The genius of Larry Hagman that he could make evil JR comedic in a split second. The smiling assassin.

I never thought In a million years I’d ever get hooked on a prime time soap, but these two, ‘Dallas’ mostly, had the best storylines. After seeing an episode in season one, I finally realized what the fuss was all about back in the 80s.

I found it puzzling that with JR traveling to Knots Landing, how come Miss Ellie never made the trip to visit her favorite son?

well this scene took place in Dallas so J.R. didn't have to travel far. Val was on a book tour and her first stop was in Dallas. Gary was also in town after the reading of Jock's will and Abby showed up to surprised him. Even though this was an episode of Knots, Gary Val and Abby were in Dallas during this episode.

JR is a softer character on Knots Landing. More jolly. Less evil. Still devious, though. And his southern accent is thicker on Knots Landing than Dallas. Hagman probably did this on purpose. He was such a great actor.
@andrebeck14444 жыл бұрын
Actually, J.R. became a softer character after his shooting. Probably because of being a loyal and loving father to little John Ross.

The scene in which J.R. smiles back at Val after the lady asks him to sign her book is reminiscent of another scene from Dallas. The episode that spun-off Knots. JR catches Kristin with another man and JR calls the man's boss to get him fired. The man asks Kristin if she wants to be with a man like JR rather than him after what J.R. did and Kristin said YES! And J.R. looks back and the man and smiles like he did here

Gary is more innocent on Dallas than on Knots Landing. His vices are shown on Knots Landing, but on Dallas he is almost always depicted as mild, meek, brother of JR and Bobby. Gary is harder on Knots Landing. It's just the opposite with JR. He is softer on Knots Landing. Still evil, but not as hard.

He almost seemed more comical on Knots Landing, but that is one one of the things that made the character so iconic. No other character on either show had that kind of range.

Larry hagman and Donna Mills starred together in a short-lived sitcom in 1971 called, the good life. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@williamphillips60495 жыл бұрын
Larry Hagman was a versatile actor in many ways: Charming, motivated, dutiful and imaginative as Major Nelson. The same with J.R. only add nastiness and a mean streak a mile wide. You could also add a touch of vulnerability. His "attacks" on enemies were cruel, ruthless and at times; heartless. The master stroke of many of them, however, were how they could be downright HILLARIOUS!
@henryoil4 жыл бұрын
He was versatile, Hagman was as adept at comedy as playing evil. In fact, J.R. was the only character on the show that could at times be played for laughs as well as the dramatic storylines. That's a testament to Larry Hagman, who really was a funny guy with a pretty good sense of humor.
@edwardmalone52574 жыл бұрын
You're right. Hagman even shows versatility between the two shows, Dallas and Knots Landing. He is hard-cold evil on Dallas, especially the first 5 or 6 seasons. But on Knots Landing, JR is more of a legendary figure. He is evil, but happy-go-lucky. It's as if David Jacobs wanted it that way.

I posted on another video, but I feel the show had a chance for more crossovers in the 88 to 89 season. At the point Sue Ellen thought of doing her tell all film, she could have reached out to Val to turn Crude Porn... I mean Capricorn Crude (remember JR called it that once) into a movie. It could have led to Abby and Lilimae arriving in Dallas. Abby could have married JR instead of Greg Sumner, and she could have lived in Dallas' later seasons. The true paternity of the twins could have come out in the open, leading to a disastrous confrontation between Miss and Gary/Val/Lilimae for keeping her grand children in the dark

The backstory is: once Gary ran out on his marriage to Valene, after getting drunk and hitting her, Valene tried to take baby Lucy and raise her. Valene felt with no link to Southfork, the Ewings, JR especially would not want her and Lucy around. So when she took baby Lucy away with her, JR sent some "good ole boys" after them and apprehended Valene in Virginia taking back the baby and leaving Valene destitute and alone. So in answer to your question, essentially JR took Valene's child away from her and she never saw her again...that is until Lucy became old enough to find her...
