A Lakota Love Story: How to Win the Girl on the Great Plains

This video was inspired by Chapted 6 of Black Elk Speaks in which the author of the book relates a story from Black Elk, a Lakota medicine man, about a young man named High Horse. High Horse is in love and the chapter tells the story of what a Lakota man may have to go through in order to win the woman of his dreams. Its a fun story.
There is some controversy in regard to the book, Black Elk Speaks. It was written in 1931 and the author, John G. Neihardt based the book off of his interviews with Black Elk, a Lakota medicine man. But some of the book raises questions because some of the topics addressed by Neihardt don’t align perfectly with Lakota culture. It’s possible that in the translation of the interviews he made mistakes or that he changed some items to better appeal to his audience. It’s unclear. But this story is an interesting one and a fun window into the life of the Lakota.

I want a sitcom based on the wacky adventures or high horse and red deer. That was one of the best stories I've ever heard! I love how people always think of Indians as being these noble warriors, and then we just have this guy bumbling along. Are we sure his name wasn't high horse, because he was actually high all the time?

Bumbling is an excellent way to put it. It’s grounding and humanizing. Culturally everyone can relate to it. It would be a very enjoyable sitcom.

Excellent story telling. I had the pleasure of being invited to a Vision Quest under the auspices of Wallace Black Elk the grandson of Black Elk. As a Pottawatomie it was an Honor. I still cherish that time.

That sounds like an incredible experience. In the book Black Elk Speaks, he references his vision as a child often. That part of his culture was very important to him and who he was.

For the novel _The Centennial_, James Mitchner borrowed the part of this story where a brave sneaks into the territory of an enemy tribe to steal a huge amount of their horses in order for the father of the woman he loves to allow him to marry her. James Mitchner rewrote it to make it his own.

In the miniseries, the brave already had the girl as his girlfriend, but she was so pretty that her father wanted something like four horses for her. He was expecting someone who already had the horses or someone to buy them for him or to capture wild horses. The brave gets angry at her father and screams at him and tells him that he will give him some huge number of horses--like twenty. His girlfriend gets furious and yells at him, telling him that he has too much pride, thinking that she'll never get to be his wife. So he sneaks into an enemy tribe's village and removes about twenty horses from a corral and rides away with them while braves chase him. When the braves see that he is too far away for them to catch him, they cheer at him for his bravery. Then he rides into his village with the horses and everybody looking confused.

Not so sure about that. The intent was always to win the woman, not to please her. Remember that the horses are meant for her father, although she seems to enjoy the idea of being expensive. To my understanding, simping is to waste time, effort and money pleasing a (mediocre) girl who will never be yours. TL;DR: It's not simping if it works.
