What's the best depth for aerodynamic road bike wheels? Should you mix your rim depths?

We've teamed up with Cadex Cycling to examine whether mixing mid- and deep-section wheel rims will provide you with a performance advantage when you ride. Should your wheels always match or is, to adopt a mountain-biking term, a mullet bike the way forward for road riders? Do you run a business at the front and party at the back set up on your road bike? Let us know in the comments.

"Light Bicycle" brand 56mm deep carbon rim brake tubeless clinchers. Fully customized rim drillings ( front 18 spoke radial laced, rear 27 spoke 2:1 triplet lacing) . Built myself with RS400 (Tiagra) Shimano 36 hole hubs which are super cheap to buy and maintain. Amazing wheels for my 90kg body weight (criterium sprinter, don't care about wind at all)

As mentioned in the video, studies suggested that the biggest aero gains are unlocked when moving from a box section wheel to an aero profile, even if the profile is shallow. Going from a shallow or mid aero profile to a deeper profile only brings residual gains on top of that. Also, most of the aero advantage are verified on the front wheels, with the air being already quite dirty when it reaches the back wheel due to the front wheel, frame and the spinning legs. Based on those 2 facts, I really suspect the gains of running a deeper rear wheel must be pretty marginal (if measurable at all). There is even an argument to run a deeper wheel in the front (when aerodynamics are more affected) and a shallower rear wheel, when aero is less important. Overall, I think that there is little advantage on running different depths front and rear. If you ride mostly in the flats and in good weather, go for a deeper section. If you ride in a windier and hillier region, stick with a low or medium depth wheel and you will be compromising very little.

i ride 60mm deep section wheels easier to hold higher speed and hellish in the slightest climb. aero benefit will not affect me much at my speed at 30kmph lmao

No problem zipp 858 on the back 454 up front - paid for by working in Uae where that is the stock make the rear the sail with the winds out there - back on Pennines it still applies for me

I'm gonna test 65mm ENVE wheels, and if I don't like how it handles in the cross winds, I'll get a set of mid-section wheels as an alternate pair. It's normally only windy in D.C. during the fall and winter anyway, so we'll see how it goes.

Everyone knows about doing deeper on the rear bc of less drama in crosswinds but I went the other way. The Roval CLC 50s are easy to use in crosswinds so there’s no reason to not use it on the front. The front wheel is much more important in terms of drag so I went with 32s in the rear to save weight.
@kidsafe
@kidsafe 2 жыл бұрын
If you’re in a situation where aero matters at all, you’re better off going deeper in the rear. Weight hardly matters. 1W saved from aero on 6% climb at 300W is equivalent to about 300g.
@sportbikejesus6297
@sportbikejesus6297 2 жыл бұрын
@@kidsafe the rear wheel experiences less aero benefit than the front and the wheels already experience a tiny fraction of the overall aero of the bike/rider combo.
@kidsafe
@kidsafe 2 жыл бұрын
@@sportbikejesus6297 That's why I used a modest 1W gain, which is still equivalent to hundreds of grams. You are better off using the deepest wheel you can get away with in the rear if the segment dictates going with a deep front wheel.

I have a pair of 50 mm deep wheels on my bike, , I actually find that some of the deepest section wheels , don’t look nice to me. Also whilst they are effected by cross winds, but not as much I assume than wheels with a deeper rim depth.

i don't race, so i don't need aero wheels .. shallow wheels work best for me, they're light and good for climbing and sidewinds.

The reason is speed. The first 3 I cjes are physically close to the tire which moves through the frame at the speed of the bicycle. The deeper levels are going half your traveling speed, so there is less drag, and, the area close to the frame is spaced out better and is off the ground and farther down from your body.

My true madone has 62mm great unless the wind is above 30mph. Even then I can hsndle it but I way 110 kg. Deep front shallow rear would be faster on hilly routes without winds? I descend at uptown 60mph and have no issues.

@Penalist

With the 650b wheel you can use a bigger tyre, with more damping capabilities - which in turn largely negates the size difference between the 650b and 29er wheels

Weight is irrelevant as various studies have shown. Go as deep as your climate slows you to go without getting blown off like a kite.
@okreidieh
@okreidieh 2 жыл бұрын
Weight is relevant to acceleration and climbing. The issue is that the weight difference constitutes a small percentage of the total bike/ rider/ equipment system. But if that small difference ends up being the difference between you being able to accelerate and hold the wheel in front or lag behind and have to fight the wind .... You see what I'm saying ... Small differences can compound in group rides or races if they mean you lose a draft
