Learn how to take the golf club away in the backswing. The first move in the backswing we call the golf swing takeaway. For many golfers learning to get a great backswing takeaway feeling can transform the overall look and simplicity of your golf swing.
The downswing in golf takes just half a second to complete leaving you very little time for your body to adjust to mistakes you may have made in your golf backswing. If you can learn to perfect the golf swing takeaway and then know to how the body and the wrists work complete your golf swing the golf downswing becomes almost automatic.
In this weeks golf lesson you will learn how to develop the feel necessary to do it every time with your driver swing and your iron swing.

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On KZfaq and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumbleI’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

Outstanding Danny, thank you for extending the concepts from your last video into this one. So helpful! I'm hoping you can continue the series and share how this body driven/shift-then-swing model applies to the wedge game and longer pitches when you're not always making a full swing. Feels so good working through your drills and would love your insights to ensure I carry it forward appropriately into the shorter distances.

I've played golf 30 years and have recently realized I've done it all wrong. I got tired of not hitting my mid irons and driver as far as I should. I was a collegiate baseball athlete. I've always used short static muscle contractions for athletic performance. After watching this video, it made me realize the key to fluidity and using inertia. I've been able to shoot in the 80's but I've always scooped the ball. The key is to compress it. Danny made me realize with this video everything I've done wrong and explain in a way that absolutely clicked for the first time in my life. I am currently on lesson four with GolfTec and i didn't get the feeling until now. The rope video also helped by Mr. Maude. Anyhow, I have a FlightScope Mevo and.a hitting setup in my garage. I watched this video at work today and came home to employ the lesson. I went from hitting my 7 iron 130 yards with an average of 95 mph ball speed, to 140 yards with an average of 101 mph ball speed. It made me realize the difference between muscle contraction and fluidity. Thanks Danny!

Have never had lessons yet but after a year of trying my own self improvement , my takeaway became the main focus of improvement. The last rounds of the season were amazing and everything after the correct takeaway really does, more or less, fall in place. For me , I was take the club very far inside and flat and opening up club face so much prior to full back swing. The best drill for me personally , was thinking of another ball being behind the one you at striking , and imagine push into back in the takeaway , in a straight line, as far back as possible. Keeps the shaft on good plane and controls the club face so it doesn’t flare up too early.

Danny you have covered this in the past, other instructors have done the same thing, but have I listened - YES. Did I put it into practise - NO. Well recently I have paid a great deal of attention to this aspect of the swing and it works. I was almost afraid to do this on the course as I wanted to revert back to my rolling of the forearms in the takeaway. Recently I persisted in doing exactly what you demonstrate here and the effect was remarkable. On the downswing I did not feel the need to manipulate my hands and arms to get back to the ball as I had been doing year after year. It all became so much simpler and the result was a completely different contact with the ball, resulting in strikes that have always eluded me. What I am now doing to ingrain this into me is, at home just keep rehearing this move so it becomes second nature. This certainly is an aspect of the swing that should be taken seriously. Thanks as usual.

Yesterday was my first game of the year. We have an awesome 9-hole course here on Bowen Island. Challenging but not daunting. After practicing the Danny Maude techniques over the winter, I surprised myself. It was such a great feeling watching my ball as it seemed to fly off the club along my follow-through. It didn’t seem like I was swinging hard at all, but I out-drove a couple of our club’s ‘big hitters’. I’ve always been between 46-49 on our course… and have had a goal of Bogie-Golf…and achieved it yesterday! Thanks Danny!

Man what a great construct. I’ve been a rubbish golfer (20 hcp) for years and got so frustrated I basically stopped playing. But always had the optimism that there was no reason I shouldn’t be able to do it better (good cricketer batsmen). Watched this. Got out of bed, went to lounge found a dumbbell (yes we have those in the lounge, doesn’t everyone?!). Did my normal backswing and had arms without shoulders move as you predicted. Put the dumbbell in both hands and turned. What a difference. Right. Off to the driving range. Love optimism. As you say ingrain the memory and hope it repeats with the ball in the way…….brilliant episode thx.

this is a very good video Danny. I am anxious to get the flow of this in the gym and then take it to the range this week. Over the years I have had a lot of trouble with a handsy take-away causing a lot of inconsistency and blocks and pulls. This video is very complementary to your "Best Rotation Drill" video that I watched a couple of weeks back that I am still working on. I saw improvement right away and then a fall off. However, it is important to use the set of steps you give to make things real and see improvement.

Danny... watching your vid allowed me to find a seemingly innocuous fault that produced an "arm only takeaway". It was a "soft" right elbow at the beginning of my swing. A tiny collapse to the arm triangle - almost imperceptible, but the moment I stopped that, my swing became wider, more body connected and far more powerful...The soft "thud" on the driving net became a ball fizzing "ka-boom", just a little concentration required... Thks for your insights as always....

@@DanielMaude So after further practice, it seems to me that when I do this well, I create a very brief moment of weightlessness for my arms and hands as I initiate the downswing. Hi Danny, Love all your drills. This one reminds me of Happy Gilmore swing by moving his back foot to transfer. your weight to the back foot, then to the front foot prior to the forward swing. I found it a good drill to not rush the downswing preventing an over the top swing. Happy New Year.

Danny, Thanks for the last two videos. In my head I completely understand these concepts, have for many years. But getting the intellectual part into the body is the challenge. 3 weeks ago I was about to call it quits, Tried everything recommended to stop my over the top, arms led, flipping swing. Was able to hit it ok, but wasn't consistent. I started the "bag of shopping" exercise last Saturday, vigorously swung the bag, it still didn't click. Rewatched multiple times last weeks lesson and finally got the message, using the big leg muscles. Knew I was on to the right motion after the first successful session - legs muscles were telling me (sore from exercise). Also incorporated the step drill between shots in the garage driving range. Holy Smokes. first video of my down the line swing was on plane, body led swing - no over the top! Now my challenge is maintaining the leg muscle movement on the down swing, for some reason throwing the bag of shopping in the back swing is easily imprinted with my body, the downswing is getting there, but it wasn't naturally intuitive (probably because I am trying to erase 30 years of muscle memory of an early release, arms led down swing). Thanks Danny, your explanation of the body led concepts are great, guess I won't be selling the clubs and taking up birding!

That’s so good to hear, please never give up. One way to really feel the downswing is the practice swinging the shopping backwards while simultaneously stepping forwards with your lead foot. That way you are starting your downswing with your lower body well your Upper body is still moving away from the target. This is the key to shallow in the golf club and always coming from the inside

I think using a weight will really help develop my movement. As a slightly older player I am so stiff these days (esp. on the colder mornings) so my back swing is very shallow and I try, and mostly fail, to 'hit' the ball harder to get some distance. More body, more power. Thanks Danny, great tip.

Thanks for this lesson Danny, your coaching style really resonates with me. I have been bogged down in detail until switching to your channel. I have seen some immediate, positive, changes to my swing. I particularly love this lesson as I have also just started following Dr Kwon’s videos. I can really identify with the consistent messaging from your respective channels.

Can't wait to go to the range to try this tomorrow. I hit some great iron shots today when I was able to load weight on my left foot and swing through - but I was inconsistent. I think by working on the back swing part as per this video, I should get more consistent. I usually listen to Danny's videos several times before I take things to the range. It usually takes me 3 views or so to get the knowledge really ingrained, then I am ready to practice. Btw, I avoid swinging clubs in the house - too many potential accidents there!!
