Dakota Co. detective stops gift card scam on lunch break

A detective from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office stopped a gift card scam in its tracks while he was on his lunch break. FOX 9's Courtney Godfrey has the story.

Why not put a large print sign on all gift card displays warning people of the possibility they may getting scamed. Especially for our older generations. "Did someone call you and tell you to get gift cards? This could be a scam. Here are some signs you might be a victim and what to do next ........" Sadly the accent of the caller can be the first clue. Is there any legitimate reason to buy gift cards only to hand the numbers over the phone?

I received a call from a man saying he was with the Policemen's Benevolent Ball and looking for donations. Just to be sure, I put him on hold and called the MPD. I was told the police don't have balls!

I feel bad for when this happens to older people that are not educated on these types of scams. Where I have no sympathy is when our fucking HR lady does it after multiple sessions of cyber security awareness training!!
