Hi Jennifer, Hope one day you could explain the sentence structure for "I grew up doing something." I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks!
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I think it's easiest to see "doing something" as an adverbial. It acts like an adverb because it answers the question, "How did you grow up?" ***I grew up listening to all kinds of music.*** I've heard different grammar terms used, like adverb phrase or participial phrase. I see the sentence as SVA (subject + verb + adverbial). I hope that helps.

Thank you for the new video, Jennifer. According to the quiz, I'm a creature of habits for sure. I got points in almost every options except the favorite beverage. But I have another favorite thing, cigarette, though I'm trying to quit smoking recently. I have very clear daily goals besides learning English, like exercise and something for business. For English learning, it's been an important part of my daily routine. I spend at least 1 or 2 hours on it daily, which depends on how much spare time I have each day. I hope I can keep making progress in English day by day. It's a very important step for me to achieve my final goal. For eating and dressing, actually I don't care a lot about them, so I don't have obvious habits on them. Feeling a bit sad of being a creature of habits, it probably indicates I'm not young any more. Changes create opportunities, at least at this point, I don't want I have too many unchangeable habits.😀😀
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
It's true we can hold onto our habits more tightly as we age, but not all routine is bad. We know what makes life more comfortable and enjoyable for us based on experience. But please do consider giving up smoking. I hope we'll be exchanging comments when we're in our eighties and nineties. :) Be healthy and live long!

Corrections: creature of habit (no -s) in almost every option (no -s)/ OR in every category another favorite thing, cigarettes (need the plural) English learning OR English studies have been an important part of my daily routine. As for eating and dressing,... I don't have obvious habits in this area of my life Feeling a bit sad to be a creature of habit not young anymore

• I set my phone alarm every day before I go to bed and whenever I hear the buzz of my phone alarm, I just grab my phone and set it off, and then I get up, wash up and put on my clothes. • As to how much I study English, I have an everyday habit of watching English videos on KZfaq and reading the news posts in English on Facebook. • As for my favorite beverage, believe it or not, but I am a tea aficionad so I think you and I are much alike. • I also have a daily habit of checking my email and social media accounts throughout the day. • My goal, besides learning English, is achieving success in my career as a lawyer and I'm pretty sure I'm making progress toward this goal day by day. • One bad habit I don't like about me is that I don't like to eat the same things day after day. I just get bored easily, I think. • As for my work, I have the same work routine day in, day out. ➡ That makes me a creature of habit with 7 points. 😀
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
I think having a certain number of habits is completely normal. We like routine because it organizes life and makes things predictable. With predictability, we gain control and can anticipate what will be required of us. But too much routine eventually bores us, and even a creature of habit knows that change forces us to grow. :) Lovely uses of the expressions, including "alike"! Quick notes: 1. You hear the alarm and then turn it off. 2. Spelling: aficiando www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/aficionado 3. You don't need "but" after "believe it or not." BTW - I don't think it's bad to have a lot of variety in your diet as long as your stomach can handle everything. Aging has made me more cautious about certain foods, but I really do enjoy trying new things.

I get up every morning at 9-10AM, then I quickly jump to my phone for checking my emails, texts, and some other updates. To be honest, No, I do not study English every day. However, I do study English every few days. Sometimes, daily at least 15-30 minutes. All it depends on my mood. I am sad that I didn't get any points. Yes, I do check my emails and social media accounts quite often. At least, once in every 2 hours. I am happy that I got full points in this category. My goal is to become a web developer and designer. Although, it is not my primary goal or you can say hobby. I have been learning coding & related stuff (HTML, CSS, PHP, javascript) almost past 6 months. I learn these things daily at least 1 hour throughout a day. My goal progress is going better day by day. I get bored of eating the same thing day after day. I am a person who likes to eat different foods at least few other days.

It sounds like you have a healthy balance between habits/routines and variety Saddam. The point system was just for fun! I'm no expert in human behavior. Don't worry about how many or how few points you got. ;) Some suggestions/corrections: I get up every morning at 9-10AM, and then I quickly jump to my phone to check my emails, texts, and some other updates. To be honest, no, I do not study English every day. However, I do study English every few days. Sometimes, it's for at least 15-30 minutes. It all depends on my mood. My goal is to become a web developer and designer, although it is not my primary goal or hobby. I have been learning coding and related stuff (HTML, CSS, PHP, javascript) for almost six months. I study these things daily, for a total of about an hour a day. My goal progress is better day by day. I get bored of eating the same thing day after day. I am a person who likes to eat different foods at least every few days.

Thanks: ) How long does it takes to be fluent in English language ?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the person and other factors like resources and time spend on one's studies. With regular study, you can achieve basic proficiency in a year or so, but a high level of fluency comes with much more time and a greater investment. I have very advanced private students who have been studying for 5-10 years, but they want to achieve native-like proficiency since they must perform at a high level in their chosen professions.

Please continue to listen. It helps make words and phrases familiar. You also need to read regularly. (Follow my links to Kiki. I write regularly so that you can read regularly and learn vocabulary.) When you speak, don't rush. After a conversation, replay it in your mind. Take the time to say things as you should have said them if there were mistakes or awkward sentences. When you learn vocabulary, learn common phrases with a new word. How do people use the word? A good learner's dictionary will teach you those set phrases. www.ldoceonline.com/

Ha ha. Yes, I open my eyes to look quickly at the phone. These days, you can always enable dictation with a smartphone, but usually I text with my fingers. I type.

You might work with audio books so that you can listen and read along as well as listen and repeat. Search for a genre that interests you. You might like my Oral Reading Fluency series. You'll find it hear. englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/

I suggest saying "gonna" but writing "going to." Perhaps you mean: My mom is going to take the hard way day after day. She never does anything the easy way.

If you don't mind, maybe we can talk with each other. I am a student from China, I have learned english for many years, but my oral english is still poor. And I also need a friend to speak with each other.

Other day means
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
"Every other day" means skipping one day in between. If you exercise every other day, I understand that it's a pattern like Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

If you say "the other day," then it means one day in the recent past, but you're not specifying which day it was. Maybe you don't remember either.
