I agree that some conflict within the ranks would have made things more interesting, but GL probably thought it would distract from the main narrative that the Empire is all bad. If we start having feels for the soldiers on the Death Star, we would realize NO ONE wins in a war and wouldn't celebrate as much as he wanted. The Ewoks singing at the end would be even more messed up than the rumor that they are cannibals and ate the Storm Troopers. How can you celebrate the death of thousands of conscripts doing what the Emperor commands under penalty of death? No one wants to think Luke and his friends are murderers. That's why GL made the enemies in the prequels droids. Easier to not care about the enemy.

As an OT-only guy, it's always been clear to me that the high-ranking officers of the Empire regarded Darth Vader as a kind of *_esoteric thug_* who for some reason or another got in high favor of the Emperor -- without actually being part of the proper Imperial hierarchy. So they would look at Vader with a mix of bewilderment, suspicion, and partly even disdain... quickly switching into terror, if they weren't careful.

I have a different cut of the original trilogy in my head that I've been convinced would bump them up to PG-13, by making one small tweak to Vader, and a few alterations to the script. Just remove all of Vader's dialogue. Imagine if the first movie he didn't speak at all, and was just this silent, gasping(his iconic breathing sound) entity that only ever showed up to choke people out. Instead of him saying things like "FIND THOSE PLANS!" to describe his motivation, just make his generals start sweating and panicking the instant he arrives. "LORD VADER UHH.... WE UHH... WE'RE SEARCHING AS FADT AS WE CAN FOR THE REBEL PLANS, BUT YOU SEE ACH-..... GGNNNGHH........ ACCCCHHHH!"(choked to death) Vader silently walks away, and the next general is TERRIFIED to replace the last one, and simply shouts the new orders. The first movie(a new hope) has no dialogue from him at all. The first line we actually hear from Darth Vader would simply be when he tells Luke "I am your father, search it, you know it to be true"(yes I know I butchered one of the most iconic lines in film, but I also vividly recall everyone misquotes it too). Imagine the pants-shitting terror when you finally hear his voice, and it's James Early Jones badass deep as fuck voice, telling this to Luke. Then finally for the third movie, we've removed that layer of mystery from him, and we can insert some more dialogue for him and get more of a performance from James earlJones. My only real issue with doing this is that it does remove James Earl Jones iconicvoice acting, but..... idk, I just think Vader could be made so much more ominous and terrifying that I think it would pay off overall. .

I can see why both of these scenes were left out. The initial Jerjerrod scene only tells us that Vader values the Emperor's command above his own, and that's something we already knew. Though I have to admit, it was cool seeing the imperial guards actually do something, even if it was only implying that they would try to take on Vader, we're given no indication in the films who would win that fight so it would have been a pretty interesting addition. As for the other scenes, while I like them in theory and they seem very well done, all it would have resulted in is the invocation of a 'New Hope'. The countdown to targeting Yavin, the highest ranking officer on the bridge awaiting the final firing order, the other officers telling him of the situation and his reaction, and lets face it, the plot points involving the Battle of Endor, as much as I love it, were already heavily leaning on Yavin to begin with, so this kept it from being a carbonite (heh) copy.

Not sure if that really tracks though... as at the opening of the film while Jerjerrod is shown to be intimidated by Vader, he is clearly much more freaked out when told that the Emperor will be arriving in person. He doesn't show anything outwardly that suggests he thinks the Emperor would "have his back". "He is quite displeased with your apparent lack of progress" "Then we shall double our efforts!" "I hope so Commander, for your sake, the Emperor is not as forgiving as I am" If anything this lays out that Vader is the right hand man and that Jerjerrod would rather deal with Vader then the Emperor himself. Unless there is another scene or bit of exposition that lets the audience know that Jerjerrod has an angle, then the deleted scene showing Jerjerrod's flex on Vader doesn't make much sense.

I think the reason Lucas removed those scenes is that it throws into question the motives of the people inside the Empire itself. Up until this point, we are to believe the Rebels are a force of good, and the Empire is a force of evil. The deleted scenes would blur the lines a bit and, while it's more realistic and nuanced, create sympathy for officers in the Empire. Maybe Lucas preferred to keep it simple and have viewers easily side with the Rebels and cheer for victory.

It would be cool to see a Director's Cut of the original trilogy using these deleted scenes. I've always loved the deleted scene in the Empire Strikes Back where C-3PO rips a warning sign off of a door on the Hoth Rebel base, and a Snowtrooper opens the door moments later and is dragged inside by the trapped Wampa. Just this one deleted scene of Jerjerrod and Vader adds another layer to this already mythic saga and shows that not everyone in the Empire is the embodiment of evil like the Emperor.

This adds so much context to Vader’s submissiveness not to mention depth to the imperial lore and an interesting subplot. I always found it odd how Luke drags Vader out to the docking area at the end and none of the imperials are like “holy shit the #2 boss is half dead over here.” If there’s some degree of condescension in addition to the fear, that might better explain the whole attitude toward him.

Wait-does this make sense? I feel like the later scene was deleted because it is confusing, at best. They need the shield provided by the shield generator on the moon. The reason it’s bad if the Rebels take the generator station is that they can blow it up, thus depriving the Death Star II of its shield and leaving it vulnerable. So once the Rebels have control of the shield generator, the Emperor’s solution is to destroy the entire moon, therefore guaranteeing that the Death Star II is without a shield and eliminating any possibility of retaking the generator station and turning the shield back on‽ Even for a “plays both sides” puppet master, making it impossible to restore the shields for the station he’s currently in sounds like a Pyrrhic strategy.

With them kept in we can still see the Empire has to be stopped, but it's a matter of differing ideals, not blind hatred for the cartoonishly evil bad guys. Would have elevated the writing. The destruction of the Death Star take center stage as the final act. with one last cut showing Luke escaping. too much clutter ruins movies. One thing would be to make all the good deleted scenes "cannon" so while not shown in the movie they are things that happened in the Starwars trilogy universe- the Moff really was ordered to fire on the moon and really did question his orders- Luke's interaction with his friends at Toshe Station really did go down like that- his final meeting with Bigs before they joined the Rebels was like that

I do enjoy watching deleted scenes because of the additional story telling and details they often include. The Moff was certainly a much more in depth character than he was seen as in the movie.

I was thinking about cleaning up the Imperial hierarchy. I’ve been playing CK3 and honestly thinking about the empire through a pseudo-feudal lens and could lend a lot of depth to the Galactic Empire. Moffs being part of an aristocracy that derived influence from controlling swaths of the galaxy swearing fealty to the imperial throne versus officers of the imperial navy who derive their influence from their ability to command the imperial spacelanes and answer to the emperor himself. I was looking at this while thinking about a possible wargame RTS set in the disintegrating post-Endor empire so I thought the tension between the Imperial Navy and the regional moffs could be interesting.

I can only imaging the nervous crowds in the cinemas, chewing their fingernails and waiting with baited breath, wondering whether the rebels would survive. The scene was probably also too political to use as it reminds me of a real life close escape we also had with a certain unsung hero (Stanislav Petrov) Would you press the button what causes a nuclear war? Maybe this one is not totally the same...but it's frightening similar.

I'm actually glad they left out the part with Moff Jerjerrod stopping Vader. It would have taken away from the overall feeling the movie gave of Vader and Palpatine and also would have made Vader's turning on Palpatine less of a surprise.

Yes. I'm pretty comfortable with all the deleted scenes being deleted. There was reason for it in every case.

Vader definitely felt a lot more passive in rotj. There wasn't any scene of him killing or attacking anyone apart from Luke (in which he essentially held back). Really you could feel the conflict and tension within him. As cool as that scene was, I understand why they left it out

Very interesting! I wonder if Lucas cut the scenes because it would have been too reminiscent of the final countdown in ANH with the Death Star seconds from blowing up Yavin IV? It’s essentially exactly the plot device and ROTJ already suffers slightly from reusing elements from ANH (Tattooine again, Death Star again)

Yeah I like Vader has just a big scary, pants to be darken figure that no one wants to mess with. I can see why they removed the scenes with Moff Jerjerrod, having to giving another random new character scene time could have made the film drag on.

The other scenes with Jerjerrod should've stayed. Having the tension of this Death Star could still blow up a planet one last time adds something to the finale. Though I liked the space Battle of Endor we got just fine, once the shield generator is destroyed, blowing up the Second Death Star is just a foregone conclusion, there's very little drama in that part of the scene.

@@jeffbenton6183 I was thinking this too but then realize how much of this would be a copy of A New Hope. Leia is on the planet and the Death Star just got into range and is powering up to fire RIGHT when it gets destroyed. Having that exact sequence twice would be probably too much, which is probably why they cut it.

@@arthurmarshall6825 I think you're right. Thinking about it more, I'm starting to think the version we got works better. I do like the idea of Moff J protesting this order and being reluctant to carry it out is great and should be considered cannon (I have the impression that it always has been).
