Cyclone acts kinda like a jerk here but he actually does have a point when he said all Maverick has accomplished so far is discouraging the candidates' confidence with how seemingly impossible the mission is instead of actually showing them that it's possible. Three candidates so far have almost got themselves killed trying it and nobody has yet to complete a full run of the training with no failures. It takes Maverick actually showing them that the mission is indeed possible in a last-ditch attempt that the pilots actually gained the confidence to fly again.

Perhaps Maverick should have demonstrated leadership by completing the run at the beginning, and giving the pilots knowledge and confidence that it is possible, SOP for many training scenarios, but then TG-M would have lost one of the greatest segments of the film.

In reality it would be far more likely that the instructor would demonstrate first and foremost that what they wanted their students to do is achievable, not letting the students try it first and only showed them how to do it once everyone is on the verge of giving up. Then again, it still has to be a movie xD. And we don’t watch Top Gun movies for too much realism, anyway. We watch it for entertainment and by saving Maverick’s show for last, it delivered the moment perfectly.

@@Willy2537 also maverick got to guage how good the pilots are by doing the dog fight simulations in the beginning and oh boy mav though he sucked against viper... these kids suck compared to mav. viper would smoke these kids like ... blindfolded lol

“Cyclone” Should be dishonorably discharged for conduct unbecoming of an officer. His behavior at any point in the film would be inexcusable in the actual Navy.
