In the second of my Dark Souls 3 Lore series we explore the Profaned Capital - a ruined city which houses both a Lord of Cinder and a dark secret.
The capital actually has a really interesting story, you just have to look a little closer than you do for some of the other areas. In this video I will explore what we know about Yhorm, how the flame was created and then how it was used by both the denizens of the Capital and the Ambitious Sulyvahn after the Capital's Fall.
I do not own the rights to Dark Souls 3, all rights to FromSoftware

Truly, Yhorm the Giant is a legend. Ancient stories tell of a father of giants, welcoming all in open arms, but as if in question. Yhorm is the descendant of an ancient conquerer, which is why the people distrust him. But who is this ancient conquerer? He is none other than Giantdad, father of giants and Legend. Yhorm has unbelievable STAMINA, HEALTH, AND ENDURANCE. Everything a warrior ever needs. Yhorm is also known to have had a shield, but eventually tosses it away in favor of the fighting style of his ancestors, zwei-handing his machete. Yhorm fully realized his status as the Heir of Giants, and becomes powerful enough to link the flame. Alas, as we know all too well, the strength of the Old Giant Royalty was never meant to link the fire, for it is too much. Yhorm burnt the entire profaned capital upon linking the fire. Yhorm was also known for having two Storm Ruler Great swords. Yhorm had created these swords as a fail-safe knowing that Royal Giants are unstoppable, and made the weapons as a weakness to the Royal Giants. This explains why the storm ruler doesn't work on the normal giants, only on the Royal Family of Giants, because normal giants have been bested by humans worthy of the strength of giants before. After Yhorm returns as a Lord of Cinder, he purposely leaves a storm ruler by his throne in case another unkindled comes instead of Siegward.

Another great video I have some thoughts here- The statues in the profaned capital really struck me, they appear to be holding telescopes looking up at the sky. Now you cant just throw telescope statues up overnight, so i think the flame from the sky had been there for some time. As some kind of interesting astrological event (also that they weren't underground at that point) Secondly Siegward talks about how the sun will shine on Yhorm. What stops the sun shining? Well we have an event at the end of DS3- the eclipse. -and right at the ends of the game a burning pillar of flame is actually spilling down to the earth. I'm wonderig if this is what the profaned flame might have been? the channeling of this eclipse fire? Did linking the fire end the eclipse and in the process send a blinding shock of flame out across the capital as the flames kicked up then went out? Secondly- those hand creatures. They look just like manus' hand with the teeth on the inside of the finger. -and they are reaching out as though they WANT like a certain daughter of Manus who wanted her throne....

Your Aldrich and Profaned Capitol Lore videos are great. Both packed with info and edited nicely. They actually helped a lot in my research for a speculative theory I am working on with the Crystal Sages and Undead Legion as the actual instigators of most of Lothric's downfall, based on the line that they would "destroy countries at even the first sign of the abyss..."

Perhaps the Profaned Capital was not always called that. Maybe because of its corruption by the flame, it gained recognition around other parts of the world as the Profaned Capital. I think the passing of time, even though it's convoluted, still plays a part in everything. Also I have my own theory. Dusk of Oolacile says that oolacile was "reduced to ashes long ago". With the Profaned Flame being a derivative of dark maybe this plays a part? It would explain the sorcery school, not to mention the architecture seems very reminiscent. Drangleic is also a possibility but just because Yhorm is a descendant of a conqueror, doesn't make him next in line ruler. Thoughts? I fuckin love this series.

I assumed that the mention of Yhorm's title being "insincere" referred to the fact that a Lord of Cinder isn't exactly a lofty title. That description would then imply that Yhorm was aware that linking the fire would kill him-- and, based on Siegward's testimony, he may even have been aware that he would come back as a crazed beast.

I think I understand why Yhorm was such a good choice for King. In Dark Souls, power and potential scale with actual physical size, or at least appear to do so to most people including the "Chosen Undead." As a Giant, Yhorm has a natural size that nobody else in the Profaned Capital could compare to, and any potential usurpers would have that much more to contend against as their growth perspective would become all the more noticeable given what they had to catch up to. Yhorm made the potential for threats to his rule that much more of a barrier to competition, and so for a long time there was no challenge against him. I suspect that the Linking of the Fire first fell to him when it was decided that the Linking of the Fire ought to be completed by the King. He obliged and the result of his departure meant that a power vacuum was opened up.

This makes me wonder more about what relationship the profaned capital shared with Catarina. Maybe just Yhorm and Seigward were chums, maybe the two lands were friends as well? It might add insight as to why two, seemingly very different individuals might have such a close, almost brotherly friendship.

I can only assume that the Profaned Flame is the Chaos Flame of Izalith. And that Irithyll, and Anor Londo lay within the ruins of Old Eleum Loyce. "He discovered the Profaned Capital and an unfading flame below a distant tundra of Irithyll." Much like the Ivory King, Yhorm built his city to harbor the old flame, and rested his throne upon the "very mouth of chaos," serving as the "first line of defense." After all, he was a one-man vanguard According to the Ivory King Greatsword, "It is said that the Ivory King was once the highest ranking knight in his home of Forossa, famed for its god of war," soon after, he took his crown. Meaning that both Irithyll and Eleum Loyce lie upon Forossa, a land known for its powerful sages and sorceries. "Forossans venerated the god of war, and sages who led warriors into battle were called Northwarders." One of whom is a particularly interesting character, Azal. Azal has many ties to Logan, which may be indicative as to why the Profaned Capital houses one of two schools who claim heirship to him. "Greatly intensifies spells, but also drastically reduces spell usage," reads the staff of Azal, being described as one unfit for the "inexperienced." Much like Logan's crystallization catalyst, Azal's staff requires huge amounts of intelligence to use, and benefits the wielder with much stronger sorceries at the cost of less casts. Soul Flash, the only sorcery to be found within Frozen Eleum Loyce, describes it as one of many ancient sorceries of the land, tying it further in with Seath and Logan. When Yhorm left, the Flame of Chaos went unsatisfied, and engulfed the city. For as we know through the dialogue of Alsanna, the Flame demands sacrifices of souls to be sated. "It was with his magnificent soul that he build Eleum Loyce… …and contained the spread of Chaos. But the Chaos would not be sated, and the King gave his own soul" It is my belief that the prisoners that were sent into the dungeons of Irithyll were to be sacrifices to satiate the flame, and when there were none left, Yhorm kindled it with his own power.

Thinking on how the Profaned Flame can consume others makes me think all the way back to Dark Souls 1 and the pyromancy Black Flame. It was a pyromancy discovered by a pyromancer in the Chasm of the Abyss. I'm not sure if it's the same as the one found in 3 because it's not pure dark, but this does confirm that the Abyss can infuse itself with flame, making it much more powerful, and this would kinda explain why this Profaned Flame only burnt the inhabitants as it is known that all Dark attacks are powered by the Dark Soul.

The profaned flame made me think it was just a different way to refer to the chaos flame or a portion of the chaos flame that seemed to linger. It was found under tundra (dark souls 2 had it trapped under tundra), other items suggest that the chaos flame has burnt out, and pyromancers continually discuss the the power of fire overcoming people. So a powerful flame is under the tundra, a sorcerer finds it and uses it, and then it seems to engulf an entire city as well as corrupting those that tried to use it.This city ironically was inhabited with sorcerors obsessed with power (claming heirship to one of the most powerful sorcerrors in history). They over use the flame, and things cornyx warns pyro pupils about comes true for the Profaned Capital. But the Chaos Flame is out of fuel or whatever, so instead of just becoming a larger fire it just sort of has one last hoorah before completely burning out with just small remnants remaining (in things like the mace and the large cup the women tend to).

Interesting to note; Izalith is literally right next to the profaned capital; you can see that from the giant hole in the wall next to the giant tri-crossbow; it overlooks the path that leads from the distant manor to the dungeon. When flames are involved i often consider Izalith, pretty sure there is a connection there somewhere. Basically, Izalith is situated directly below Anor Londo alongside the profaned capital. Something else interesting to note; a lot of the structures that aren't built into the rock are leaning away from the giant gaping hole in the rock with the sun shining through; almost as if the blast of flame came through there; and also possibly making the sun a culprit. It seems the statues of people looking up at the flame were directly placed in this line of sunlight as if implying that is the direction the flame came from. The only other thing i can think of that could have ruined the capital is the archdragon due to its sheer size; however i have no way of tieing it in, so it is very unlikely. One other thing i feel needs explaining is the cursed women who look just like the hands of manus... The flame appears to have only burnt humans, in which case it might be hummanity related; upon which i think of manus also. So the cursed women, who look like Manus hands, and a flame that burnt only humans..Something is up with that...

+aaronleev I'm starting to think whenever it references the chaos being gone it actually means lost to the demons and no longer in its original form. Abyssal Gru are in the smouldering lake and alsanna was a child of dark that corrupted things around her such as the two abyssal cats in the snowstorm tundra so the abyss may have affected chaos as well creating the profaned flame, now considered a new concept entirely effectively leading to the "loss" of chaos. Kind of like how the deep appears to be the abyss without the corruption of what we know as the abyss so essentially manus created the abyss in the deep. Making them now synonymous to a point.
@nicholasrogers1871
@nicholasrogers1871 8 жыл бұрын
+Kone Whatsthenamespolicy This just gave me another idea. Since one of the endings of the game involves the dark (hollows/Londor) taking the first flame for themselves, what if the profaned flame is the dark's first attempt at capturing a flame for their own use: the chaos flame? The first flame is pure, but it is cyclical. The chaos flame is powerful, but unstable and unsustainable. It would make sense that a profaned flame created by a blend of the chaos and the dark could be everlasting, but in exchange would be incredibly dangerous to humans. After learning that the flame could be made everlasting but realizing the undesirable effects of the profaned flame, Londor now sets its sights on obtaining the real deal, the first flame.

I think this is the flame of eleum loyce...the only oracle in souls series is Alsanna, the flame was founded by Sullivan under a distant tundra and the name Eleonora seems the fusion of the name Elena, Alsanna , and Nashandra....the flame in Eleum seems to corrupt people, tranforming them in a evil version, unlike the chaos flame that gave birth to monster named Demons of Chaos....also, the witch Karla, another child of manus, is near in the irythill's prison....

I think Yhorm is the descendant of Vendrick. Vendrick was an ancient conquerer. Vendrick has a face and so does Yhorm. We can clearly tell that he isn't related to the giants for DS2 because they don't have faces while Yhorm does. Also he most likely isn't a giant from DS1 because those giants were far larger than Yhorm. We could speculate that Yhorm grew in size similarly to how Vendrick grew in size by either harnessing the power of the giants or finding lord souls.

Am I the only person who thinks maybe this profaned capital could be shulva, sanctum city? Considering shulva's apparent proximity to drangleic, and thus eleum loyce(irithyll) and the location and architecture of the profaned capital being very similar to shulvas, also a great flame borne of the sky, that burned naught but flesh? That literally screams dragon fire to me, now i realize there are holes in this theory, shulva was a miracle based city with heavy reverence of sinh, the slumbering dragon, but the bearer of the curse killed sinh, and i imagine the poison eventually seeped through the stone of the cave, or was maybe being pumped out by the rotten for his statues? Following this shulva gets reinhabited and regoverned, as for the profaned flame itself, well, I'm only guessing but it could be sinh's soul? Or the soul of the sunken king? As souls are very flame-like in dks, and the soul of a dragon, or a lord who worshipped a dragon would likely be very large flames, that would take a long time to fade
@Nightheven123
@Nightheven123 8 жыл бұрын
+BassBorn well... it gives us a hint that it has something related to ds2 as there is a corpse of a gilligan near the bonfire. And even though Shulva is a pretty interesting idea... (i will probably will run through that location to check out architecture and stuff) i would still place my bet on Eleum Loyce. I still think that this area is more related to Profaned Capital. You have Alsanna, who was an ORACLE back in there, who guarded the entrance to the sealed Old Chaos (could be profaned flame in here). And Eleum Loyce was an icy location, just like Irithyll. The only issue i have with it - it's just under Anor Londo... and that would mean that Eleum Loyce = Anor Londo to some extend... And we didn't passed by anything even remotely close to look like Anor Londo...
@bpmfj5422
@bpmfj5422 8 жыл бұрын
+Nightheven123 Still, it could be a possibility. We hear many times that Lothric is "where the transitory lands of the lords of cinder converge". Meaning that not only is the flow of time convoluted, but also space. This explains why the Stray Demon is guarding an entrance to the city of Lorthic but it doesn't connect to the High Wall. Maybe because of this Irithyll is so close to Lordran and wasn't at the begining (when it was called Elyum Loyce). The only thing that doesn't connect is the Chaos Flame beneath Elyum Loyce and the Profaned Flame beneath the Capital. I mean, the Profaned Flame is dark, Andre says he sees the abyss in it. The Chaos Flame was intended to replace the First Flame, and the abyss has nothing to do with it. Maybe Wolnir was the conqueror of the capital (Carthus?) and in his conquest found the abyss wich corrupted the flame becoming profaned. The only conexion i can make of Carthus and the Profane capital being the same is because of their focus in pyromancies and the abyss affecting them (profaned coal and dark pyromancies). But is a strech, a big one. Something I also don't understand is if Yhorm linked the First flame in the Kiln or if he linked the Profaned Flame. Becuase it says that the Profaned Flame erupted when he became a lord of cinder, so it erupted because he linked the profaned flame or because he left the city and lef it unprotected. Both flames seem to be two different things, and if the profaned flame is different to the chaos flame....then we have three flames.

Hmm... now that i think of it... it might actually be true. As at the Kiln of the first flame we have that twisted place where everything... fused or something. It could be that all that faraway places slowly getting to the kiln making all that mess. Well... that is true that they are not the same if you would go with raw comparement. BUT. As it seems that DS3 takes time after DS1 and DS2, on top of that we have high influence of he abyss in DS3 (like that abyss-snake-dudes, red-eyed enemies etc.) i would assume that Chaos Flame was corrupted by the abyss and so became Profaned Flame. Well... i have 2 ideas on that matter. 1. Yhorm has nothing to do with it. It was fault of that maidens and co who was in charge of keeping the flame under conrol, but as they became more arrogant they disdain they duties and that was the cause of great eruption. 2. Yhorm acted in a similar way as an Ivory King, holding Profaned Flame under control, but when he became Lord of Cinder he went hollow (or sort of, not sure how you describe that state) and was unable to control flame anymore and that is why it erupted.

Profaned Flame. "Fire born of the sky." It may indeed be referring to Dragon fire. But I'm thinking of the flame more likely being the flame of Chaos. Gwyn incited the Age of Fire by waging war against the Dragons. And when the flames started to fade, the Chaos Witches created the imitation flame that engulfed the entirety of Izalith.

I love your videos, but many of your points about the Dark being considered "against the natural order" is a falsehood passed down by Gywn as he was afraid of the Age of Dark and Humanity. The actual natural order of the Dark Souls world seems have been supposed to be -> Age of Dragons -> Age of Fire -> Age of Dark, but due to Gywn fear that he would lose his power as the Dark rose, he manipulated humans into serving him and his Age of Fire instead of their Dark heritage via the Undead Curse. I understand where your line of thinking comes from since in our world there's a sense in many works that light/fire is good and that darkness is bad. However, Dark Souls blurs those lines quite significantly and the natural order actually beckons the Dark. Additionally, neither is really affiliated with life or death as both can be seen as both destructive and useful sources of power.

i have a question concerning dark souls gameplay. As an avid fan of the story and subpar player of the games, im concerned with the difficulty of dark souls 3. This game doesnt feel like it has that rage factor or the "i finally did it!" when you beat a boss. I gave up on dark souls 1 at ornstein and smough, and when i purchased dark souls 3 i was worried i would never finish it. I dont know what has changed, but it feels much easier.

+Jacob Samm That tends to happen when you actually know how to play something. With the first darksouls you're pretty much going in blind for the first 10+ hours before you start to get a feel for it becasue it throws you strait into the fire. The second darksouls holds your hand abit till you get midgame so you know how to play when the difficulty spikes. Darksouls 3 feels like it has a good difficulty progression as the bosses slightly get more difficult as you move along (until the dancer). I have a feeling that the first dlc for ds3 is going to be a "bend you over the barrel and show you the 50 states" kind of difficult. It's probably going to make us rethink our entire lives when we realize that we've spent five hours shouting F*ck you to a television that can't hear us, and the "you died" screen being the only thing we see when we close our eyes as a forever reminder of how pointless our existence truly is.

+Lane Shockley haha...the bending over part was quite good, well played my friend..well played. But if that is the case, I'll be superhappy! Gotta love the struggle :) But yeah...I think you're correct about the difficulty spikes in each of the souls game. When you get to DS3 (if at all) you''re already a seasoned vet :)

Dark Souls 1 is easy as pie. I'm having more trouble with Dark Souls 3 because From Software took a huge dump all over my playstyle and they also put in more bullshit sections swamped by enemies to live up the legacy of difficulty, even though Dark Souls has never really been that hard before. Much, much harder games exist.

+Kone Whatsthenamespolicy Poor Alsanna. It would appear her efforts and that of her Ivory King, were ultimately for naught, if the women who caused the PF were related to her. Maybe there were a lot more Children of Dark than the four in DS2, especially since there's a DS3 character who also claims to be that.

+aromardu I need to do a lot more digging into the profaned capital I think. I just have too many unanswered questions. Was the chaos fading in during the ivory kings rule? Did yorhm combat the chaos or the abyss, or both? Is the references to the chaos being no more or lost not actually mean it has died but rather the pontiff claimed it as the profaned flame making it "lost" to the demons specifically.

Perhaps you can connect the old iron king from the second dark souls to the profane flame.
@rueceless7580
@rueceless7580 8 жыл бұрын
+Lane Shockley There really isn't much of an connection between the capital and the Old Iron King-however there seems to be some pretty solid connections to Elleum Loyce. The Pontif discovered the profaned flame below a tundra-sound familiar? How about the Boreal valley being an icy land with Elleum Loyce like knight ghosts wandering the streets? Only real confusing part is why Anor Londo is there-either it's not in the same exact location as the old city or Anor Londo was brought there by the whole Lothric being a transitory land that draws lords of cinder together.

+Rue Celess Recall that both space and time seem to be convoluted when the flame begins to fade. It's not too much of a jump to say that that the proximity of all three to each other is being caused by the fading.

climb down the nearest ladder to the bonfire (behind you) and you will see a bridge with a gargoyle at the end. You will be shot by fire from the right as you cross, but half way down the bridge if you peek out the right side there is a series of collapsed walls that you can jump on, and they will allow you to get down safely. After this run past the hand maidens and you will see the fog gate leading to Yhorm's boss room.

+Fernando Valles An profaned flame being discovered under a frozen wasteland? Seems kinda an obvious reference to me. Other obvious references are the Alligator like monsters having a resemblance to the guardians of Eleum Loyce as well as the ghost knights walking the streets baring a resemblance to the same knights who helped the Cursed Undead fight the Burnt Ivory King. The Oracle line from that description seems like just another clue to key players into the connections. Hardly seems like a stretch to me.

+Rue Celess then please fill these hole for me - "Demons were born of the Chaos Flame, but *the flame has not survived*, and the demons are a dying race." - ""This is much too dark. I see the abyss in it..."" Andre suggest that this flame have connection with The Abyss more than Chaos , the infusing from this coal are Dark , Blood , Hollow associate with human. p.s. The ghost knights are the Outriders , The alligator are called Sulyvahn's Beast.

*"Demons were born of the Chaos Flame, but the flame has not survived, and the demons are a dying race."* Some demons still have control over their flames-implying that the chaos flame hasn't completely sputtered out and that the item description is wrong. *""This is much too dark. I see the abyss in it..."" Andre suggest that this flame have connection with The Abyss more than Chaos , the infusing from this coal are Dark , Blood , Hollow associate with human. * I'm not convinced that coal represents the flame it's self to be honest. But for the sake of argument that doesn't dismiss the connection as the head Oracle of Elleum Loyce was a daughter of manus who has some obvious connections to the abyss. *"p.s. The ghost knights are the Outriders , The alligator are called Sulyvahn's Beast."* Yes-and they have obvious design cues form the Elleum Loyce knights. Elongated slender bodies-tall heads. Never said it was them I said they are an obvious reference. Once again, Elleum Loyce was built in a cold tundra above an ancient chaos-The Boreal Valley is a city in a frozen thundra built above an ancient Profane Flame. It's not stretch to assume the reference was intentional on FROM's part-and by that it's not that silly to draw some connection. Yhorm and the Ivory King have some similar themes to their stories too, both battled on the front lines and ascended the throne to protect their respectively lands and both cast them selves into flames as a ultimate sacrifice-even if the flame itself differed.

Chaos Flame and Profaned Flame are the same thing. The item descriptions are telling only half truths. Context clues from all 3 games pretty much point to the Chaos flame being a undesirable combination of Dark and Fire. The Witch of Izalith was born from the Dark she tried to create a new Flame but was consumed by it. You are what you eat and the new Flame she created ate her and became part Dark and part Fire. The word "Chaos" pretty much implies there is something else in the fire other than fire, an opposing force... a chaos, what else is there but the Dark.
@konewhatsthenamespolicy6308
@konewhatsthenamespolicy6308 8 жыл бұрын
+aaronleev I think the dark more becomes entwined in Dark Souls 2. The witch has the soul of life which went out of control creating chaotic life. So in this case chaotic is more a description of its consuming and warping nature of life being tampered with, rather than the dark. But alsanna on the other hand is a direct source of corruption similar to how the squalled queen likely poisoned sin slowly when she took over the song for it to sleep.
