole in the piston and and ring pieces everywhere including blocking the crank shaft. To my surprise I washed out the crap in a parts washer, found the bore was still perfect. I replaced the piston (which was hard to find) and put it back together and it works fine. If it was a cheap machine I may not have bothered but glad I made the effort to save it.

I like to buy the cans of pre-mixed fuel/oil. Yeah, it's a lot more expensive than mixing myself but it's in a small sealed container so it's not going to go bad on the shelf, and the containers are small enough I'll use it up before it goes bad once I open it. If I was a professional, the economics of mixing my own might make sense, but for just an average homeowner, pre-mix is the way to go.

FS38 owners manual cover has a picture, the model #, and a warning to read the first 13 pages of Warnings. Buried on the bottom of page 5 are 4 lines that say it takes mix. Stihl should put on the cover MUST MIX GAS WITH 2 STROKE OIL 50:1. I have 4 Chainsaws, a Lawn Boy, 2 trimmers, 2 outboards, a Yamaha jet boat and two motocross that have two strokes so it is inexcusable to run straight gas but for a newbie, put the most important warning in front. Even cover the gas filler with a sticker.

@@Hellcat71782It’s only obvious if you know the difference to begin with. You know, I know, everyone who has been around 2-cycle engines SHOULD know, but there are a ton of people out there who know NOTHING about small engines. Maybe they grew up in an apartment, and this is their first exposure to a 2-cycle engine. THE MANUFACTURERS ALSO KNOW that some of their customers are not educated about engines. Since getting this wrong will instantly kill a new engine, the manufacturers owe it to this segment of their market to PROMINENTLY post a warning on the fuel filler and the owner’s manual. It ‘s not for us - it’s for the newly. Of course, some folks just flat refuse to read ANY instructions, and probably deserve what they get. We all know them…

I have a leaf blower (ECHO) that my late brother purchased back in the early 1980s that I still use today. It has always had a 32:1 ratio oil gas mixture in it. Still running great. I never use LESS than a 32:1 ratio mixture in 2 cycle engines. The only lubrication a 2-cycle engine gets is the oil you put in the fuel. To me, a 40 or 50 to 1 ratio is just not enough lubrication. PS. I had a neighbor that bought a New string trimmer and always bought the Premixed 50:1 oil gas mixture in it. The trimmer lasted for ONE month after the warranty then LOCKED up. .

I use 32:1 on old steel sleeve engines and 40-42:1 on modern Nikasil cylinder engines. Use a direct through the carb (engine running) decarbonizer a couple times a year and the equipment will last 10x longer before even needing a quick ring swap. Lastly don’t womp womp on and off the throttle all the time. Let ‘um eat at full power often and the carbon accumulation will be much less. People clog their engines with carbon and reduce lifespan simply because they don’t give’um full beans and let them run out to high speed. I have a couple of 2-cycle pump engines that run at 75-90% power for many many hours continuous and they hardly accumulate any appreciable carbon.

My son 2 years ago (12yrs old) put straight gas in my craftsman weedeater. I was so angry when i heard bc i figured my 1yr old weedeater was trashed. It runs just fine! I can't believe it. I just need need to clean the carb bc i forgot to winterize it this past winter and its running like crap at low rpm.

I've had about 6 years with the Kohler 7000 series on my zero turn. Mow over 5 acres weekly with it. Only engine problem was a leak in valve cover gasket. Dealer said to use a tube of form a gasket material because replacement gasket was unavailable. Thats held for 5 years. Change oil and filters each season and I starts strong.

Very often a cylinder kit will NOT fix this problem, as the straight gasoline may have also caused scoring of the con-rod / crankshaft big end as well,.. therefore it's just better to 'junk it; and start again with a whole new unit. Next time put a big red tag on it that states GAS/OIL MIX FUEL ONLY!

I remember the old Robbins weed eater. The ultimate idiots machine. We had one at work. The new kids would fill with straight gas and it locks up. Take it apart, use muriatic acid on cylinder to dissolve aluminum on the liner, sand off scores on piston, add new rings and presto. They screwed that thing up so many times I could fix it in 30-40 minutes. Even kept a couple sets of rings in my desk drawer. You will not do that with the new crap. I think the boss said it was brought back from the dead something like 12-15 times.

I got an MS261 that was new and straight gassed for nothing, so I threw on a Hyway Nikasil Pop Up Cylinder Piston KIT and it has cut many cord since. The piston in that was so severe that it was actually melted(missing chunks), so by far the worst I had ever seen. I have saved a few that were straight gassed but turned off quickly, but no saving that piston or cylinder on that saw!!

An honest mistake. My way to avoid this is to use a container that is clear. I use old 1\2 gal booze bottles. Then you can see the premix in there. It usually has a color blue, red, green or some enhance the gas color. Like the Polaris ves. Its easy to see the oil is there. Using regular gas cans is ok too but to really know, I like to see the color in there. Like Donny said one day after mixing it, he held it up to the Canadian sunshine and said. "A beautiful blue mix". A suggestion.
