118 people SLAUGHTERED by Wolves | Did wolves really kill an entire wedding party in Russia?

Dates and Dead Guys

Жыл бұрын

In March of 1911 the New York Times released a brief article describing the terrifying death of a 118 people in a wolf attack. To make matters ever worse the people were returning from a wedding in Russia when the massive pack of wolves attacked. In this episode I examine the report from the New York Times as well as some more recent wolf activity in Russia. Is it possible that the report is true or is something else going on?
The previous video was a recording of myself reading the article from the NYT.

I've heard from multiple sources about wolf attacks that occurred during WWI on the Eastern front. Supposedly, so many German and Russian soldiers were killed that an unofficial truce was organized so that both sides could face the greater threat of the wolves. Would love to hear yoyr take on this one. Thanks.

My first thoughts, “Maybe a wedding held at the special olympics; wolf packs aren’t that big” After a bit of google, the largest wolf pack was around 400 wolves. Fuck that
@cdubsoptional7849
@cdubsoptional7849 Жыл бұрын
What do you even do when 40 wolves pull up? I'm not a rancher, but to me, 40 wolves sounds like it's time to break out the mortars. You said "packs," as in plural. After the first time, I would have started laying a minefield. You have to expand on your comment. You and yours, and your ranch must be really out in the stix to encounter packs that big, and also really on point to be able to handle them. The way your comment is written, implies that these large wolf packs are no big deal. You could have said something like "On our ranch, packs of 40 have come through, and they're no joke, they decimate our livestock, make life difficult, etc." I'm guessing that you shoot them... with tranq darts and very humanely relocate them. So how do you do it? Snow mobiles, atvs, dog sleds, snow shoes? What time of the year do they come through? Do you make use of dogs? I'm even curious to hear about your utilities, sewage system, water, electric, gas, what kind of soil, what's the drainage like, how do you mark the boundaries of the property, how do you even get to your ranch? Is there a driveway off a paved road? Say I'm at the threshold, the main entrance. What do I see? You don't have to answer all or even any of that. But whatever you have to say, whatever you feel comfortable sharing, I am all ears.

The German/Russian Wolf truce was actually in the original script for this video. It was going to be a lot longer and include that as well as the Pilovo and Kirov Attacks. I couldn’t make them work together though. The Wolf Truce is a really tough one to research. There is a story from a handful of papers about it but kind of the like th 1911 wedding attack there are no names or quotes, which is not a great sign. What Is true for sure is that Russians and Germans killed a ton of wolves in the war, regardless of if a truce ever took place. And I did find one journal entry from a nurse on the front named Natalia Linka it goes as follows: January 14, 1918. “wolves have [changed] a lot, and they don’t have enough food. Sick and wounded soldiers die on the road, there is nobody to bury them, and they become prey to the beasts.” I will go back to those stories in a separate video down the road but right now I’m in the middle of writing an episode on how close the Yamasee War was to destroying the Carolina Colony in 1715. Thanks for the support.

This was more or less always the plan. In the last one I just read the article verbatim from the NYT. I got a new mic I wanted to test out and was having trouble with the script for this video. I wanted to talk about the WWI Russian/German wolf truce, the 1927 Pilovo Attacks, and the 1940s Kirov Attacks also but it was a big mishmash and didn’t fit together. I’ll get to them eventually but next up is when the South Carolina Colony was nearly destroyed in the Yemassee War.

During WW1 there were stories of soldiers getting slaughtered by huge Siberian wolves on the battlefield
@datesanddeadguys
@datesanddeadguys 11 ай бұрын
There is even a news article, I believe from the NYTs, that talks about how the wolf probably got so rough that the Germans and Russians paused the fighting so they could deal with the wolf problem. I found two journals from people at the time that elude to wolves but nothing as dramatic as the claims made by the NYT. It does seem that wolves were acting as scavengers of the dead in at least a minor degree. The horrifying thought is that the injured could easily have been seen by scavengers in a similar light as the dead.

A good number that he said isn't common. Then seen him and chased him. He was chased 1 more time before grabbing his rifle and had to kill 2 or 3 of them. Because he didn't want them to look at him as food.

Wolves actually do kill for sport and fun if the opportunity is there. If caribou or moose are slowed or floundering in snow they will kill and then go after the next one that is still moving until none are moving. Much like a pack of domestic dogs going after sheep.

Common tactic of wolves, foxes, wild dogs and other wild canines. Food tends to be scarce, so if there's a sudden abundance they may slaughter the lot - think a fox in the hen house - and even cache some of the meat under ground to eat later.

I was later told it was from a breed meant to protect against wolves. I had no ax, gun, knife, or backup... and it was NOT a training exercise. I only had my hands, feet, my will to live & God's grace. FOR YEARS I woke up in a cold sweat. The Russian wolf tale was probably just that, but a canine that truly wants to kill you? SERIOUS STUFF!
