We have good progress with the ongoing engine builds and get the VR6 ready to dummy build. The MS-RT is back from the dealer, plus we have an engine in that’s supposed to have had a build, you won’t believe what we found inside after noises within 5 miles

That's really bad what's happened to the guy with that Alfa engine, he's been totally burned by whoever did do that to him, hopefully you'll put a huge smile back on his face once you've sorted out the mess.

Yeah too right the owner of the Alfa should threaten to take them to court as thats fraudulent practice! And the more people who know about it means other people won't fall into the same trap so please name and shame the business. But your right when Barum do a proper job it will be mint!

A mate of mine had a Vauxhall Cavalier for years, he always changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Never had any trouble with it. Engine oil breaks down with heat, change it regular.

With the 8 valve sohc engines you needed to change the oil because the oil drillings to the cam lobes blocked and you got a very rattly top end.Great engines though untill you run one a bit hot and the cam carrier warps and nips the camshaft up and strips the belt.Not the end of the world because they were non interference heads.I prefered them to a ford pinto.

Considering the intake valves kissed the pistons, I would be inclined to replace them. Extra cost but you can not be certain of how much stress they endured. A friend of mine had a Pontiac with a Chev (GM corporate) engine. Everyone considered them a crap engine. Small bore 350, but the cams were ground with 0.050" less intake lift. He changed his oil every 1500 miles. The plastic timing gear failed so he had a mild cam installed at the same time. The car had over 400,000km when he died and ran great. Heads were never off. Fram used to have an advert on the telly; "pay me now or pay me later". Seems to have worked for my late buddy.

The Busso V6 is a great engine but there are things that must be done properly when working on it. As mentioned, the seals on the liners if the engine is coming apart, timing it with the camshaft locking tools, and correct tension of the belt and ensuring the belt and the tensioner, idlers and pulleys are all perfect and running smoothly as the rear cam in particular can skip teeth if not. I ran one in a late model 164 for nearly 20 years and stayed well on top of the maintenance myself once I'd dealt with some poor quality work before my ownership. Still have my cam locking tools and my personally fabricated crankshaft pulley holding tool in the toolbox too.

old guy from Canada here. Like your stuff. You are the kind of folks I would do business with if you were in my neighborhood. I quite like the bits you cover when things go wrong and what you do to get back on track. you mentioned the salt on the cars and I wonder if you folks put undercoating on your autos. I think what is used here is a vegetable based (no danger to environment) oily grease that is sprayed all over the underside of the cars and up inside the doors to prevent rusting. It adds years to the life of cars here as we het months of salty roads. Also has an advantage of making things like tie rod ends and break bolts easier to remove if required.

Volkswagen-Audi want you to believe they were the first to come up with the canted-inline engine such as the VR6, Passat, Toureg etc. But in reality there was a French manufacturer back in the mid 20's called S.C.A.P. and they had a canted inline 8 cylinder engine, and I don't even know if they were the FIRST to come up with it!

Here in Australia I’ve got one of those 2.0 Ford Ecoblue engines in our Ford Endura. Recommended service for oil is 15,000 km. (9200 miles) I do it half way in between at 7500km. Cheap insurance.

to properly time that alfa engine you MUST use special locking tools to lock the cams. without that its impossible to time it properly and its EXTREMELY sensitive to having the timing even slighty off. but if everyhting is right on that engine it will just sing the busso song that can and should be heard for miles at 7000rpm.

Mazda MZR engines kind of like that. The back of the cams have a slot for a plate and a pin goes in a threaded hole in the block for the Crankshaft TDC location. None of the timing gears are keyed to the crank or cams. Retaining bolt torque provides the clamp load and seems to work. Makes me nervous as a long tail cat in a seniors sunroom full of rocking chairs.

@@daledavies2334 BMW has been doing that sort of thing since the early 90's, cam lock tools and pins for the crank. Turns out it's not as accurate as actually measuring when TDC happens and when cam lift timing happens. Everyone says "has to be exact", and "have to use factory tools", but a decent engine builder, with the right tools and using the right method, will get it much more precise than factory, as long as they have the adjustment they need.

That’s why I stick with the 12v Alfa v6, so much easier to set up, plus the 4 cam being more expensive as far as head parts and valve train. Plus I like the looks of the 12v 😁

As an American, I consider that a shitty, poorly engineered engine that should not be manufactured except for specific uses. Was that the case for this engine. I know very little about Alfas. I'm curious? What is the torque it produces at 2500 RPM. In ft-lbs, please. Absolutely not being critical here. But from my car enthusiast upbringing. We would have thought, and I still think, this "Busso sound" is like a motorcycle engine. It appears too many "special tools" are required to consider this a great engineering design. In the US we can make thousands of HP without any special tools. Just sayin'.

@@msmeyersmd8 the 3.2 V6 does 250hp and 300nm/220lbs at 5000rpm and does not stop until it gets to 7k rpm. there was also a DTM racing version of this engine that did 420hp at nearly 12k rpm without a turbo. note that these engines are top heavy, so they are high rpm engines compared to the raw iron low speed american engines that only want to run at idle. that is why the max torque gets free at 5k instead of 2.5k. but that does make these engines very economical for american standards. you can find it shit but these engines only needed a new belt every 80k miles and the plugs also lasted 80k and you basically only need to do oil every 10~15k or so. all while being considerably more economical and less polluting to american counterpart engines.

For every 1000 workshops who deal with engine rebuilding there's 1 bad apple that spoils it . The Alfa engine is now with the professionals . And will be brought back to life the correct way . Wow , this jeep engine must be someones Love interest. To get this munch reincarnation effort . Given there's 2 cyl yard equip stuff w/better power that weigh 10% of this iron chunk. But's classic evidence anything (mechanical) can be fixed with enuf time and sponsership

I think the real reason for those extended services is lease companies looking to reduce costs. My thinking is you can’t do any harm changing the oil and filters more often than recommended intervals

Stuff enclosed in plastic will go rusty due to condensation! It's all at the mercy of the relative humidity.

I've always dropped a handful of dry ice in the bag when something needs to be stored for a bit. The dry ice drives out the majority of the O2 / H2O and reduces that rust build up spoke about.

Ha ha 6 month ain't going to tell you much about the vans engine... I've got an 03 vivaro 1.9 dti and it's a champ... I've known it for 19 years and I can say it's great but has its problems..🙂 but what 19 year old doesn't, and I love it just the same...even if the recent cold is upsetting it in the morning..

Its the other way round Porsche has had major engine problems since the 996 water-cooled era and in fact they are more reliable now than they were. The rubber belts fail running in oil due to contact with aromatics. Regular changes with correct spec oil is a good move as you suggest.

I remember once this guy came into our shop, with smoke bellowing out from underneath his bonnet. He asked us to have a look at it since he had only just picked it up from another mechanic. I popped the bonnet thinking perhaps the idiot had just spilt oil all over the exhaust manifolds. But nope it was coming out from the oil cap and the filler tube specifically. Barely pulled out the dipstick and i immediately saw that incredibly bright orange glow shining up the tube from even beneath all that smoke, the bottom end was either glowing hot or burning. Jammed it back in and told him to just take it straight back to them, something was very very wrong. I had to refuse any kind of help coming from us. I didn't want anything to do with it.

As for your van and services here in Australia there are a lot of mechanics are useing 20/50 oil in Hyundai and it seized up the cam and snap end of the cam, people are thinking their doing the rite thing and their car's are failing, and customers can't do much, all the best to yous and your loved ones

Hi,I bought a 2014 mitsubishi lancer and the initial oil change was recommended at 7500ks. Being an older man I was used to changing the oil at 1000ks on a new car. I did this and then again at 4500ks and at 6500ks. I then went to the 7500k intervals. The car runs perfectly and this initial time and money spent will pay off in the future. I do not believe in extended oil change intervals. Oil and filters are cheaper than mechanical components. Good luck to all

My favorite though was building the engines for the big prime movers like Cummins and Detroits. Telling our customers it would be $80k+ for a complete engine rebuild, and having them whine about the cost and that it was cheaper with the Dealerships who charged $40k. We told them to go for it and to come back after it failed if they wanted to get it done properly. Vast majority always came back a month or two later demanding to know why it failed and how we knew.

I paid roughly $38,000 for an in frame a few years ago, also replaced a bunch of wear items in that price. Well, 70,000 miles later, the #5 liner fretted, took out my brand new head... The dealer, a Cummins authorized shop, said they would look at it... I said no, I will fix it myself. Come to find out, they installed many wrong parts, the parts man transposed the ESN. I did rebuild it myself, the dealer sent me $15,000 in the correct parts, my buddy had the tool to cut the ledges for the liners, which the first shop did not do, they simply tossed the liners in. I used Cummins Quickserve on my iPhone to rebuild the motor, all of the torque specs and procedures are there for free, simply register you ESN with them. That was a few years ago, and she is still running like a Swiss watch.

@@michaelwright1602 The problem they have is that they pretty much just do an engine swap and that's it in the dealerships. They don't rebuild the Turbo and Fuel Injector Pump. They don't replace all hoses and clamps. They don't remove and clean the Coolant Top Tank, Radiator, Intercooler and Condenser Radiators. They don't remove and clean the fuel tanks when it is necessary or even clean or replace the fuel lines. They don't rebuild the Air Pump and scrub out its pneumatic air lines and numerous tanks. There is so much work that the dealerships do not do and the customers wonder why the $40k engine blew up again within the month.

Good day ,love the channel from Vancouver Canada. When doing a cylinder head ,are all surfaces cleaned .?? Of course skimming it but what about cleaning exhaust and intake manifold side ?? .cheers 🍺

not sure if its from regen as there is a recall on them, also ford will replace the engine if the belt fails so sounds more likely its something else

I absolutely believe what you've found inside.. or didn't find should I say. I've seen this way more times than I'd like to, some muppet charging a customer an arm and a leg for a supposed engine rebuild and doing next to nothing in reality.. this is why people don't trust mechanics and I don't fault them for it, there's a lot of those scam mechanics out there unfortunately.

The challenge is "to trust and verify" (Yes I know its difficult to verify a maching job when everythings reassembled, however homework and visual inspection should be carred out on any busiess that claims to provide a critical service)

With the amount of transit thefts. I would look at installing a kill switch. I install iso relays with 5 pins. 30 and 86 from which ever circuit you decide to cut into. 87 to the rest of the circuit. 85 to a long wire with a switch on the end. The other side of the switch is grounded. On 87a i run that to a 130db horn. So if anybody gets the ignition on without flipping the kill switch. The horn goes off. On work vans and trucks. I mount a 1/2" cargo ring thru a slot in the door panel . A chain to the seat base adjusted so i can only get the door open far enough to get my arm in to lock or unlock the padlock. There are around 100 cars stolen daily in los angeles. They have tried to steal my work van 7 times. With youtubers selling lock picks for transits . Nothing is safe. A close friend installed a second relay to cut power to the electronic parking brake.

I'd change those inlet valves in the Alfa even if they are not bent, the metal must have been under stress due to the contact and might have been weakened

they are bent guaranteed If you can see ANY marking and often even when you can't they valves are scrap (I would automatically do pistons as well)

Same thing happened to me with my Porsche 997 3.8 rebuild payed a local company and the never put in gudgin clip in cylinder five and cracked the cylinder when trying to fit the liner . Avoid endurance engines hillinton Glasgow

Thanks for Yet Anothere Brilliant vidclip ..... WOW .... !!!!! That Alfa engine 'Story' is absolutely disgusting .... There always those that will try to Rip someone off and take All the 'Short-Cuts'. I am on the wrong side of 70 and have had my share of Alfas too, All just the 1600cc 4 cylinder ones, all back in CT South Africa .... Really good engines, but needs constant attention .... 'Very Continental' ..... :-) :-) :-), but they go like a 'Scolded Cat' when set up correctly .... Trying to tune the 2 Twin Webber yourself was alway a Real Pain .... Manufacturers are now specifying very thin oils to meet ever-increasing emission targets, at the expense of reliability it seems. A VW/Audi specialist I follow on KZfaq is seeing wear issues where they previously didn't exist and recommends using the older, thicker oils which offer better protection.

This should have had a Motor Engineer Report done by a reputable company first before any further repairs were carried out Long process involving small claim court but the owner of that engine I am sure will recuperate all the first expense and able to claim for the second repair too Was that done or did he end up paying again and not claim anything?

shorter engine oil intervals defo work my 1.8 blacktop ford engine has done 180k miles always believed oil should be changed every 6k 20k is just ridiculous always changed oil sooner than manufacturers recomend a can of oil and a decent filter is a dam sight cheaper than a engine reckon someones timed the alfa v6 without the right cam lock tools

Rebuilt a Chevy Aveo it had 62k on it with a 60k warranty and two teeth came off the timing belt. It bent all 8 exhaust valves and I had to replace all the pistons. The dealer said you have to replace the timing belt every 40k so they wouldn't cover anything. This engine had so much aluminum flash on the castings inside the engine, it was total garbage.

On the Alfa the liners can be rotated 90deg if they have worn slightly oval. The conrods are a weakness in these Busso engines and there is a H beam rod available that is much stronger, which then compliments the existing crank allowing around 1000rpm at the top end.

Looks like the Alfa engine 'rebuild' was a total cowboy job, as you say if it cost a few hundred fair enough but they obviously got charged for a recondition not a rebuild and even then they screwed the timing up and trashed the valves.

yea man there out there specialists where they take lots of labour hrs and not a lot of new parts rtv everywhere no doubt i bet i had a 2.7tdv6 range rover come on a truck running blowing compression out the inlet valve after a engine rebuild customer stated it had had a full engine rebuild i said it must have spun a con rod bearing its the only way that can happen to one valve or she's spun a lobe on the cam but as they do they start to reveal there secrets the further i stripped the more bolts i found missing cam cover bolts pretty essential on the range rover especially for keeping boost on the inlet also lol any way got the head off everything was timed and other than the very rear drivers side piston had made contact with one inlet valve didn't see any disasters other than missing bolts and rtv gaskets everywhere and also a strange copper substance everywhere so i said right lets get this guy on the phone and i said you would be better coming in and bring the invoice they gave you for the engine rebuild doesn't look like this has had full rebuild to me he said it definitely has i supplied them the parts i even delivered them to them i said what did you give them timing belt kit 2 head gaskets and bolts so i suggested this engine be sent for machining and an actual rebuild quoted up to 15 k and as i thought he sent a truck to pick it back up i sent it away and send tell them to pay the bill here first lol so i loved you this engine is ready and just needs paid its a hard old game this motor trade good point also on the custom it is the highest selling vehicle in the uk and most of these problems with them are due to extended servicing now long life oils being ruined and diluted with poor quality diesel to begin with and cheap add blue quality stuff barum engine's even into world war 2 jeep engines have agreat day

Shocking that Alfa engine, regardless of how slight the valves touched the pistons, they must be replaced.

Freaks me out. Everything is so small. I run Ford FEs,and one 200 ci.Wish they had made a Cosworth head for mine.I guess that's kinda lke trying to find a Dunstall head for my 69 Bonnie.The FE is the only engine I know of to go from pushrod to cammer with the addition of a 7' chain.

I was told that there’s a chain conversion kit, for the rubber belt in the transits, it’s a terrible design, to submerge a rubber belt in oil 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️.

What VR6 stuff you do? Always good to have an engineering firm in mind should the modified idiot VR6 need love which running 1000+hp is a certainty and not a possibility 🤣

The engineer at Ford who decided it was a good idea to put a rubber belt in with the oil wants shooting!! It has made all Ford Eco engines a disaster case. The rubber debris from the rubber belt blocks the oil pick up strainer and starves the engine of oil!! Why didn’t they use a chain if they want to put it in the oil area? No self respecting German engineer would do such a thing!! BTW Ford do some good engines like the Coyote.

If I were you I would replace the engine in the Transit , it is a pile of crap design allowing diesel into the lubricating oil where the even more stupidly placed belt sits. That is a bigger grenade than swirl flaps, plastic impellers etc. Imop.
BMW E46 M3 lasts 2 days and blows up. We inspect but what we find…
