It could be a tempest in a teapot especially if its exclusively an Islamic organization. The rest of the Caucus is not Chechnya. If it has popular support where this was just the warning shot then its huge. Whether they look like Russians or not, its a core area. For Chechnya, a lot of Russians would like to give it independence to be rid of it, although its been fairly quiet of late.

In Russia there is no difference between church and state. Orthodox church is under direct control from Kremlin. Many orthodox priests even today are ex-KGB agents. Many used to be Russian mafia mobsters in 90's who now work for Putin directly. Attack on Orthodox church (in Russia) is attack on Kremlin, because they are the same thing. You can look into it more if you wish, but long story simplified: Orthodox church was destroyed during Russian revolution. During communism it didn't even exist in Russia, but when Putin came to power he brought it back to serve his cause.

This either ISIS-K or al-Qaeda showing force on local manner (considering massive casualties among law enforcers) or new local separatists letting everyone know about their existence and arming themselves (therefore so much attack against police forces with looting of weapons and ammunitions). Dagestan is unique place: Russians took this land from Persians in 18th century, for this day there is no dominating ethnic majority, there is still Mountain Jewish minority, it inhabitant by less than 3.2 million people, despite being de jure autonomous republic it is strictly under Moscow's control (through Kremlin's appointed local government) and this is one of the poorest regions of Russia.

My background. In Yugo before Tito died. Master at organization. The top government spots rotated between the regions in set times. Large amount of weapons. I said when Tito would die, it would be worse than WW2. How remote? I witnessed the finish of the first paving from Dubrovnick to the capital. In Afghanistan in the 1970s. 5 main ethnic groups. Everyone knew his or her place. Even the women were armed to the teeth.Also peaceful. Most people in the world are individually very nice. Americans largely don't understand clan cultures and a lot of people don't have a sense of nationality.
@mfallen2023

Clans are a very foreign concept in the US. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of clans in the US would be gangs or cults. Not trying to be disrespectful, that's really just the closest we really have here that's ever really encountered. I guess there are the Amish; I live in a small rural town and about 15 miles away there's an Amish community of about ~80 people. They're pretty isolated & insulated. Only time I ever really interact with them is when I buy something from their bakery/produce general store thing. They seem like nice & happy people, but sadly they're viewed as an anachronistic freak-show by most people... Refusing to embrace modernity/being Luddites is probably the main reason they're looked at with suspicion (maybe even pity, ironically, as I'm sure they look at us the same way) One thing America definitely lacks is community. Individualism is a good thing in many ways, but the US is becoming hyper-individualistic to a fault.

To your point about the ruling coalition holding its own loyal forces in reserve rather than liquidate them in Ukraine: perhaps this attack against the police was in response to efforts to arrest and forcibly conscript non-ruling ethnic groups into military service. And to your point about Afghanistan really being a collection of independent tribal alliances rather than a single nation state: there are some (rough) parallels here to the Russian Federation. It's a bit wishful to think that a single cohesive revolution or civil war encompassing all of Russia will simply break out, but it's very conceivable that we could see civil wars foment once again in the peripheral states such as Dagestan. As for ISIS and other organized groups, it would be fascinating to know if they have gone to any efforts to "turn" Chechen and Dagestani troops fighting for Russia in Syria and Ukraine, who have come home in the thousands bloodied and ready to take arms against the state.

The synagogue was burned down. And there was targeting on the orthodox Church too. BUT I agree with you that this seems to be mainly aimed at the authority, and the symbols of anything external, it doesn't matter how long the Jewish community has been there, they will still be external to the people around them. The fact that the Orthodox Church was targeted and that the priest had his throat slit, also speaks towards going against the federal level authority. As such this might be more an expression of resistance towards the authorities and the war in Ukraine, specifically the war that has killed so many Dagestani's (in disproportionate numbers by I think a factor of 600? Compared to the two major Russian regions)... Given the previous riots and disaffection that has come out of that region in the last few months, I would not be surprised if you are correct. Having said that, ISISK does not always take credit, or immediate credit, for actions they have actually done. Many of the actions attributed to these terrorists, fit the profile of an ISISK attack

No country has any real hope of modern nationhood until they can rally around a central administration/government that has the majority of the nation's subjects' interests at heart. No real infrastructure can happen without centralized governance. Whether it's one central government and/or many regional governments. But those regional governing bodies still have to answer to a central government that oversees laws, quality of life, infrastructure, taxation, personal liberties. A secular, majority supported government can bring peace and prosperity where tribalism can't.

The message to the state is that "you can't protect anyone around here. Your time is running out so you better leave." These places are remote and largely lawless. If the strongman starts showing weakness then there's someone waiting to take his place. They don't necessarily care about the Ukrainians or the Russians or geopolitics. They only care if it affects their goals. Those areas of the world are older than the Bible. They play by ancient rules that still apply. It's best to leave them alone.

Interesting example you used to explain how internal ethnic rivalries work. As an American, whether not you mixed up the group names means nothing. Thank God we Americans still work together whether we're from Ohio, Florida, or Texas, are Catholic, Mormon, athiest, or support Auburn or Alabama. How sad would it be if those things truly divided us. (I know politics might be different, though it really shouldn't be). I remember being about 30 when I had an epiphany. I went to Arizona State, and therefore, fuck the Arizona Wildcats. I was at Sun Devil stadium watching the Territorial Cup when it suddenly hit me. At least all the Wildcat fans love college football too. The sport that I first fell in love with at age 7 and will always love, they love it too. Since then, when I see rival fans, I joke with them, because I know that when the game is on, they'll be watching too.

As a quick FYI, Dagestan is not a "region" of russia! Instead, it is a republic part of the ru Federation. The same way Texas is not a region of the USA. Legally? Ohhh buddy this may lead to some serious change if the kremlin loses its grips... Furthermore, it's a republic rich in oil, natural gas, coal, and many other minerals.

Dagestan has/had the greatest Freestyle wrestlers in history. Currently we-USA- are maybe the best freestyle wrestlers-as a team-despite the fact that our wrestlers -wrestle HS/COLLEGIATE wrestling-with a different style now called "folk style wrestling" which was a term near used when I wrestled-1964-1973 HS College-never heard that term. In any case all the Russian wrestlers of note-were actually from Dagestan-Buvaisar Saitiev-perhaps greatest freestyle wrestler in history-from Dagestan- He is now a politician-in the Russian "Duma/Senate/whatever" now-representing Dagestan-He was good beyond belief. Our guy-BEAT HIM in Olympics-flat beat him-no fluke-just beat him-everyone can be beaten like the Okies said "never a horse that ain't been rode-never a rider that ain't been Throwed". Branden Slade beat him-and safe bet-Brandon would agree-Saitiev-was a better wrestler-but not that day. In any case-Dagestan-tough as nails-

What we know is that there are 21 republics in the Russian federation. Russia is a bit distracted from the 21 that they have while trying to make it 22. Russia needs to be careful or the might end up with 20 republics instead. Ever hear the saying that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? Agreed, most terrorist organizations step up and self-identify as being responsible ASAP. Doesn't eliminate that possibility, of course. I also agree that this specific attack seems to be politically targeted more than anything else. Armed policemen, regardless of the quality of their training, would be a much MUCH tougher target than a church. Follow the money, I guess. Wait and see who seems to get something out of this.
